Specification
The 28730-K005 is a 27.6V (TYP) Power Supply and Battery Charger. Features include
universal input, power factor correction, multiple condition status report signal and load shedding
to prevent excessive battery drain. The unit is designed to comply with requirements of
EN60950, CSA, UL1950, VDE, EN54-4, EN54-2 (where applicable) and European Directive on
Electromagnetic Compatibility. (EN50081–1, EN50082– 1, EN61000 where applicable).

Input Output
Voltage: 110 - 230V AC Voltage 18 - 33V at 20°C (No load)
range:
Current: 1.9A @ 115V 0.95A @ 230VAC Current: 5.5A @ 27.6V
Inrush: Cold start < 40A surge (TYP) Regulation: 1% (line and load combination)
@ 220VAC @ 20°C Ambient
Frequency: 47 – 63Hz O/P: Overload Protection: Output continuous
short circuit protection
Leakage: <3.5mA @ 50Hz O/V/P: MIN 31V
MAX 33V (APPROX)
Protection: Mains input protection
(T3.15AHBCfuse)

Battery Input
A battery input/charge output is supplied for the connection of external sealed lead acid batteries
for use in the standby mode and is protected against reverse polarity connection of the batteries.
The input is protected by an 8Amp ultra fast ceramic fuse (5 X 20mm).
The battery drain caused by the PSU is typically 120mA (with no mains supply present).

Operational Information
Fault LED’s
LED 1 = Loss of mains power.
Operational when the incoming mains voltage falls outside specified limits.
LED 2 = Loss of standby power.
Operational if the battery becomes disconnected from the charger or if the battery voltage is
below 19V.
(See Load Shed feature).
LED 3 = Reduction of battery voltage.
Operational when the battery voltage falls to a voltage within the range:-
21.6 – 22.8V DC, measured at the PSU terminals.
LED 4 = Loss of battery power.
Operational when there is a charger failure.

The yellow LED’s are housed externally to the power supply enclosure positioned on the PCB
where each LED is labeled for easy identification. The LED’s meet the requirements of EN54-4
clause 5.4.

Low Battery (Load Shed – (19.0 – 20.0V @ PSU terminals)

If no batteries are connected then no output appears on +ve terminal. The battery +ve is
internally connected to the 24V output via a relay when the battery voltage exceeds the “Load
Shed” level. If a battery is connected that is below the “Load Shed” voltage the power supply
looks briefly at the battery voltage and if after approximately 1 second the voltage is below the
“Load Shed” level then the battery is disconnected from the load.

The unit can be operated from the batteries, with no mains present.
The unit can be operated from the mains, with no batteries present.

Battery Missing
During normal operation the Power Supply Unit continuously monitors the battery condition. A
fault/removal of a battery will be displayed by illuminating either LED 2 and/or LED 3 within 60
seconds.

Fault Terminal Output

The fault terminal in the normal condition will give a 21V output (approx). When any fault with
respect to the power supply unit is detected the high voltage is removed and a nominal low
voltage (less than 1V) is given. Upon the fault condition being removed the status normal signal
is re-applied. This output will require protection circuitry when used in remote field supply
applications.

This output is capable of sinking 50mA.

TDS001 2 of 3 Issue 2.02

Two sets of volt free changeover contacts are also provided, which will operate with any fault.

• Loss of mains power

• Loss of standby power
• Reduction in battery voltage
• Loss of battery charger

Battery Test – Disable

This output pin needs to be taken to 0V to activate.

Battery Temperature Compensation

A pair of flying leads is provided with a thermistor at one end and the other connected to the
PCB via a connector. The thermistor should be attached to the batteries to monitor their
temperature allowing the charger to provide temperature compensation.

Power on Output (part of 3-way pin header)

This open collector output will provide an active low when the mains supply or battery supply is
present. If both fail, the open collector will turn off.

Supply Fault Output (part of 3-way pin header)

This open collector output will provide an active low when either the mains or the battery supply
fails. If both of these are present the open collector will turn off.

Mains Fault (part of 3-way pin header)

If the mains fail, an open collector output is released (open collector).

Other Information
Regulation is specified as worst-case combination of any line, load or cross regulation.

A declaration of compliance for the unit to EN60950 can be provided.
