Homework 2.1

Classification of Matter and Basic Separation Technique

A. Classify each of the following as an element or compound. If the sample is an

element write Element. If it is a compound, classify and write whether acid, base
or salt.
Element 1. Platinum
Compound- Salts 2. Potassium bromate
Element 3. 24-K gold
Compound- Base 4. Baking powder
Compound- Base 5. Cuticle remover
Compound- Acid 6. Aspirin
Element 7. Fluorine
Compound- Salt 8. Iodized salt
Compound- Salt 9. Detergent salt
Element 10. Barium

B. Classify each of the following as Homogeneous or Heterogenous.

Heterogeneous 1. Blood
Heterogeneous 2. Liquid milk
Homogeneous 3. Brass
Homogeneous 4. Salt water
Homogeneous 5. Iron and aluminum fillings
Heterogeneous 6. Cup of coffee
Homogeneous 7. Sugar and salt
Homogeneous 8. Sand and gravel
Homogeneous 9. Air
Heterogeneous 10. Vinegar
C. Identify the method for the separation of the following mixtures:

Use of Separatory Funnel 1. Kerosene in water

Filtration 2. Iron fillings and wood shavings

Fractional Distillation 3. Water and alcohol

Simple Distillation 4. Salt solution

Filtration 5. Powdered chalk in water

Distillation 6. Soil with gasoline

Fractional Distillation 7. Crude oil processing to separate diesel from gasoline

Centrifugation 8. Blood components

Centrifugation 9. Sand and water

Use of Separatory Funnel 10, oil and water

D. Give the methods that can be used to separate the components of the mixture.
Write the methods in their proper order.

1. Salt, water, and iron fillings

STEPS:

1st Separation Method to use: Use of Magnet

1. Take a magnet and wrap a plastic around it to separate the iron fillings from
the rest of components.

2nd Separation Method to use: Simple Distillation

2. Water has a much lower boiling point than salt. When the solution is heated,
the water evaporates.

2. Sand, water and oil

STEPS:
1st Separation Method to use: Decantation

1. Oil is insoluble therefore it will float on water so it can be easily decanted.

2nd Separation Method to use: Filtration

2. Filter the mixture and the sand will be separated from the water.
