An ideal way of assessing students learning

In the current education system, the focus is more on tests and exams than on learning
outcomes. Most of the schools look like an assembly line with a prescribed menu for a child who
has to go through the motion without a choice with added pressure of achieving pro ciency.
Instead, it should be a laboratory for child to go through his/her self re ection and explore their
own talent and then look at opportunities to excel. Albert Einstein said “If you judge a sh by its
ability to climb a tree it will live his whole life thinking he is not intelligent.

Our education system to some extent promotes rat race among our children. Most of the schools
and colleges expect students to write exact answers according to the text written in the
prescribed books. Subjects like history in our curriculum want each student to learn dates and
events so that they can clear the exams.

I think way of assessment of students especially in India should be changed if we want our nation
to reach new heights in future.

Wide variety of subject options should be provided at an earlier age than 10th class to students in
schools. This will help in student discovering his talent and areas of interests early.

Students are given projects in there higher classes which is also evaluated and its marks are
included in there nal result but it can be seen that only few students sincerely do the project
research on their own. Most of the students go to there nearby stationary shops and get ready
made plagiarised projects. Same is the situation in most of the universities in our country as most
of the internship certi cates are fake.

So to improve the education system students can be given more practical based projects, they
can be given exams that test a students understanding of the concept by asking real life based
application questions. Syllabus should be more case study based and should give emphasis on
scenario analysis and problem solving. Teaching methods like story telling based pedagogy, art
integrated education, visual teaching can be used. Students should be empowered with skills like
innovative skills, communication skills and problem solving skills. Logical and critical ability of
students must be judged via exams rather than mugged up de nitions and important points.

Contemporary subjects like arti cial intelligence and environmental education can be also taught.

These changes will help in making the mind of a student well formed mind rather than well lled
mind.

Besides this, students must be taught in depth about morals of life inculcated with humanistic
values. Small test of this can be taken and students can be assessed on this accordingly.

To conclude, I would like to say the purpose of education is overall development of a person so
that he/she can contribute to the future. Don’t let this fade away.
