Worksheet 3.

More on impulse and momentum
Solve some more problems involving the ideas of
momentum and impulse.
1 Calculate the momentum of a stone of mass 0.50 kg moving at 30 m/s.

2 Which has more momentum, a dog of mass 10 kg running at 15 m/s or

the cat that it is chasing, which has a mass of 8.0 kg and is running at 16
m/s?

3 Calculate the impulse of a force of 150 N that acts for 24 s.

4 A car of mass 800 kg is travelling at 10 m/s.

a Calculate the car’s momentum.
The car accelerates to a speed of 20 m/s.
b Calculate its momentum now.
c By how much has the car’s momentum increased?
A force must act in order to make the car go faster. The impulse of the
force is equal to the change in the car’s momentum.
d Write down the value of the impulse of the force.
e The force acts for 20 s. Calculate the size of the force.

5 A ball is lying on the ground. A footballer kicks the ball with a force of 40
N. The force pushes on the ball for 0.6 s.
a Calculate the impulse of the force on the ball.
b State the momentum of the ball after it has been kicked.
The ball has a mass of 2.0 kg.
c Calculate the speed of the ball after it has been kicked.
