Fluid Mechanics

 Problem Statement:
A steady, 2D incompressible flow field in xy-plan has a stream function given by 𝛹 = 𝑎𝑥3 + 𝑏𝑦 +
𝑐𝑥, where a, b and c are constants having values: 𝑎 = 0.50 𝑚.𝑠-1, 𝑏 = − 2.0 𝑚𝑠-1 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑐 = −1.5 𝑚𝑠-
1
. Express:
(a) Expression for velocity component 𝑢 and 𝑣.
(b) Plot several streamlines of the flow in the upper-right quadrant.
 Assumptions and approximation:
We assume that flow is steady, incompressible and two-dimensional which implies that:
𝑤=0
Neither 𝑢 nor 𝑣 depend on 𝑧.
 Physical Laws:
For a 2D incompressible flow in the xy-plane, the continuity equation would be applied.
 Solution:
(a)
∂ (ψ )
u=
∂y

u= (a x 3+ by+ cx)
∂y
u=0+b+ 0
u=b
Where 𝑏 = − 2.0 𝑚𝑠-1

u=−2.0 ms−1
Now,
∂(ψ )
v=
∂x
−∂
v= ( a x3 +by + cx)
∂x

v=−(3 a x 2 +0+ c)

v=−3 a x 2−c
By putting values of a and c
