6201 – Global Distribution Strategy,
Individual Assignment Topics, S2 2021
Due Date: 19 September 2021 (please submit via link on Canvas).
Please choose and write a report on one of the topics below.
1. Using traffic data from the Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics (BITRE)
analyse and discuss long term trends in the Australian airfreight market. For example, you may
note why Australian outbound and inbound airfreight and mail volumes have performed
differently, and be sure to spend time on regional trends (i.e. AUS‐China) and developments
by airline. In a next step, imagine you are a gold miner based in Australia that aims to find new
international markets (to date they have sold domestically only). Using this airfreight data,
derive an international distribution strategy for this gold company that involves a discussion
on distribution channels, (up to three) target markets and transport modes/capacity. A basic
dataset with carrier statistics showing inbound and outbound freight/mail tonnage and
passenger statistics by month and airline (from Jan 2009 ‐ May 2021) will be provided on
Canvas. The data can also be downloaded and hence (potentially) updated from the BITRE
website (www.bitre.gov.au). Students should also discuss future prospects for Australian
import and export airfreight.
2. Imagine you are an Australian cotton producer that likes to expand from domestic distribution
to exporting your produce. Using the World Development annual data for the period between
1990 and 2019, which you can download from Canvas (or World Bank, 2020), analyse and
discuss trends in that data and identify five target markets that are best for distributing your
cotton. As part of your distribution strategy, also discuss distribution channels, transportation
modes (assume that your aim is to undertake a low‐cost operation) and potential distribution
partners. Students should discuss future prospects for containerized cotton exports and
imports in the context of Australia.
Please submit a one‐page summary of your proposed assignment (how you plan to approach the
data analysis and at least two questions or hypotheses you would like to test/discuss) via Canvas
no later than 24 August 2021. We will provide you formative (unmarked) feedback on those
proposal that is aimed to provide you some guidance on what we expect in the full report/written
assignment.
Please note that there is a limit of 4,000 words (15 pages max. in total, including everything) for
this assignment so keep your text short, structured (introduction, main text, conclusions) and
precise. In addition to the trends you should also discuss the limitations of your analysis and the
available data more generally.
Please post any questions on the Canvas assignment question board.
