INTRODUCTION

Historical Effective Team

The ancient Roman army was devastatingly effective against Barbarian

warriors. One on one, Roman legionnaires were strong and well trained, but
not necessarily stronger than their enemies. Their world dominating success
came from their performance as a team, where each individual would willingly
give his life to save his cohorts. They would march in step, shoulder – to –
shoulder in a phalanx into hordes of running, screaming, mace brandishing
soldiers, each knowing he may die in a painful death, but taking that risk for
the greater good.

This exemplifies the crucial difference between a group of talented people

and an effective team. Members are individually talented in an effective team.
More importantly, each is willing to place the team’s success ahead of his/her
own. Build your team with the above advice in mind, and they will perform like
a finely tuned machine.

Learning Objective:

At the end of the module, you should able to:

1.) lead small teams

2.) be an effective leader

Lesson 1. Leading a Small Team Effectively

Leading small team ca be daunting in a big way. Every action counts and
there is no room slacking or flying under the radar. But there are advantages –
small teams provide more of an opportunity for immediate impact and a better
understanding of all of the issues impacting the team, things that are not
usually possible with a large team. Being trenched in the daily workings of a
small team also allows you to lead by example.

When you act with compassion and self-awareness, your employees will
emulate you. To keep your employees focused and inspired, here are some tips
to effectively lead them towards the same goals:

1. Have a clear value and purpose that binds your team together.
These values and purposes will guide you as your business grows.
Though values will differ per person, there should be one purposes that unites
and essentiality answers the question: What am I doing this? To help promote
this purpose, foster a culture that inspires your team to want to come to work.
Communicate the employee benefits of the business potentially growing, and
encourage the employees’ personal growth along with the company’s. The
positive empowerment will yield better employees, leading to a stronger team.

2. Hire the right people

The mantra “quality and quantity” should be top of mind when it comes
to operating a small business, and your team is no exception. In small teams,
ensuring all team members are driven by the same aforementioned values and
purpose will be critical to work together effectively. To get the best people, look
at the demeanor and integrity over experience (for the most part). An overall fit
culturally is the difference between a hire and a great hire. Skills can be
taught, but personality and attitude are hard to change.

3. Be selective about your customers.

Try to seek new business in places that are most likely to yield a good fit
with your core values and your team’s competencies, and the give them the
best treatment. Customers who are bad fit will drain your team’s time and
enthusiasm, and are unlikely to be good ambassadors.

4. Create an inspiring work environment.

This allows your team to feel nurtured. Having a small team generally
means that everyone needs to be flexible and wear a lot hats, so instilling a
sense of creativity in the space will empower your team to be as agile as they
need to be. There are always better ways to do things; ley your employees get
creative when it comes to everyday challenges. Enable your team to think and
share ideas about projects outside of their workspace, as well. This will inspire
and refresh them – circling back to a sense of purposes at work.

5.Foster culture and collaboration.

That intangible sense of belonging will make everything seem worthwhile
to employees, regardless of what they’re working on. Start with open lines of
feedback – yourself included. Take feedback so you can give feedback. Those
around you will respect and follow your openness to constructive criticism.
When this happens, your team will feel empowered and valued, and in turn be
their best self.

6. Encourage work life balance.

Members of small teams are more susceptible to burnout because their
roles require them to always be ‘on’. Empower your team to have lives outside
of work and to reenergize as needed so they’ll be on top of their game when
needed most. When leading small team, it is important to attach efficiency with
collaboration. To do this, first gain agreement on the task or goal at hand. As a
leader, it is important to have a unified understanding from your team
members. This will enable you to clearly establish direction to each member,
and how they can move towards the end goal. Bear in mind that your team
members are individuals – it’s ideal if everyone gets along perfectly, but this
isn’t realistic. It is more important that team members respect the differences
in their teammates, while keeping in mind that they are working toward a
common goal. This includes the team leader, who should be true to themselves

and not try to implement a specific management plan or method. Strive to

always keep your team inspired; ensure there is a united purpose for them to
stand behind and always encourage teamwork. You’ll yield the most success
with a group that is focused and compassionate, and willing to put their team
first.

10 Step to Lead Small Team

◘ Here’s a 10-step method how you can build your own effective small
team and deliver miracles in the process.

◘ Three (3) ways to start strong

1. Have a clear purpose and core values.

If you want to get somewhere, you have to know where you are going and
what roads you are willing to take. That will serve as your guide in hiring, and
your team’s true north once you are up and running.

2. Hire the right people.

This is critical. You want the best, most talented people, but only those
who are willing to play together for the team’s success.

3. Be more selective about customers.

Only work with customers who are a good fit with your core values and
your team’s competencies. Customers who are bad fit will drain your team’s
time gets sent in when the environment is uncertain and risky, the task
complicated and challenging, and the opposing force is overwhelming?

Example:
It’s highly trained small teams such as SEAL’s and Delta Force. There’s
nothing like the agility, focus, inventiveness, and esprit de corps of an effective
small team of committed and talented individuals willing to put the team’s
success ahead of everything else to deliver the seemingly impossible.

The same in business. If the task is routine but requires many resources,
big companies often win out. However, larger groups frequently have a hard
time maintaining teamwork and unity of purpose.

For breakthrough results, small is where it’s at. With a small team.
Tasks stay focused, everyone knows everyone, and nobody can slack or hide.
Michael Jordan once said “talent win games, but teamwork and intelligence
win championships.”
◘ (3) Three ways to stay effective in the present

4. Create an inspiring working environment.

We recently moved into a new central location where our talented,
digitally minded people feel nurtured, allowing their creativity to flow.

5. Foster a strong company culture.

Giving your team small perks, such as fully stocked pantry and a space
where they can relax while brainstorming, is great.

However, there’s something far more important. That’s the intangible

team spirit that makes your team feel part of something worthwhile. This is
what gets each of your people to do everything to help their colleagues succeed.

6. Help your team keep a clear mind and focus.

To maximize productivity, take care of your team’s day-to-day concerns.
In the words of productivity expert Robin Sharma: “Assets are not time plus
money, but energy plus focus.”

Two (2) ways to promote future effectiveness

7. Invest in Learning.
Help your people develop and grow as individuals, such as sending them
to training and industry conferences. They will become more valuable to you,
the team, and your customers.

We allow our people to buy – at our expenses – any books they want to
read and then have a monthly book club where we discuss what we learned.

8. Support innovation.
Your small size gives you an advantage over larger competitors – you can
afford to “do things that don’t scale.”

Give your team venues and time to share ideas and think about their
projects outside of their workspace. The results will amaze you.

Two (2) ways to keep your team fresh and happy

9. Treat your people right.

If you support their work-life balance, then they will support your vision
and goals with everything they have. According to a research “Work-life balance
is by far the most universal concern for 50% of the workforce”.

Encourage your team members to have lives outside of work. If you

always run them at 110%, you will burn them out just when you need to be on
top of their game.

10. Have fun.

Celebrate successes and arrange fun activities as a team. If you fail to
take the time and acknowledge a job well done, after a while your team will see
no point in giving you their all.
