“The Harsh Reality of Beauty Cosmetics: Ending Animal Testing and Cruelty.”

Francesca Marie Alexandrea P. Cuba

Over the years, millions of animal suffer and die at the hands of the manufacturers in the
beauty industry. Imagine yourself waking up to a sharp sting of a needle and then in a span of a
few hours, you are not sure whether you are still alive or possibly disabled due to a certain
chemical being tested unto you. These are what animals probably feel on a daily basis: fear and a
feeling of uncertainty for their lives. Furthermore, as these continue to take place, increased
awareness and campaigns for ending animal cruelty have arisen and modern alternatives for it
have been conducted by researchers and scientists to hopefully hinder such occurrence.

In hopes of creating a safe and secured environment for the animals in the future, a lot of
campaigns and organizations have formed petitions wherein these are addressed to government
officials or a public entity and are signed by numerous individuals. Such organizations and
campaigns stated are: The Humane Society International, Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to
Animals International (SPCA), and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) are one
of the most broad and active organizations that are committed to putting an end to animal testing
as well as promoting advocacy and awareness on such inhumane activities.

As a result of their hard work and determination in their advocacies, tons of beauty brands such
as Anastasia Beverly Hills, Aether Beauty by Sephora, Cover Fx, CoverGirl, and lastly KVD
Vegan Beauty are now switching up their beauty line into a cruelty free brand. On top of that, ex-
Sephora product developer Tiila Abbitt, stated that: “There is absolutely no need to have any
animal derived ingredients in beauty products.” Indeed, beauty can be produced from materials
or ingredients that will not harm nor compromise the safety and welfare of the animals.

Attributable to the blossoming technology of today, modern alternatives are now created to
optimistically lessen the use of animal testing and cruelty in the beauty industry. Modern
alternatives which includes: cell cultures, wherein scientists where able to coax cells to grow into
3-dimensional structures, which can then be used as a more realistically way to test products or
chemicals. Moreover, with the growing use of computers, the ability to replicate aspects of the
human body is now possible and can be used to do virtual experiments and testing. Thus, only
shows how technology can help in putting an end to animal cruelty and how modern alternatives
can be likewise, an advantage for the beauty industry in the near future.

Beauty does not only mean in taking good care of yourself, above and beyond, it is also taking
care of the world and the living things existing with us. With all the deaths and sufferings of the
animals due to cruelty and testing harmful chemicals unto them, using our voices are now
important as ever. Lending a helping hand to organizations and supporting cruelty-free brands
are just one of the few ways to spread awareness on this issue. Furthermore, we must value and
care for the animals the same way we value ourselves and our fellow human beings. There is no
excuse to still carry on the process of animal cruelty in the beauty industry with the ongoing
campaigns and the modern alternatives for these inhumane activities.
