Background of the Study

A teacher does not only mean giving the grammatical rules, practicing and evaluating

the students. A teacher is a person who has a job in the field of education. A teacher is a

person who helps his students acquire knowledge, competencies or values. If there is no

motivation, there will be no proper teaching and learning. The teacher shouldn’t be the

authority in the classroom. The teacher should know how to manage the class and teach the

students on how to manage themselves. It means that the teacher is exposing the students to

behave properly. (Wikipedia, Orobia, 1997)

Teaching is an important and well regarded profession within our community. People

from all walks of life find it a professionally and personally rewarding career choice. It is a

unique profession because everyone has been in a school setting and seen teachers in action,

even if just as a school student.

Teaching is a highly complex activity. This is in part because teaching is a social practice

that takes place in a specific context and therefore reflects the values of that specific context.

Teaching is a career that provides challenges, excitement, personal reward and a

chance to encourage and support others to achieve their goals.

There are many personal qualities and skills that makes someone good teacher

(Queensland Government, 2014)

These include:

 being good at explaining things to others

 being a people person and enjoy working with a wide range of people

 enthusiasm

 having a strong knowledge in particular subject areas

 being a good time manager

 ability to work in a team as well as using own initiative

 keeping cool under pressure

 having patience and a good sense of humor

 being fair-minded

 coping well with change

 enjoying a challenge

Good teachers know that by listening to and working with colleagues, parents, other

professionals and community members that they can inspire students and improve their

learning. However, the appreciation and discipline of a certain person depends on the one who

appreciates. Today’s students have their own view of what is a good teacher. Hence, this study

was to draw idea for high school students of what is a good teacher.

Objectives of the Study

General Objectives:

This study is intended to determine the characteristics of a good teacher as

perceived by 3rd Year Students of West Visayas State University when taken as an entire group.

Specific Objectives:

Specifically, this study aimed to determine the:

1. Top 5 characteristics of a good teacher as perceived by 3 rd students of West Visayas

State University when grouped according to gender.

2. Top 5 characteristics of a good teacher as perceived by 3 rd students of West Visayas

State University when grouped according to religion.

3. Top 5 characteristics of a good teacher as perceived by 3 rd students of West Visayas

State University when grouped according to low and high income.

Significance of the Study

The results of the study may be beneficial to the following:

Students. The West Visayas State University students would benefit the results of

the study for them to further understand the characteristics of their teacher.

Teachers. They will know the characteristics of being a good teacher and they

can apply it in their teachings.

Department of Education. The agency would convince to take part in training

teachers on how t be a good teacher.

Future Researchers. This study motivates other researchers to conduct a

research along this line or to deliver upon a research considering the same objectives of

the study. Information derived from this study serves as a basis for the future related

researcher.

Definition of Terms

For the purpose of clarity and understanding, the following terms were defined

conceptually and operationally.

Characteristics is defined as pertaining to, indicating or constituting a distinctive

character, quality, or disposition; typical (The Grolier International Dictionary, 1990).

In this study, “characteristics” refers to the teachers special quality or traits towards

his/her students in WVSU, this include patience, respect, responsibility, honesty, etc.

Teacher is defined as one who teaches; especially a person hired by a school to teach

(The Grolier International Dictionary, 1990).

In this study, “Teacher” refers to person who is teaching at West Visayas State

University.

Perceived is defined as to become aware of directly through any of the senses;

especially, to see and hear; to become aware of one’s mind; achieve understanding of;

apprehend (The Grolier International Dictionary, 1990).

In this study, “Perceived” refers to the observation or understanding of the WVSU

Students towards the characteristics of a good teacher.

Students are defined as one who attends a school, college, or university. One who

makes a study of something (The Grolier International Dictionary, 1990).

In this study, “Students” refers to the subjects of the study who are enrolled in the 3 rd

year class of West Visayas State University.

Delimitation of the Study

The study is intended to determine the characteristics of a good teacher as perceived by

3rd year students of West Visayas State University. It likewise aimed to determine how gender,

religion and family-income influence the characteristics of a good teacher.

The respondents of the study were the WVSU 3 rd year class students. They will be

selected through stratified random sampling.

The data will be gathered through a researche-made questionnaire validated by a panel

of juror’s expert in grammar, statistics, values education, research.

All statistical computation will be computer processed through the use of statistical

package for the Predictive Analytic Software (PASW).

Chapter I

Introduction of the Study

Chapter One is divided into five parts: (1) Background of the Study, (2) Objectives of

the Study, (3) Significance of the Study, (4) Definition of Terms and (5) Delimitation of the

Study.

Part one, Background of the Study, includes the basic information about the study and

its theoretical and conceptual framework.

Part two, Objectives of the Study, provides the specific goals the researcher seeks to

achieve.

Part three, Significance of the Study, provides the importance of the study to the

different sectors in the society.

Part four, Definition of Terms, enumerates and defines the relevant words for the

purposes of understanding and better comprehension.

Part five, Delimitation of the Study, identify what are included in the study, research

method/design, and statistical tools used.
