CLASS – VI and VII
Nounis the name given to a thing, person, object (animate or inanimate) or
feeling e.g.,
Ram, man, dog, book, tree, light, love etc.
Material Noun: A noun which stands for the matter or substance of which
things are made is called Material Noun.
Examples:
This chair is made of wood.
The chain is made of gold.
Clothes are made of cotton, wool and silk.

Abstract Noun - An Abstract Noun is the name given to a quality, a state or a concept.
These are something which we can neither see nor touch but which we can only feel
or think of them.

Countable Noun - Countable nouns are for things we can count using numbers.
They have singular and a plural form. The singular form can use the determiner
"a" or "an".
Note – They have a singular and a plural form.
Examples
She has three dogs.
I own a house.
I would like two books please.
How many friends do you have?
Uncountable Noun-nouns are for the things that we cannot count with
numbers. They may be the names for abstract ideas or qualities or for physical
objects that are too small or too amorphous to be counted (liquids, powders,
gases, etc.). Uncountable nouns are used with a singular verb. They usually do
not have a plural form.

There are four types of gender nouns in English.
Masculine gender nouns are words for men, boys, and male animals.
Feminine gender nouns are words for women, girls and female animals.
Common gender nouns are nouns that are used for both males and females.
Neuter gender nouns are words for things that are not alive.

Number Noun
A noun which is used for only one person or thing is said to be in the Singular
Number. Example: girl, man, child, pen, table, chair etc.
A noun which is used for more than one person or thing is said to be in the Plural
Number. Example: girls, men, children, pens tables, chairs etc.
Teacher’s Note – Need to explain the rules of framing the plural of Nouns and give
the list of words to them in a worksheet .
Rules of Forming the Plural of Nouns
Rule 1: Most Singular Nouns form their Plurals by adding –s.
Example:
Rule 2: Nouns that ends in –s, -ss, -x, -sh, or –ch form their Plurals by adding –es
to the Singular
Rule 3: Noun that ends in –y, and the –y has a consonant before it, its Plural is
formed by changing –y into –ies; as,
Example:
Rule 4: But if the Noun ends in –y, and the –y has a vowel before it, its Plural is
formed by adding –s to the Singular
Example:
Rule 5: Noun that ends in –f or –fe form their Plurals by changing –f or –fe into –
ves
Example:
But the following Nouns form their Plurals by simply adding –s to the Singular
Example:
Rule 6: Nouns that ends in –o, if they have a consonant before them, generally
form their Plurals by adding –es to the Singular

Rule 7: The following Nouns form their Plurals by a change of the inside vowel

Singular.

Rule 13: When the subject changes from Singular to Plural the Predicate of the
sentence must change too.
