PART-A (10×2=20 Marks)

1. A continuous random variable X has p.d.f. f (x) = kx4 , 0 ≤ x ≤ 2. Find the value of k?

2. Find the moment generating function of the distribution given by f (x) = λe−λx , x > 0.

3. If X and Y have joint p.d.f f (x, y) = e−(x+y) , x > 0, y > 0, check whether X and Y are
independent.

4. If X and Y have joint p.d.f f (x, y) = k(1 − x)(1 − y), 0 < x < 4, 1 < y < 5, find the value
of k?

5. Write the applications of ’F’-test and χ2 -test.

6. Define Student’s t-test for single mean.

7. List the basic assumption in ANOVA.

8. Write any two advantages of LSD.

9. Write down the formulae for UCL and LCL for np-chart.

10. List the types of control charts.

11. (a) (i) A random variable X has the following probability distribution.

(b) (i) The joint p.d.f. of X and Y is given by

13. (a) (i) In a sample of 900 members has the mean 3.4 cms and S.D. 2.61 cms. Is the sample
from a large population of mean 3.25cms and S.D. 2.61 cms? If the population is
normal and its mean is unknown, find the 95% fiducial limits of true mean. (8)
(ii) The mean of two large sampling 1000 and 2000 members are 67.5 inches and 68.0
inches respectively. Can the samples regarded of drawn from the same population
of S.D. 2.5 inches? (8)

(b) (i) A sample of 26 bulbs gives a mean life of 990 hours with a S.D. of 20 hours. The
manufacturer claims that the mean life of bulbs is 1000 hours. Is the sample not
up to the standard? (8)
(ii ) The nicotine contents in milligrams in two samples of tobacco were found to be as
follows:

14. (a) The following table gives the number of refrigerators sold by 4 salesmen in three months.

(b) Analyze the variance in the following Latin Square of yields (in Kgs) of paddy where
A, B, C, D denote the different methods of cultivation.

15. (a) The following table data show the values of the sample mean x̄ and the range R for the
samples of size 5 each. Determine whether the process is in control.
