PRODUCT NAME: BASMATI RICE

Basmati Rice is one of the best-known diversity of rice all across the globe. Basmati is a type of
long, slightly grained, aromatic grain of rice, which is grown in the Indian Subcontinent and
certain parts of South Asia as well.

It has been found in research studies that Basmati Rice has traces of the chemical compound 2-
acetyl-1-pyrroline and therefore the rice has a panda like flavor and aroma to it. Compared to
other varieties of rice, Basmati has 0.09 ppm or 12 times less of this chemical compound and
therefore it has its unique spicy flavor and fragrance. The natural aroma found in Basmati is also
found in cheese and certain cereals and fruits.

The United States and the United Kingdom has approved this flavoring agent and therefore
bakeries across both the countries use it to aromatize their products.

UAE:
The UAE does not produce rice due to limited water resources and unfavorable
weather conditions. Imports in 2021 are forecast to rise further to 1.2 million mt
(+20%) due to increased consumption and government stock building. Around
98% of this volume is expected to comprise milled and semi-milled rice. Imports in
2019 were mainly sourced from India at 470,000 mt (-24.4%), followed by Thailand
(28,862 MT, -64.8%) and Brazil (16,925 mt, +6,865%)

In 2017 UK imports came mainly from India (50%), Thailand (11%), Myanmar (10%),
Cambodia (5%), Guyana (5%) and the USA (5%).
