OHS hazards are identified and maintain using suitable personal

protective equipment

Learning Objectives:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:
1. Describe an ethical procedures on using suitable personal protective
equipment.

INTRODUCTION:
This Information sheet will cover the prepare land for agricultural crop
production through OHS hazards are identified and maintain using suitable
personal protective equipment. The Occupational Health and Safety Regulation
2001 defines a hazard as ‘anything (including work practices or procedures)
that has the potential to harm the health or safety of a person’.
Hazards can be grouped into five broad areas:
 Physical e.g. noise, radiation, light, vibration
 Chemical e.g. poisons, dusts
 Biological e.g. viruses, plants, parasites
 Mechanical/electrical e.g. slips, trips and falls, tools, electrical
equipment
 Psychological e.g. Fatigue, violence, bullying.
Hazards can arise from:
 the work environment
 the use of machinery and substances
 poor work design
 inappropriate systems and procedures
Examples of workplace hazards include:
 manual handling e.g. pushing, pulling, carrying, lifting
 work environment e.g. floor surfaces, noise, temperature
 machinery
 heat e.g. burns and scalds
 electricity e.g. electrocution
 harassment e.g. bullying and/or violence
 hazardous substances e.g. chemicals, fumes
 biological waste

 skin penetrating injuries e.g. knife or syringe injuries

 noise
 confined space
Recognizing the hazards in a workplace and taking steps to eliminate or control
the hazard ensures the safety and well-being of all employees. It is easier and
more effective to eliminate or control the hazard before serious injuries result.
Hazards can be dealt wit
How severe will the injury or illness be?
The answers to these questions will help in assessing, controlling or
eliminating the hazard. The level of risk will determine the priority assigned to
its elimination or control.
Risk is the probability that harm might come to a person. It is a measure of
how likely an injury or illness is when a hazard exists.
Personal Protective Equipment
 Respirator
An apparatus worn over the mouth and nose or the entire face to prevent the
inhalation of dust, smoke, or other noxious substances.
 Safety glasses or goggles
Safety glasses are a part of Personal Protective Equipment that are worn by the
workers around their eyes for protection. Safety glasses act as a shield to
protect the eyes from any type of foreign debris that may cause irritation or
injury.
 Chemical resistant coveralls
 3M™ 4510 Disposable Coveralls are made of microporous laminated
material to help provide basic barrier protection against light liquid
splashes and hazardous dusts.
 3M™ 4520 Disposable Coveralls are made of lightweight, breathable
SMMMS polypropylene.
 3M™ 4530 Disposable Coveralls are made of lightweight, breathable
polypropylene with flame resistance. Designed to be worn over primary
FR garments, they can help provide protection against dusts and light
liquid splashes.
 3M™ 4540+ Disposable Coveralls feature laminated material
construction with a breathable back panel for improved air circulation.
 Chemical resistant rubber gloves

Offering a high degree of sensitivity, these gloves are resistant to many acids,
alkalis, and other chemicals, providing long-lasting protection against
biological contaminants. The elastic material forms to the hand for superior
comfort. Gloves with a flock lining provide extra comfort, absorb perspiration,
and allow easy donning. Textured gloves offer enhanced grip and dexterity.
 Chemical resistant rubber boots
 Durable leather or synthetic uppers that are chemical resistant and/or
water and abrasion resistant.
 Seam sealed durable construction such as Goodyear Welt.
 A chemical resistant outsole that is also oil and slip resistant and can be
waterproof.
 A comfortable inner sole and a durable and supportive foot-bed.
 Other Safety features such as a steel or composite toe and electrical
hazard safety rated.

SEQUENCE FOR PUTTING ON

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE)

The type of PPE used will vary based on the level of precautions required,
such as standard and contact, droplet or airborne infection isolation
precautions. The procedure for putting on and removing PPE should be
tailored to the specific type of PPE.
1. GOWN
• Fully cover torso from neck to knees, arms to end of wrists, and wrap around
the back
•Fasten in back of neck and waist
2. MASK OR RESPIRATOR
•Secure ties or elastic bands at middle of head and neck
•Fit flexible band to nose-bridge
•Fit snug to face and below chin
•Fit-check respirator
3. GOGGLES OR FACE SHIELD
