What I Need to Know

Applied social sciences are those academic social science disciplines,

professions and occupations which seek to use basic social science
knowledge, particularly from sociology, economics and political science, and to a
lesser extent psychology, social psychology and anthropology to make an
impact on the daily life of communities, organizations and persons. Some
authorities would also include portions of economics, and in particular economic
analysis and economic planning as applied social sciences.

Applied social science is an integrated science cutting across

transcending various social science disciplines in addressing a wide range of
issues in a contemporary, innovative, and dynamic way. It aims at presenting
a well-developed understanding of social systems, social theory, and social
policy It integrates theory, social research, skills and professional experience,
and critical thinking skills necessary to fully address social phenomena.
Applied social science, therefore, is a broad field that draws on different social
theories and perspectives and combines theory and practice drawn from
different social disciplines that highlight the complexity of social issues.
The applied social sciences refer to the application of the various
disciplines of the social sciences, hence dealing with the importance of such
in the real life situations. This module will look into the functions of the applied
social sciences.

In this module you will:

1. Explain each of the functions of applied social sciences

(HUMSS_DIASS 12-IIb-42)

2. Identify situations that would require or necessitate the performance

of the various functions in local/ Philippine settings (HUMSS_DIASS

Lesson Functions of applied social
1 sciences processes

Applied social science is the application of

social science theories, concepts, methods, and
findings to problems identified in the wider society
(D. Jary & J. Jary 2000). Using this understanding
in the segmentation of social science into distinct
disciplines gives rise to the concepts of applied
social sciences that include counseling, social
work, and communication.

What is It

FUNCTIONS OF APPLIED SOCIAL SCIENCES PROCESSES:

1. Functions of Applied Social Sciences to Self-development

a. Counseling- offers guidance to individuals in various situations of conflict,

confusion, and crisis and provides the tools for the individual to address
issues of self-development.
b. Social work- offers a wide range of services, particularly in aid of liberating
the marginalized individuals and facilitating participation in the public
goods and services that are necessary for self-development.
c. Communication- empowers the individual with listening and speaking skills
in order for them to be effective. The individual has to be sure that the
message comes across accurately by considering the message itself, the
audience or receiver, and how the message is likely to be received.

2. Functions of Applied Social Sciences to Persuasion

In careers related to communication like mass media, advertising, and

business, persuasion is very essential. To persuade means being able to
convince other people to change their attitudes or behavior regarding an issue
through the communication of messages in an atmosphere of free choice.

One cannot persuade a person unless he/she has a foundation on

social sciences. It is very important that those who make the messages or
advertisements that want to persuade a client or customer must be
knowledgeable about the culture of the people in which the message is being
communicated. The heart of persuasion is the ability to understand well one’s
audience and its complexity. Persuasion energizes itself to move audiences to
desired and immediate action.
3.
Functions of Applied Social Sciences to Arts and Entertainment
Applied social sciences are also used in the arts and entertainment
industry. Arts and entertainment are reflections of a country’s culture and
society. to be able to understand and analyze the development and new
trends in the arts and entertainment, it is important to be familiar about the
people’s social and cultural conditions.
As new forms and delivery systems for entertainment flourished, there
is a great importance to understand the needs of the viewing public. It is
important to cope with the changing demands of the viewers in order to get
the viewer’s attention. The applied social sciences prove to be significant in
this aspect because a strong foundation in the study of the people’s viewing
behavior and patterns are emphasized in this field.

4. Functions of Applied Social Sciences to News and Information

Applied social science is also important in the field of journalism. The

news and current affairs sector emphasize the need for a balanced, objective,
and truthful rendering of the political and other important events as they
actually happened. Practitioners in the applied social sciences have enough
training in this regard because they have a good foundation in history and
political science. Through the application of these fields, applied social
scientists have enough skills to be able to write and report news accurately
and objectively.

5. Functions of Applied Social Science to Organizing Advocacy and

Mobilization

Advocacy groups are organized to inform and educate on public

issues, and influence people on the development of policies. Advocacy
groups also play important roles in the development of political and social
systems. Applied social sciences is a good background for advocacy and
mobilization because this field studies politics, governance, social and political
dynamics which are very important background for advocacy works.

The following are some of the different activities of advocacy. All these
activities require knowledge of the applied social sciences. It includes the
following:
a. Community organizing and mobilization- it is about helping to
mobilize constituents and build power with their communities.
b. Information dissemination- providing communities and people
the right information on important political, social and economic
issues affecting them.
c. Research- conducting research that reflects the needs of the
communities.
d. Training- training sessions that will teach successful strategies
and skills for personal and community development.

6. Functions of Applied Social Sciences to Education

The academe is one of the most relevant career tracks that applied
social scientists can pursue. The multidisciplinary approach in the
study of the applied social sciences can equip students with the skills
and expertise to work in schools, colleges, and universities. These are
significant number of subjects offered in the general education
curriculum in the secondary and tertiary levels that applied social
scientists can teach. These include history, society and culture, and
politics and government.

What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help
you master the nature of the effects of applied social sciences processes on
individuals, groups, and society. The scope of this module permits it to be used in
many different learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse
vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard
sequence of the course. But the order in which you read them can be changed to
correspond with the textbook you are now using.
In this module you will:
1. Determine the Applied Social Science processes
2. Analyze the effects of Applied Social Science processes
3. Give the importance of Applied Social Science processes

Lesson Effects of Applied Social

6 Sciences processes

Every action entails a consequence or consequences- the effects of which are

determined by the quality of the action taken. Having learned from the previous modules
about the various Applied Social Science processes (Counseling, Social Work, and
Communication), you have understood the actions done as for their application. This
time, you will proceed to discovering the different effects that these processes will have
to you as an individual, to various groups and organizations, and to the society as a
whole.
Just like what the teaching of our Hindu and Buddhist brethren about karma
says, “what we do will eventually get back to us.” Learning about the effects of the
Applied Social Science processes will provide us ample knowledge of how the Applied
Social Sciences work in our personal and social life. It will lead us to ponder about the
importance of these processes in our lives.
The Applied Social Sciences deals with using the findings of social science
disciplines to do something. The Applied Social Science processes have various effects
on the different sectors of society. Some of these processes include counseling, social
work, and communication.

The application of various ideas, concepts, and theories from the social sciences
gives significant impact to individuals, groups, and the society. The applied social
science seeks to use basic social science research and theory to improve the daily life
of communities, organizations, and persons. Thus, it is expected that its effects would
be for the betterment and positive change towards an individual, group, or society. The
effects of the applied social sciences may include awareness and knowledge of oneself
and others, attitude and value changes, behavioral changes, and structural changes.

What is It

EFFECTS OF APPLIED SOCIAL SCIENCES PROCESSES:

7. AWARENESS AND KNOWLEDGE

Self-understanding is the knowledge or awareness of one’s own character,

feelings, capabilities, or motivations. Counseling makes a person understand his/her
personality better, along with different problems that could affect him/her. Counselors
provide an avenue for individuals and groups to look at life in a better perspective.
Social work gives awareness and comprehension on various aspect of community life. It
helps provide awareness to the people about the hazards of drugs and criminality in the
community for example, through their various seminars and awareness campaigns.
Social workers are frontrunners in mobilizing the society by providing its people with
capability building trainings. They also help alleviate the people’s idea of marginalization
by spreading information for social justice.

In terms of communication, the applied social sciences process could make

people more perceptive and critical. It helps the society to clearly and intelligently see
situations. Television, radio, and newspaper provide people information on the different
issues faced by the country. Through media, people also become more aware of the
social realities. Journalism helps provide accurate and reliable information. As the 21st
century unfolds, new forms of media emerged like the social media.

The social media is a form of electronic communication (such as websites for

social networking) through which users create online communities to share information,
ideas, personal messages, and other content. Since everyone can create content
through social media, there arose the problem of fake news- the unverified misleading
information which lures readers to believe on false grounds. With the help of applied
social science practitioners, we became aware and learned how to analyze and discern
the truth.

8. ATTITUDE AND VALUE CHANGE

Attitude is a way of thinking or feeling about someone or something. Meanwhile,

value is the importance or worth a person attaches to something. What we perceive or
feel and what we value could be affected by various social phenomena presented to us
by applied social science processes. People can alter their attitudes and values in
dealing with various predicaments.
Disaster risk reduction for instance, is a good application of applied social
science. Disaster risk reduction (DRR) is a systematic approach to determine, evaluate,
and reduce the danger of catastrophes. With the information we gain from applied social
science, we develop a thinking of what to do before, during, and after calamities for
example. Media and community social workers furnish us with knowledge that can help
us modify our attitude and values into whichever is deemed necessary for the situation.
The help of counselors for those affected by the disaster is of great importance to uplift
the morale of the affected individuals.

Climate change is the change in weather patterns or conditions in a particular

place or region. Eventually, through media, its implication to the people and their
environment were revealed and explained, providing people with ample idea on giving
importance to our only habitat- planet Earth. Reports from radios, television, and
newspapers regarding climate change led people to think of alternatives to avoid earth’s
destruction. Social workers and counsellors could help people realize on caring about
the environment and could encourage them to seek solutions for the problem.

‘Bahala na’ is a phrase Filipinos use most often which could mean ‘leaving it all
up to God’, ‘come what may’, or ‘whatever will be will be’. It is a way of life, an attitude, a
habit which eventually turns into negative because people tend to be lenient and
irresponsible of their actions. With the help of counselors and communication media,
this attitude could be mitigated with the new perspectives the applied social science
processes offer. The social workers could also help by working in the grass root level of
society to encourage people to be more responsible with their attitudes and value
system.

9. BEHAVIORAL CHANGE

Behavior means the way in which one acts or conducts oneself towards others. It
could be conscious or unconscious and could be inherited or learned. Behavioral
change refers to any transformation or modification of human behavior. Applied social
science processes also brings change to behavior, thus improving the welfare of the
people and the society they are living in. For example, it is being said whenever a
person has power over other people or thing, it makes him/her corrupt. It morally
destroys their nature and fills them with destructive pride. In dealing with power,
counselors can be consulted to avoid the abuse of such which could lead into corruption
if not mitigated. The media can intervene by being watchdogs for those who are abusing
their power like in politics to stop such behavior. Social workers could also provide
training and forum so that people will start acting better like in choosing good leaders to
avoid corruption.

Conflict management is the process of limiting the differences that prevents

agreement among individuals, groups or even nations. It aims to enhance learning and
group outcomes, including effectiveness or performance in an organizational setting. In
terms of dealing with conflict, counselors taught us the idea of ‘fight or flight’- when to
defend ourselves and when to listen to the other’s point of view. Social workers help in
conflict management every time they try to resolve ground level community problems.
The media provide a holistic perspective of parties in conflict to help others discern on
how to resolve their feud.
Same goes with the peace building process. Building peace has been the aim of
UNESCO since it was founded in 1945 after the devastating World Wars. UNESCO’s
vision is to prevent war through shared humanity, solidarity and understanding.
Counselors emphasize the culture of peace especially in this diverse world and
societies for them to act in a humane way. Social workers promote respect among
individuals and groups to maintain peace and order. The media reports all about the
peace building activities around the globe to encourage people to behave in a more
harmonious way. Efforts made by the UNESCO and ASEAN are very important to
promote peace.

There is also the behavioral risk assessment which is the process of managing
workplace behaviors of employees and organizations that have negative impact on
productivity of an organization. Counselors help people in conflict with the in their
workplace to change their behavior and live a productive life. Social workers conduct
seminars about the value of life to avoid the suicide attempts of people with big
problems. The media creates entertaining content for people to focus on the positive
side of life.

10. STRUCTURAL CHANGE

The community is made up of sectors which makes up its structure. These

structures need to adapt to changes but remain strong for its continuity for future
generations. Persons and family relations deal with the issues of family matters such as
marriage, annulment and voiding of marriage, adoption, property settlements between
spouses, parental authority, support for spouses and children, emancipation,
inheritance of children from their parents and between relatives. In our country, this is
covered under the Family Code of the Philippines. In terms of family relations, there are
the counselors and social workers who work hand-in-hand to promote a strong family
since it is the basic unit of society. Media give them updates from time to time. In this
time where single parenting becoming common. Good thing there are counselors and
social workers to stop the discrimination towards single parents and their children.
Nowadays, overseas migration created a community of Overseas Filipino Worker.
Overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) represent a subset of overseas Filipinos and are
temporary migrants. Counselors help them by providing mental support since they will
be away from their families.

Gender refers to the behavioral, cultural, or psychological traits typically associated

with sex but in a broader sense. It is more of social and cultural rather than biological. In
terms of gender, counselors and social workers promote gender equality to support
people like those belonging to the vulnerable individuals like women and the LGBTQ
plus community. The media provide update and information like the SOGIE bill for the
LGBTQ to feel belongingness. In the issue of domestic violence, counselors and social
workers are there to help abused individuals. Media also promote laws like the Anti-
Violence Against Women and Children to mitigate domestic violence. Domestic violence
refers to violent r aggressive behavior within the home, typically involving the violent
abuse of a spouse or partner. Speaking about criminality and substance abuse,
counselors and social workers believe that life is important even the life of a criminal.
Criminality refers to behavior that is contrary to or forbidden by criminal law while
substance abuse is the overindulgence in or dependence on an addictive substance,
especially alcohol or drugs refers to the harmful or hazardous use of psychoactive
substances, including alcohol and illicit drugs. Hence, counselors and social workers
help these people by assessing them in order to give them another chance to be free
and enjoy life, a righteous life. Community is a group of people sharing the same
environment and interests. The way of life of a person could be shaped by the behavior
in one’s community. In terms of community life, counselors made us aware that there
are different walks of life in this society hence people should respect diversity of culture
but also correct some inhumane community behaviors such as cannibalism, the practice
of sati, slavery etc. Social workers and media help by information campaigns and news
sharing.

What I Can Do

Direction: Read the short article then write the effects of what these practitioners will

On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-
19 pandemic. Eventually, it spread across the globe to many countries (The ASEAN
Magazine, 2020). Philippines is not an exception to its spread when it recorded its first
confirmed case last January 30, 2020. With this, the government crafted Republic Act
No. 11469 or the “Bayanihan to Heal As One Act” which gives power to the president to
adopt emergency measures to respond to the needs of the Filipinos in this time of crisis.
These measures include medical response, subsidy to poor households, and economic
support. With the need for action in dealing with the crisis, the applied social science
processes came into the scene. Here are some applied social science practitioners
doing their task during the pandemic:

What’s New
ChildFund Japan

Child-focused is a one-to-one approach with sponsors for more than 40 years.

As a child-focused development organization, ChildFund Japan believes in
the intrinsic value of each child that inspires and drives us to serve them by providing
opportunity to develop their full potentials, making positive changes for their future.
Its history roots back to 1952, when it was established as a recipient body for
ChildFund International (formally Christian Children’s Fund) sponsorship funds in
support of Japanese orphans following the World War II. Individuals in America
“sponsored” a war orphaned child living in child welfare institutions, the essence of
sponsorship that inherited and continues to present. Since 1975, the work to support
children was relayed by ChildFund Japan (formally Christian Child Welfare
Association - CCWA) which has been working in the Philippines and Nepal to help
deprived, excluded, and vulnerable children, families, and communities through
meaningful, sustainable solutions. The essence of sponsorship approach is
embedded in our organizational culture that connects people one-to-one.
In 2005, ChildFund Japan was registered a Non-Profit Organization and
became the 12th member of ChildFund Alliance. In compliance with the Convention
on the Rights of the Child, we continue to serve impoverished children, families, and
communities in education, healthcare, nutrition, and income generation areas
through sponsorship, special assistance, and emergency relief and rehabilitation
programs.
Mission: ChildFund Japan is committed to promoting the rights of the child through
international development cooperation in the spirit of harmonious co-existence.
Vision: A global society that ensures every child the opportunity to develop their full
potential.
Core Values:
1. Compassion and respect for all children and cultures
2. Commitment to delivering the highest quality standards of integrity and
accountability
3. Collaboration and knowledge-sharing
4. Advocates for child rights and the interests of all children
5. Tireless optimism
6. “Tsunagari” - Connecting people

Reflection:
1. Who are the immediate beneficiaries of Childfund Japan? Why?
2. In what manner Childfund is helpful to our less fortunate children in the
society?
What is It

Social Awareness, Self-Awareness, and Self-Knowledge

Social awareness, self-awareness, and self-knowledge are very essential for

quality participation and functioning in society for they incorporate one’s appreciation
of both the inner-ecology and the social ecology. When we come to recognize that
there are other people and that they are essentially distinct and different from us,
that is the start of our social awareness that simultaneously leads us to become
conscious and aware of ourselves as beings or persons.

Social awareness is important for managing own response to change, and it

forms an essential part of interpersonal intelligence. It capacitates individuals to
appreciate diverse perspectives, contribute to civil society, and understand
relationships.
Self-awareness is an important step toward self-understanding and self-
mastery and it forms an essential part of intrapersonal and emotional intelligence. It
means having the capacity to understand your personality, behaviors, habits, and
emotions. It includes being conscious of what you are good at (strengths) as well as
what you are not good at (weakness).

Attitude and Value Change

Tensions emanating from technological, social and economic change bring
about attitude and value change. With all changes happening especially in the
climate change context, social and cultural values that may not be in support of
survival need to give way to those that are life nurturing. Our attitudes and values
must change with time, so as to allow our new abilities to survive to emerge.

Behavior Change

Behavior is acquired or developed slowly and once it’s part of your life, you
will learn the difficulty of behavioral change. It is hard to break old habits or adopt
new ones. Making a permanent change in behavior is never a simple process, and it
requires substantial commitment of time, effort and emotion. Behavioral change
management is never easy, but psychologists, therapists, physicians, and teachers
have developed a number of ways to effectively help people change their behaviors.
Applied social sciences bring in a wealth of approaches, techniques, and tools
to facilitate change on the individual level and on the group level.
Structural Change

Structural change refers to the radical shift in the way reality is organized
and does not necessarily include the substantive change.

Examples of Structural Change

1. In economic terms, the transformation of policy, legal, cultural, economic,

and/or physical aspects of an environment that impede equity for all.

2. Women were not allowed to practice any of the following:

 She is not allowed to hold public office
 She were made to look incompetent
 She were prevented to go further in education
 She was not allowed to have exposure to public service. Instead, their
exposure was in the kitchen and domestic context.

To change this, there are global efforts from public policy to social -awareness
campaign and education where organizations and companies are required to have
women representation in workplace and public affairs.

3. Family Structure
 Biological and marital relationship
 Close family ties
 Extended family
Today, the concept of family remains to be the basic unit in human relations but
does not necessarily imply living together.
4. The institution of marriage was confined to opposite sex partners but today,
there is a growing acceptance of same-sex unions and marriages across the globe.
Becoming more common and normal
a) Personal and family relations
b) Gender
c) Overseas migration of Filipino workers
d) Domestic violence
e) Single parenting
f) Community life
g) Criminality; and substance abuse
What I Have Learned

Social sciences in their broadness provide a huge theoretical resource to

explain much of the social phenomena that affect individuals, families, groups, and
communities. Applied social sciences raise the social science to a practical science
to address personal, family, group, and community problems by helping individuals
develop their capacity to fit well in the environment and by challenging the
environment to become better for individuals to flourish. Guidance and counseling,
social work, and communication and journalism provide the mechanism, tools,
methods, and processes to bridge the individual and his/ her community. Applied
social sciences are rooted in the principles of human rights, social justice, and
inclusion as well as empowering individuals, groups, and communities to develop
their full potential and well-being. When these are not realized, denied, or violated,
then applied social sciences set in with appropriate measures to transform humanity.
