 Lesson Proper
FILIPINO SOCIAL THINKERS
JOSE RIZAL (REFORMIST)
 Intelligence is the solution to the ills of the country.
 Their consciousness should be freed from fanaticism, docility, inferiority, and hopelessness.
 He started La Liga Filipina with the job of enlightening the minds of the people.
 Believed in Agnostic Deism – the view that God created the universe with its law, never to
interfere with it again.
 “Human problems are irrational human creations and can be solved through rational solutions. If
reason commits mistakes, only reason can correct them.”
 “What is the use of independence if the slaves of today will be the tyrants of tomorrow?”

APOLINARIO MABINI (DAKILANG LUMPO)

 Stands out as one of the greatest, if not the foremost, political philosophers of the country. He is
also one of the most comprehensive and consistent of all the Filipino philosophers.

Concept of Man and Society

 According to Mabini, “all men have been given life by God...to preserve and employ in terms of a
preordained mission, which is to proclaim God’s glory in doing what is good and just.”
 Men are by nature good and just and have the capacity to unfold his goodness and sense of justice to
others. In this context, freedom can only be understood as doing what is good and just, meaning what
is reasonable. He said: “True liberty is only for what is good and never for what is evil; it is always in
accordance with Reason and the upright and honest conscience of the individual.”
 Since life is a gift from God, man has the freedom to acquire all the means to preserve life in a
manner which does not constitute a violation of God’s will as implanted in nature. This freedom is
inalienable to man and “prior to all human law.”
 Thus, anyone who leads a luxurious life at the expense of others is guilty of violating the natural
law.

CLARO M. RECTO - FILIPINO FIRST

“So long as our economic policies remain dependent primarily on foreign “aid” and investments, and our
policy-makers remain habitual yes-men of foreign advisors, this “aid,” investment and advice, will be
directed toward the retention of the economic status quo.” – Claro M. Recto (1890-1960)

 Claro Recto may be considered as the direct intellectual descendant of Mabini. But while Mabini
focused on political philosophy, Recto concentrated on political economy, which is almost absent
from Mabini’s philosophy. The reasons for this shift in field of concentration are the conditions
that shape the minds of the two thinkers: Mabini lived during the time when the country was in
political disarray; Recto lived at the time when the Philippines was in economic turmoil.

On Nationalism
o Recto defines nationalism as “devotion to and advocacy of Filipino interests and Filipino unity and
independence, zealous adherence to our own Filipino nation and its principles, in brief, Filipino
patriotism.

Filipino Social Thinkers

 A more concrete explanation of the term is contained in his speech on the eve of the elections in 1957 when
he ran as presidential candidate of the Nationalist Citizens’ Party. Recto declared: “Our national salvation lies
first in asserting the nationalistic ideals of our heroes in their fight for emancipation and second in changing
the course of our economic efforts by giving emphasis to nationalist industrialization.”
 Recto considered the advocacy of the national interests as non-negotiable. The interest of the people should
not be sacrificed in any deal with other countries. He defended his position by saying that “there are
litigations of such nature as not to allow a concession without sacrifice of the fundamental principles and
spiritual interests, and that liberty, supreme aspiration of all peoples and the quintessence of the rights of the
Creator, cannot be subject of transactions, promises and barters.”

ISABELO DELOS REYES (LABOR ACTIVIST/ ANTHROPOLOGIST)

 Father of Filipino Socialism
 Initiated labor strikes against American business firms
 Founded ‘El Ilocano’
 He organized the first labor union, Union Obrera Democratica Filipina
 MotherTongue based Multilingual Education

 Isabelo de los Reyes, the Family man

 described himself as “having enough chaos in [him] for God to create another world.” And that
description is more than apt—it is impossible to talk about everything De los Reyes, or Don
Belong, did in his life. There is a reason why he was the Father of Philippine Folklore, the Father
of the Philippine Independent Church, the Father of Filipino Socialism, and the father of 27
children.

 Isabelo de los Reyes, the prolific writer

 De los Reyes was, before anything else, a writer. He was madly prolific, the corpus of his texts
easily dwarfing his contemporaries’. He started out in journalism, easily making his mark as a
firebrand liberal journalist and defender of press freedom in an era of conservatism. His passion
for journalism did not fade as he grew older. He owned a printing press and founded the El
Ilocano, the first fully indio-owned publication.

 Isabelo de los Reyes, the unionist and obispo

 Perhaps two of De los Reyes’ most tangible legacies to Philippine society can be found in the
movements he helped establish: the labor movement and the Iglesia Filipina Independiente.
 De los Reyes had his first brush with socialism during his stay in Barcelona, where he mingled
with anarchists, syndicalists, socialists, and other ideological thinkers. The new way of thinking
resonated with him, and on his return, he set out to organize the workers of Manila. His
patriotism fed into his desire for unionism: Only through the unity of workers could they can
defeat the imperialists.
