Give Up Tomorrow is a documentary film that was directed by Michael Collins and

produced by Marty Syjuco about the case of Chiong sisters. Francisco “Paco” Larranaga and 6
others were accused that they raped and murder the Chiong sisters. Even if there are witnesses
that Paco is innocent, the judge of the court still continued the case without hesitation. A state
witness suddenly appeared and admitted that he was one of the suspects who murdered the
Chiong sister, because of his confession and the plea of the Chiong Family the judge disregarded
the over 40 witnesses of Paco Larranaga and gave the 7 accused a two life sentences. After the
judge gave the sentence to the 7 accused, he was found dead in a hotel and they found a suicide
note that he killed himself all by himself. But then, the Chiong Family wasn’t happy for the
sentenced of 7 accused, they want death penalty, and ex-President Erap Estrada was not
contented with the sentenced so the DOJ made a move to appeal the decision and upgrade the
sentenced to death penalty. Paco Larranaga asked for help to Spain government when the death
penalty sentenced started, and after they hear the request of Paco, the Spain government helped
him and they brought Paco to the Spain and they handle his case. This film is all about how our
justice system is rotten, because in this film the unequal privilege or justice between people can
be seen, and the corruption specifically bribery was also included.
Actually after watching this documentary I realized that our government are so rotten
because of the unfair justice between people, maybe they’re doing these because of the influence
of those who have power like, rich people who give them money to control them. Cusay (2017)
mentioned that in a country where the elite and rich are more powerful, only poor Filipinos are
victims of injustice or unfair process, those who have nothing to protect themselves against the
opponents they are the usually victims. It is familiar with the Richelle Sagang case wherein
Richelle is a housemaid and murdered by her employer and two workmates, and it looks like her
employer are rich because until now they are not yet arrested and there is still no justice for
Richelle. This is also similar to the documentary, because the family Larranaga has nothing to do
but to pray for their son, even if they have money to protect their son they cannot do anything,
because the Chiong family is more powerful than them, because if you can see Thelma Chiong
has a sister which is Cheryl Jimenea was at that time Ex-President Erap Estrada’s personal
secretary, so she had a source or a power to make Paco more involved in the case. It looks like
Paco is one of the poor people but not literally poor that he cannot fight for himself, and he
cannot protect himself. He is like a poor Filipino that experienced the unfair justice in the
Philippines. The unfair or unequal justice that can see in the documentary is also happening here
in the Philippines today.
This kind of government that we have are so different to the other countries like we have
the corruption or the bribery that are most common to us, It is the way of people who have power
to manipulate things that they want, they can give a bribe to the officials to get their wants on the
right time. Bribery is the offer or acceptance of anything of value in exchange for influence on a
government/public official or employee (Reuters, 2017). Just like in the documentary, we
noticed that every officials that involved in the case of Chiong sisters got promoted when the 7
accused are convicted, they are promoted while they there are 7 people who are suffering in a jail
even they are not guilty. I’m so disappointed that even the officials in the government are corrupt
in the form of bribery, they prefer the money rather than the justice of a person just to be rich.
They do not care for the people who suffers even though they’re not guilty, they didn’t care
about the people who surrounds them, they just think on how to become rich, and they just only
think for themselves.
I hope there could be change in the unequal privilege or justice between people, not only
for those who have power but to all people who need their rights and justice, and also in the
corruption or bribery in the government because, it is so unfair especially for those who fight
properly for their own sake, maybe the one journalist in the documentary was correct, she said “it
is a shame for the Philippines, it is a shame for the law enforcement, it is a shame for the justice
system, and nobody cares”, they do not care about what will happen to the image of the
Philippines. Maybe when the right time comes our government will be good or just I say better
than the other countries, but still they cannot change their wrong doings in our country, they
cannot change what they did, because they will not be able to return the past. I don’t want to be
against to the government because, I know they are doing everything just to improve our
country, and to make our country safer, but they cannot remove from me that the justice system
here in the Philippines today is rotten, and I know someday my standpoint about the government
can be change.
