3.0 Background

All machines vibrate during the process of channeling energy into the job to be done.
Machines rarely fail without giving some sort of warning. The signs that risk of failure
is usually present long before a machine totally breaks down. When faults exist in a
machine, some of the machine's dynamic processes are changed, affecting the
machine's vibration level, temporal, and spectrum vibration features. Such
improvement can act as the warning system for early detection and identification of
developing errors. The ultimate purpose of machine condition monitoring and fault
diagnostics is to obtain timely and meaningful information about the state of
equipment. It is utilized to generate precise, quantitative data about the current state
of the machinery. Operators, maintenance engineers and technicians, managers,
vendors, and suppliers are responsible to conduct machinery monitoring.

Based on the data shown in the graph of amplitude velocity versus time, only the dates
of 24 November 2019 and 31 January 2020 show the condition of the vibrating system
of a machinery at an unsatisfactory level.
5.0 Discussion
1. Define the RMS and why need to use this value.
• Root Mean Square Amplitude (RMS) is the square root of the average of the
squared values of the waveform. The RMS value of a vibration signal is an
important measure of its amplitude and useful because it related to the energy
content to vibration. The reason for using the rms value is to calculate one of
the important parameters, which is velocity, for machinery status diagnosis.

2. Why need conduct machinery monitoring?

• It is capable to detect, locating and distinguishing faults of a machine before
they become major problems, which may lead to total failures.
• To increase the lifespan of machinery while avoiding the unplanned downtime.
• To identify the vibrating components and source of vibration in machine.

3. What is overall vibration value?

• The overall vibration value for the system is good.

4. Name 3 available standard that can be used as reference to conduct the condition
monitoring activity.
• ISO 17359 – Condition Monitoring and Diagnostics of Machines, general
guideline
• ISO 13373 – Mechanical Vibration and Shock – Vibration Monitoring of a
Machine
• ISO 13381 – Condition Monitoring and Diagnostics of Machine and
Prognostics
6.0 Conclusion
In conclusion, the objectives can be achieved when completing this lab. The data
collected allowed us to determine the vibration amplitude velocity of a vibrating system
(mm/s) and to determine the time (date). We were then able to study the technique of
vibration based condition monitoring which helps in analyze the condition of a vibrating
system.
