A. Cebuana Lhuillier Data Breach (2019)

One of the data breach in the Philippines took place at the
beginning of 2019. This was the data breach of about 900,000 clients of
Cebuana Lhuillier. Cebuana revealed that name, date of birth, email
addresses, mobile number, and in some cases income information may have
been exposed in the incident.
The breach involved an email server used for marketing. The firm
detected on January 15, 2019 attempts to use one of their email servers
as a relay to send out a spam to other domains. Further investigations
discovered unauthorized downloading of contact lists used as recipients
for email campaigns. This happened between August 5, 8 and 12 of 2018.
The incident has been reported to the NPC and the BSP is closely
monitoring the situation and coordinating with the concerned officers of
CL to ensure timely remediation and that such exposed information will
not be used for fraudulent transactions.

B. Singapore’s second health data breach (2019)

Last January, Singapore’s Ministry of Health disclosed that the
personal information of 14,200 HIV-Positive persons had been stolen and
released online.
Names, contact details(phone number and address), HIV test
results, and other medical information of around 5,400 Singaporeans and
8,800 foreigners dating back to January 2013 were among the personal
data stolen.
Milkhy Farrera Brochez, a 33 year-old US citizen who lived in
Singapore between 2008 and 2016, was the perpetrator. In September, a US
court found Farrera Brochez guilty of several counts, including
transmitting extortion threats and illegally transferring another
person’s identification and sentenced to two years in prison.
In addition, foreigners with HIV were not permitted to visit the
city state, even as tourist. Anyone staying longer than 90 days,
including for work, must now undergo required medical screening to
ensure they are HIV-free.

C. Yahoo data breach (2017)

Yahoo announced that the 2013 cyber attacks on its network had
impacted one billion accounts. Three months earlier, the company had
also revealed a separate attack from 2014 that had affected 500 million
accounts. Names, birthdates, phone numbers, and passwords of users that
were encrypted with easy-to-crack security were stolen by digital
thieves.

After the data was stolen in 2013, no one knows what happened to
it. According to intelligence acquired by InfoArmor, an Arizona cyber
security firm that that monitors the dark corners of the internet, a
hacker collective located in Eastern Europe secretly began selling
Yahoo’s material for sale in the month of August.
Yahoo argues that the 2014 and 2013 breaks are unrelated.
Investigators think, however, that the perpetrations of the 2013
intrusion were Russian, and probably related to the Russian government.
The Department of Justice accused four men with the 2014 hack in March,
including two Russian intelligence officials. According to an
indictment, the Russian government used stolen Yahoo data to spy on a
variety of targets in the US including White House and military
officials, bank CEO’s, and even Nervada Casino regulator.

As data breaching and data leaking is getting bigger it is important

nowadays to be more informative about it. Data breaches can be far more
than a passing fright; they have the potential to alter the trajectory
of our life. When sensitive information is revealed, it can cause major
problems for businesses, governments, and to us. Hackers can access us
via the internet, text messages, or the online services that we use,
whether we are offline or online. A little flaw can lead to a big data
breach if it is not addressed properly. Many of us do not pay enough
attention to modern security dangers because we are uninformed of how it
works.
