1. Based on the list of words you identified, are the differences rooted only in spelling,
pronunciation, or on meaning of words?
They have different spellings, pronunciation, and the meaning of words sometimes will
also differ depending on how it is used in a sentence.
2. What do you think are the reasons for the difficulty of understanding the spoken language?
We find it difficult because it is not our first language, we need to learn it professionally
and with the help of teachers, that’s the main reason of our difficulty in understanding the
spoken language
3. Where do you attribute the struggles of learners in using the language both oral and written?
For me, I think learners like me lack of mastery in using the language both oral and written
and one of the factors affecting to the mastery is how we learn it and how frequent we
apply those what we learned. For example, the English language, it isn’t in our nature as
Filipinos using English language in simple communication because we have our own
language that we use which everybody can easily understand it. That is why we struggles
using the language both oral and written.
4. Based on your experience, what helped you improve in the use of the English language?
watching English movies, reading English books, always try to speak using the English
language when you communicate with friends and family who will understand you, for you
to be able to practice.

See if you can do this!

1. What did you observe in the variety of English between American and Filipino English in terms
of pronunciation?

Filipino English and American English are compared due to their similarities in pronunciation
and spelling. As we look back, the Philippines has been colonized by the American for 48
years and the influence it created to the Filipinos and has played a significant role in the
country’s educational system. Due to this influence, the Filipino English accent is almost the
same as the American English accent except for the fact that it’s a little strong compared to
the latter. It is interesting to note that now English is considered as the 2nd language of the
Philippines.
On the other side, the pronunciation of terms can be a big deal to Filipinos, if you have a
strong pronunciation of certain English terms, they will laugh at you. As what I have observed,
another factor affecting your pronunciation is what ethnicity you came from, for example, lot
of Filipinos laugh when Bisaya people try to communicate using English language because
of their strong accent which affects the pronunciation of words and sometimes lead to
misunderstanding.
