What is
VERMICOMPOSTING?

 From the Latin word “VERMI” which means


worm.
 It is simply composting with worms.
 The end product called castings is full of
beneficial microbes and nutrients which makes
a great fertilizer.
Biology of  There are 4,000 + species of earthworm
Earthworms in the world and 400 in the Philippines.

 Life span =1 to 2 years.

 The African night-crawler can grow


to more than 30 cm in length and 3
grams each.
Characteristics:  Soil dwelling
 With tubular and soft body
 Cold blooded and have no
special body covering like hairs
or scales
 Hermaphroditic
Characteristics:  Breathe through their skin
 Active at night
 Many are migratory
 Feed on moist OM decomposed
by bacteria and other
microorganisms in the soil
