SET OF ASSIGNMENT 2 FOR CV-7113 ADVANCED CONCRETE

TECHNOLOGY

Q1.) What is meant by durability of concrete, what are the consequences of improper
quality and inadequate durability of concrete?
Answer :
Durability of concrete is defined as the property of concrete to withstand factors . which
reduces the life of concrete by their disintegration effects.

The consequences of improper quality and inadequate durability of concrete

are indicate as.
1- Loss of strength of concrete
2- Concrete liable to be easily effected by deterrent
3- Corrosion of rebar’s
4- Loss of serviceability
5- Unpleasant appearance
6- Danger to persons and property
7- Expensive repair costs
8- poor perception of concrete as a material
9- Poor perception of agencies intricate
10- Reduce of service life
11- External agencies like weathering, attack by natural or Industrial liquids, Gases,
bacterial Growth etc.
12- Alkali- aggregate reaction
13- Ingression of moisture/air smoothing corrosion of steel and fast concrete cove
Q2.) Mention the factors which influence the durability of concrete. What is the impact
of W/C ratio on durability of concrete?
Answer :

Factors which influence the durability of concrete.

1- Weathering including disruption due to reaction of freezing and thawing.
2- Mechanical wear.
3- Chemical corrosion.
4- Reactive aggregates.

. What is the impact of W/C ratio on durability of concrete?

Permeability is the contributory factor for volume change and higher W/C ratio is the
fundamental cause of higher permeability.
Use of higher W/C ratio – permeability – volume change – cracks – breakdown –
failure of concrete is a cyclic process in concrete.
For the durable concrete, use of lowest possible w/c ratio is the fundamental
requirement to produce dense and impermeable concrete.
Modern superplasticizers of polymer base are so efficient that t is now possible to
make flowing concrete with a W/C as low as 0.31 or even as low as 0.29 with
increased slump more than 250mm.
