Module 14:
Functions of Social Sciences and
their Application
Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear
learners, can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities,
questions, directions, exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you
to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you
step-by-step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in

each SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this
module or if you need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for
better understanding of the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to
answer the post-test to self-check your learning. Answer keys are provided
for each activity and test. We trust that you will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are
also provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on
how they can best help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on
any part of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the
exercises and tests. And read the instructions carefully before performing
each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in

answering the tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher
or facilitator.

Thank you.
Target

Just like other sciences, applied social sciences has its own functions to
enlighten and enhance the people involved in counseling social work and
communication or even the lives of its practitioners. Modules one until eighth in
the first quarter and modules one until the fifth in the second quarter all discussed
briefly but essentially, the whereabouts of the three applied social sciences-
Counselling Social Work and Communication. Since those previous discussions
provided ample information about the three applied social sciences let us now look
into its very functions.
For one this module will discuss the functions of applied social sciences,
Oorganizing Advocacy, Education and Socialization and Enculturation. After which,
these functions shall be presented alongside situations which necessitate their
application.

At the end of this module, you are then expected to:

a. Explain each of the functions of Applied Social Science

HUMSS_DIASS 12-llb-d-42.
b. Define the different functions of Applied Social Sciences.
c. Identify situations which necessitate the performance of the functions of
applied social sciences HUMSS_DIASS 12-llb-d-43.
d. Apply their knowledge about the functions of applied social sciences to a
counselling situation.

Before proceeding, make sure that you still recall the characteristics of the
different applied social sciences and the features peculiar to each of them.

Applied social sciences, is the so-called human sciences. According to

Sampa (2017), applied social sciences are the purveyors of social justice, inclusion
and caregiving. It touches almost every aspect of the human life. Applied social
sciences is a commonplace. They are situated in children, adults, groups,
communities, civil societies, the judicial system, in the correctional facilities,
present in any setting, in any audience, practically in any endeavor. Even in issues
involving ethnicity or multiculturalism, applied social sciences are still present.

Functions of Applied Social Science

Being the purveyors of social justice and the like, the following the so-
called functions of applied social sciences
1. Self- development and Applied Social Sciences
a. Counselling offers guidance to individuals in varying situations of
conflict, confusion, crisis and provides the tools for the individual to
address issues of self- development.
b. Social work offers a wide range of services, particularly in aid of
emancipating the marginalized individuals and facilitating participation
in the public goods and services that are needed for self- development.
c. Communication empowers the individual with listening and speaking
skills on order for them to be effective.
2. Persuasion and Applied Social Sciences
At the heart of persuasion, one finds the ability to understand well
one’s audience or the people that the applied social science practitioner is
dealing with. Since the applied social science practitioner deals with
people’s basic attitudes, values and beliefs about anything which concerns
life, he/she must be concerned with how he/she could convince the
audience to acknowledge a particular point-of-view. Drawing on the skills
of applied social sciences, persuasion energized itself to move the audience
to a desired action.
3. Art and Entertainment and Applied Social Sciences
One would be able to appreciate anything about life- the depression
experienced by an individual, the marginalization of the poor, or the beauty
of writing, to name a few. Since Art includes theater and drama it could
brighten the life of an applied social science practitioner as well as their
clientele and audience.
Art and entertainment require active intellectual viewing, thus, with the
knowledge about applied social sciences, viewing would become more a part
of one’s life rather than just a diversionary activity. Through art and
entertainment, we could see life differently.

3
LU_ Disciplines and Ideas in the Applied Social Sciences_Module14
4. News and information and Applied Social Sciences
The emergence of various news outlets, channels and information
dissemination platforms increased the participation of both practitioners and
audience in the news making and consumption.
The new media and social media provide the possibility of driving the
democratization of information by undercutting the agenda setting of large media
outlets and their ability to control the flow of news and information. The society is
informed just by simply reading, listening or watching.
Applied social science in this context can provide encouragement and
empowerment to underserved communities.
5. Organizing advocacy and Applied Social Science
Today, where freedom of speech is a common place, organizing advocacy has a
become a contributory factor to social cohesion where individuals and groups find
themselves having parallel interests, convene to raise their issues to political
platforms and try to find public solutions through policies.
6. Education and Applied Social Sciences
Education as a process is a well-recognized global Framework and as a means
of socialization and enculturation. It is the process which improves knowledge and
skills and it brings about hope to make the world a better place to live in, where
respect is a common place, to ensure that the youth are guided towards a
productive existence and for them to situate themselves in the proper perspectives.
Education has played a big role in the reduction of poverty, social exclusion,
ignorance, oppression, and war, And, the best defense for every individual, group
and community is to at least have a good education for their empowerment and
protection from any threat to their humanity.
7. Socialization and Enculturation and Applied Social Sciences
Socialization is the process by which society turns an individual from being a
child into a full-fledged responsible adult or from being an outsider to an insider.
This process is accompanied by enculturation where the transformation of the
individual or the group or the communities presupposes the acquisition of a
corresponding culture.
The skills learned in the applied social sciences can enrich both socialization
and enculturation.
The aforementioned functions of applied social sciences would bring about
changes in the clientele and audiences of the applied social sciences- the
individual, the groups or the communities. In the individual, who is the base of the
groups and the communities, self-actualization could be achieved, socialization
skills could be enhanced, persuasion could be intensified, appreciation of the arts
and entertainment could be qualified, the ability to organize and actualize an
advocacy could be nurtured and the desire to be educated could be harnessed.
Let us now situate those functions in the real time and real-life scenarios,
several instances will be cited and then you shall be required to write stories of
your own for your DIASS portfolio on how you could relate to any one of such
functions.

Self-development and Applied social sciences

This function of applied social sciences is necessary when and where one
needs to nurture the innate characteristics. On example is the need for one who is
impassioned towards helping other people, particularly the poor people to cultivate
more such attachment. Therefore, self-development would be actualized.
Concretely, a classic example is extending counselling service to other people as in
peer counselling where a friend or a classmate who could be having difficulty with
her studies or one who could be experiencing love relationship issues may be
enlightened when given a piece of advice. Another one is the service extended by a
Social Worker to help provide shelter to the street children who could be given the
opportunity to be housed in the Bahay Kalinga or in any DSWD center or help
protect the abused women and be set free from their perpetrators. Lastly it comes
in helping the viewers or listeners or readers understand fully and correctly any
news item or any news article like the whereabouts of the Covid 19 through bias-
free, accurate and real-time news items or articles.

Organizing Advocacy and Applied social sciences

This function is required in scenarios where the individual needs to emphasize

on a certain belief or philosophy and needs the support of identified individuals of
groups or even the community for that matter. It comes in thinking out loud
whatever thought is running in your mind and you reduce that thought into a line
that would have an imprint in the minds of the people around you, maybe a
statement that would elicit the support of the community. For example, with the
health crisis we are in now, the World Health Organization organized the advocacy
“Stay home, save lives” (www.who.int) so as to prevent the fast spread of the
dreaded covid 19 and to save the medical frontliners from being infected.

Socialization and Enculturation and Applied social sciences

As a member of the community, or the society, an individual need to be

transformed to become a full-fledged significant adult member therein. The
transformation, however, could not be as abrupt but must follow a process which
would involve significant others with whom he/she mingles with as well as
influenced by the culture which obtains in his circle. A classic example would be
the instance of transforming a nonchalant kid to a responsive and responsible
teenager to a matured young adult. The child of 5 cannot be five years old all
throughout but must grow physically, socially and psychologically to allow him/her
to mingle with other people in a more significant manner. The socialization which
takes place in the transformation shall involve primarily the family members and
then goes out to the friends, neighbors and others. The practices and even the
behavior which that kid would be witnessing would somehow affect his own
perception and eventually affect his growth. Same is true with how the kid would
be influenced by the new media and other social media platforms the kind of
transformation the kid will undergo would be a manifestation of how much he has
socialized and the depth of his enculturation.

Education

In whatever field of the applied social sciences, education is always a basic

principle. For instance, under counselling, one learns about the principles and
clientele of counselling, processes and methods involved in actual counselling, the
ethical standards which govern the counselors and their rights responsibilities and
accountabilities and others. Under Social Work aside from the principles,
processes and methods clientele, ethical standards, rights responsibilities and
accountabilities, one gets to know about the core values of social work. Lastly,
under communication, one obtains information about the goals and scope and
principles of communication and the elements and levels of the communication
process and one learns to distinguish the appropriate communication media
channel(s) to be used in different settings and situations.

Persuasion
Persuasion could not just be associated with communication as it could also
hold true when it comes to counselling and in the actualization of the core values of
social work. Obviously, in terms of communication, the journalist or broadcaster
or the artist, as the case may be, needs to be convincing enough to persuade
his/her listeners or viewers or readers to believe in the article or the ads on the
television or a blog in the Instagram. In Counseling, a counselor is duty-bound to
make a client or a counselee to submit herself/himself to the counseling process,
therefore, the former must talk with all honesty and accuracy and has to manifest
an excellent listening skill. In this manner, we can say that the counselee would
more likely undergo the counselling process. Lastly, a social worker needs to
possess an excellent social skill to be able to win the trust and confidence of
his/her clientele.

Activity 3. Following the Counselling methods and process, conduct an actual

peer counselling to friend whom you know has been going through a difficult
situation. First, conduct a needs assessment (needs assessment guide is found in
Fig.1) where you shall be asking a friend or neighbor some questions to bring you
to the second step where you shall be preparing a short counselling program or
plan. The counselling plan format is found in Fig 2. After which, you are going to
conduct the actual counselling. In the process of counselling, you should already
be monitoring your counselee for possible positive changes. Lastly, you have to
evaluate the program which you implemented.

Your output must be written or encoded on an A4 bond paper. Include your

needs assessment result, your counselling plan/ program, the actual
implementation result, your monitoring scheme and the evaluation of your
counselling program.
