LESSON 1: DEFINING SOCIAL SCIENCES

OBJECTIVES:
In this lesson, you will learn to:
 Clarify the relationships and differences between social sciences and applied social
sciences
 Identify the goals and scope of counseling
 Explain the principles of counseling

various social science disciplined in addressing a wide range of issues in a
contemporary, innovative, and dynamic way.

CHAPTER II: COUNSELLING


LESSON 1: THE DISCIPLINE OF COUNSELLING

INTRODUCTION/DISCUSSION:

The magnitude and prevalence of social problems have real and profound effects
on people’s psychological conditions. Situations of psychological, injury, histories
trauma, and even culture shocks are sources of distress.
Counselling as a profession evolved out the need for institutionalized situations in
life. Professionals in this industry, called counselors, assist those needing professional
help discover meaning, cope with life stresses, and adjust to new environments.
As cases of psychological and mental health increase and situation of social
dysfunction expands, counselling becomes vital. This chapter introduces you to the
disciplines of counselling.

Processing questions:
Think a time in your life when you felt you were in crisis. Share your insights to the class
or with a partner.
1. What constituted that crisis?
2. Who did you approach during those trying moments?
3. What did he/she do to solve the crisis or to find alternative solutions?
4. Did seeking help relieve you from the crisis?

 Principles of counselling include Advice, Reassurance, Release of emotional


tension, Classified thinking, Reorientation, Listening skills, Respect, Empathy
and positive regard, Clarification, confrontation, and interpretation. Transference
and countertransference.
 Core Values is considered the heart of counselling. Experts who do counseling
must have the values of respect for human dignity, partnership, autonomy,
responsible caring, personal integrity and social injustice.
