Advantages
• the inherent compressive strength of concrete is fully
utilised.
• The unique alloy steels used to make the prestressing
tendons are fully used.
• Tension fractures are avoided, lowering the danger of
corrosion of steel components.
• Shear stresses are decreased.
• Using a component with a lower cross section can
result in a weight decrease for any given span and
loading situation.
What is pre stressed concrete and how is it • Individual precast concrete components can be joined
together to produce a composite part.

What is a post and pre tensioning system ?

Basic concept
Pre-tensioning the spokes of a bicycle wheel A spoke in a
bicycle wheel is pre-tensioned to the point where there is
always residual tension in the spoke.
Internal stresses are produced in concrete (often using
tensioned steel) for the following reasons.

Types of Prestressing Systems

Pre-Tensioning System and Post-Tensioning System

The tendons are tensioned before the placement of the

concrete in pre-tensioning
pre-tensioning. In this method, the con-
crete is introduced by a bond between steel & concrete.
Tendons are temporarily held in place by abutments or
stressing beds. The concrete member is then poured
between and over the wires. After the concrete has
reached the requisite strength, the wires from the bulk-
head are severed and the pre-stress is transmitted to
the concrete member.

A method of prestressing concrete by tensioning the

tendons against hardened concrete. In this method,
the prestress is imparted to concrete by bearing. The
concrete component is cast with ducts for the wires
during post-tensioning
post-tensioning. After the concrete has reached a
suitable strength, wires are threaded into the ducts, ten-
sioned from both or one end by jack/jacks, and secured
by wedges to the anchoring plates at the ends at the Explain the making and process of [machinery used ] and

Initial stage- The member is under pre-stress but is not

subjected to any superimposed external loads. Further
subdivision of this stage is possible.
1. Before pre-stressing: Concrete is weak in carrying
loads. Yielding support must be prevented.
2. During pre-stress:
a. Steel: This stage is critical for the strength of ten-
dons. Often the maximum stress to which the wires will be
subjected throughout their life may occur at this stage.
b. Concrete: As concrete has not aged at this stage,
crushing of concrete at anchorages is possible, if its
quality is inferior or the concrete is honeycombed. Order
of prestressing is important to avoid overstress in the
concrete.
• Tendon 3. At transfer of pre-stress: For pre-tensioned members,
