Design of 3D Beam with 3D Truss support

The shown Curved bridge is made of Structural Steel beams and passes over a river with no
columns on the river. The bridge curvature is part of a circle with a radius that can be calculated by
knowing L and a. The bridge structure is fixed-supported at one end and simply-supported with
a roller at the other end. The bridge is loaded with a distributed vertical load over its horizontal
slab. The assumed dimensions and loads are calculated as follows;

Bridge Span Length L = 10*GPA + SUID [m]


Bridge Width W=GPA+SUID/5 [m]
Bridge Curvature Height a=2*GPA [m]
Total distributed load F =( UID /1000 + ( SUID * GPA) * 10 ) [kN].

Where; UID is the student university ID, GPA is the student GPA, and SUID is the summation of
the student ID. For example, if the student ID is 1234567, then the SUID to be used is 28

The bridge shall be supported by a truss structure fixed at its top side. The truss shape design shall
be selected from the attached known standard shapes. The maximum height H of the truss cover
is 4.0 [m], and the minimum height is 3.0 [m]. The dimensions of the bridge members' cross-
sections shall be selected from the standard tables.

You are requested to design the bridge beams and truss using ANSYS workbench to find all missed
dimensions that cost the least material weight with safe conditions using a safety factor of 2.5. The
design must be achieved using all taught design procedures. Make all necessary assumptions, select
all suitable elements and boundary conditions, and find all missed dimensions.
Design Steps;
Alternative _1: All students are requested to start their
first Alternative with the shown design using BOX
sections for all beams and truss members. Assume the
design of the bridge covering-truss. Also, assume the
starting dimensions of the members' cross-sections for the
first iteration. Then through a maximum of three other
iterations, find the proper BOX cross-section dimensions
for all members to full fill the main objectives.

Alternative _2: Each student shall select one of the standard truss designs and assume all required
dimensions for the first iteration. The beams and truss cross-sections for this iteration shall be BOX
section as Alternative_1. Then through a maximum of three other iterations, find the proper BOX
cross-section dimensions for all members to full fill the main objectives.

Alternative _3: For the same structure design in Alternative_2, each student is requested to replace
the BOX cross-sections of the beams and truss members with another suitable cross-section to
reduce the structure weight assuming the starting dimensions for the first iteration. The allowed
sections are; I-sections, L-sections, angle sections, H-sections, and pipes. Then through a
maximum of three other iterations, find the proper BOX cross-section dimensions for all members
to full fill the main objectives.

In all alternatives, the number of Bays must be TEN bays or more, while the maximum number is
limited with the student license limitations of 50 bodies. Also, the number of different cross-
sections size in the structure must be Four or more different cross-section sizes. Furthermore, the
number of different cross-section types in Alternative_3 must be Four or more different types.
Finally, the weight of Alternative_2 MUST BE less than that of Alternative_1, and the weight of
Alternative_3 MUST BE less than that of Alternative_2.

The Bridge design shall be presented in PowerPoint slides with brief achievements and conclusions.

The detailed report, the PowerPoint presentation, and the three archived Workbench files shall be

The workbench models must be unique for each student. The percentage of
uniqueness will be multiplied by the summed mark to define the final mark. For
example, if a student collected 100 out of 100 and his three workbench models'
uniqueness is 80%, this student will get (80*100=80%), which is 20 out of 25 as a
final mark of his mid-term exam.
