ANYONG LUPA

Mount Apo, at 9,692 feet (2,954 metres), is an active volcano in


the southern part of the central highlands; it is the highest peak in
the Philippines. The island has narrow coastal plains, and broad,
fertile basins and extensive swamps are formed by the Mindanao
and Agusan river systems.

Mayon Volcano, active volcano, southeastern Luzon,


Philippines, dominating the city of Legaspi. Called the
world's most perfect volcanic cone because of the symmetry
of its shape, it has a base 80 miles (130 km) in
circumference and rises to 8,077 feet (2,462 metres) from
the shores of Albay Gulf.

Mount Makiling, or Mount Maquiling, is a dormant


stratovolcano located in the provinces of Laguna and
Batangas on the island of Luzon, Philippines. The
mountain rises to an elevation of 1,090 m (3,580 ft) above
mean sea level and is the highest feature of the Laguna
Volcanic Field.
Taal Volcano is part of a chain of volcanoes along the
western side of the edge of the island of Luzon, which were
formed by the subduction of the Eurasian Plate underneath
the Philippine Mobile Belt. Taal Lake lies within a 25–30 km
(16–19 mi) caldera formed by explosive eruptions between
140,000 and 5,380 BP.

The Chocolate Hills form a rolling


terrain of haycock-shaped hills –
mounds of a generally conical and
almost symmetrical shape. Estimated
to be from 1,268 to about 1,776
individual mounds, these cone-shaped
or dome-shaped hills are actually
made of grass-covered limestone
Banaue rice terraces, system of irrigated rice
terraces in the mountains of north-central
Luzon, Philippines, that were created more than
2,000 years ago by the Ifugao people. Although
located in several villages, they are collectively
known as the Banaue rice terraces.

Mount Banahaw (or Banahao) is


located on the island of Luzon, some
80 km SE of Manilla. At 2,158 m
high, it is the tallest of a group of a
stratovolcano complex that included
San Cristobal (1,470 M)
and Banahaw de Lucban (1,870 M).

Mount Pinatubo, volcano, western Luzon, Philippines, that erupted in 1991 (for the first time in
600 years) and caused widespread devastation. Mount Pinatubo is located about 55 miles (90
km) northwest of Manila and rose to a height of about 4,800 feet (1,460 m) prior to its eruption.
Background. Canlaon, part of the Negros Volcanic Belt, is a large stratovolcano dotted with
numerous flank cones and craters, many of which contain lakes. The summit
of Kanlaon contains a 2-km-wide, elongated caldera with two craters. One is inactive and
contains a crater lake.
