C-113 Applied Mechanics
Justifications
1. The course Applied Mechanics is the basic course for engineers, which integrates knowledge of
Physics, Mechanics and Mathematics for solving complex engineering problems.
1. Applied Mechanics deals with identifying, formulating and analyzing reasonably complex
mechanisms using first principles of engineering sciences and mathematics.
2. Applied Mechanics deals with design solution of simple problems, which have reasonably
association with environmental considerations also.
3. Applied Mechanics deals with simple experiments, analysis and interpretation of data
limited to simple statically problems.
4. Sustainable solutions are important in Civil and other Engineering.
5. Many Civil/Mechanical Engineering analysis, simple or complex, starts with forces and
their effects on bodies i.e. mechanics.
C124 Basic Civil Engineering – Course Outcomes
Justifications:
Civil engineer is the key person who undertakes all civil engg. activities which is related
with overall development of the society.
Relationship between civil engineering and other branches of Engg. & Technology is of
vital importance.
Knowledge of common civil engg. projects such as buildings, roads, bridges, dams etc.
become important part of study.
Green buildings and eco-friendly constructions are the need of the hour and it is related
with environment.
For measurement of distances and angles student uses modern surveying instruments.
An introduction to advances in civil engineering like RST, GPS & GIS is important for
lifelong learning of a student.
Justification:
1. Course outcome of errors is dealing with the analysis of errors in the output to verify the
acceptance of quality of outputs in relevance to the standards specified for different types of
surveys. So the process of calculating the actual error with permissible error is contributing
to Problem analysis Program outcome. This CO also contributes to the Program outcome of
professional ethics of accepting the error if any and rectifying it to deliver professional
output honestly.
2. Course outcome of field reports is dealing with preparation of field reports in numerical and
drawing forms for different types of surveys. The use of surveying instruments as tools is
required to gather the data required for field reports. This data is processed manually or by
software to provide drawings and quantities for the existing ground or proposed project
report which is a part of design contributing to Problem analysis as Program outcome.
3. Course outcome of Control surveys contribute to the program outcome of knowledge to a
very large extent as it is the back bone of professional practice in all domains of Civil
Engineering. The Course outcome of control survey are practiced in the form of surveying
project which involve planning, organizing, coordinating and controlling with effective
communication. Being the team leader or a part of the team is also an important attribute
trained and tested during this Course outcome of control survey.
4. The course outcome of Electronic terrain model is also contributing as an effective tool
required while performing some of the Civil Engineering Projects. The use of ETM is also
important for development of project design.
C221.Structural Mechanics-II
RATIONALE
Structural Mechanics deals with analyzing complex mechanisms using first principles of
engineering sciences and mathematics. Hence first CO contributes to problem analysis
and Civil Engg. Structural analysis. It also contributes to life long learning of civil engg.
students
Problem analysis in civil engineering structures is very important before arriving at design
solutions. Therefore COs 2, CO3 & CO 4 are closely associated with PO No.1& 2 and
PSO No.1.
Basic concepts in the subject encourage communication skill in civil engineering graduate.
Hence CO.1 is closely related with communication skill.
C222. SURVEYING-II
Justification:
1. Course outcome of project survey is contributing to the program outcome of
knowledge as it is essence for collection of data relevant to land based decision making
required for all Civil engineering Projects. The use of surveying instruments as tools is
required to gather the data required for field reports. The investigation of geographic
data such as distances, angles and elevations is conducted during the project outcome
of Project Survey. Being the team leader or a part of the team is also an important
attribute, which is observed and tested during this Course outcome of Project survey.
2. Course outcome of Mapping is dealing with preparation of field reports in numerical
and drawing forms for different types of surveys. The communication of important
parameters and outputs of Survey takes place through the Mapping. The program
outcome of Ethics is followed by using the legal software and being honest about the
opinion and outputs.
3. Course outcome of Software as a tool is contributing to the design and investigation
program outcomes, which are essential for professional practice in all domains of Civil
Engineering. The Course outcome of software is also a part of lifelong learning to keep
updated with revisions of software and their use in Civil Engineering Practice.
C223 BUILDING CONSTRUCTION AND DESIGN
Justification:
The course deals with fundamental principles of building planning and design. Hence Pos 1
and 3 higher weighs and PSO 1get higher weighs.
The study of rules and regulation of government for preparation and approval of Municipal
drawing.
Low cost housing concept and schemes has economical, environmental, social and ethical
aspect.
The planning and designing of building with consideration of Building Services, Finishes
and thermal insulation methods and technique which has, environmental, social and
economical aspect.
1. By applying programming and logical knowledge, the computer based solution for
matrix operations and civil engineering application is arrived. Hence medium
weight is given to PO1(Knowledge)
2. To write the programs in C language, firstly the problem analysis is done for a civil
engineering problem. Hence low weight is given to PO2 (Problem Analysis)
3. All programs are done in this course in ‘C Programming’ language which is a
software tool. Hence high weight is given to PO5 (Tools)
4. Civil engineering problems are analyzed and programmed in the software
application, hence high weight is given to PSO3 (Application Tool)
1. The design of steel structures should be economical and safe, to achieve that students
should get the knowledge of load combinations and plastic analysis design. Hence
the High weight is given to the PO1(Knowledge)
2. Limit state design is a design procedure in which the strength of the steel member
beyond elastic limit also considered. This design procedure is adopted in India for
construction of various steel buildings design.
Hence the high weight is given to PO3 (Design)
3. Various components of steel building are subjected to different types of forces like
compression, tension and bending. Hence each member is designed as per the nature
of the force to avoid failure of the structure. Hence analysis is necessary before
starting the design. Hence Low weight is given to PO2 (Analysis)
4. By understanding the design procedure of steel structures, any structure which is
subjected to heavy loading can be designed. Example, thermal power plant
construction, which has heavy machinery to be accommodated in the structure. And
power is important is day to day life. In this way studying steel structural design
helps to the society. Hence the minimum weight is given to PO6. (Society)

C314 Environmental Engineering I
Justification:
1. Course outcome of population forecast is dealing with the analysis various population forecasting
methods such as arithmetic, geometric mean, logarithmic etc. These methods are very important for
calculating future population and according to that water demands. So while designing any water
treatment unit population is the most important factor. So the process of calculating population using
various methods is contributing to problem analysis program outcome.
2. Course outcome of Design unit operation is dealing with deign of various water treatment units
such as flocculator, sedimentation tank, filters, etc. Problem analysis of various treatment units is very
important in concept point of view. So this is considered as one of the program outcome. The course
outcome of design unit operation is practiced in form of various water treatment projects which
involve designing, applicability and future water demands etc. Various tools such as WATERGEMS,
SEWAR CAD were used for calculation of water demands then using these software water
distribution systems can be designed.
3. Course outcome of advance treatment of water contribute to the program outcome of knowledge to
a very large extent as increase in population there is need to develop different cost effective and
economical water treatment process. The Course outcomes of advance treatment are practiced in the
form of various environmental projects.
4. The course outcome of supervise plumbing is also contributing as an effective tool required while
distributing water to consumers tap. Designing of plumbing system is very important also their
maintenance should be taken care.
Justification
The course deals with fundamental principle of management and its effective application
in organization. Hence Pos 1 and 2 get higher weighs
Optimization techniques are tools which are necessary for effective management and
decision making in construction industries. Hence medium weighs are Pos 5 has high
weighs, 6 and 7.
The success working of organization depends upon a quality inspection and control which
has environmental, economical and ethical aspects.
The fundamental knowledge and technique of disaster management is necessary has
economical, environmental, social and ethical aspects.
Justification:
1. Geometric design of highways deals with the dimensions and layout of visible features of
the highway and fulfills the requirements of the driver and the vehicle, such as comfort,
efficiency and safety. Proper knowledge of geometric design while designing the road will
help in the reduction of accidents and their severity. Various road geometric aspects are
analyzed such as requirement of super elevations, widening, sight distance, set back
distance etc. The proper material investigations with modern tools for finding out the
physical properties of soil, aggregate and binder and also traffic intensity are required for
optimum crust design of flexible and rigid pavement.
2. To meet the challenge in the optimum design, construction, operation and maintenance of
sustainable road infrastructure in the country using alternate and new materials and also
selection of appropriate pavement type requires through knowledge and investigations
with modern equipment helps in assessing the property and suitability of material in
infrastructure projects. During collecting the data, graduate will understand the importance
of ethics, team work and communication.
3. Traffic engineering pertains to the analysis of the behavior of traffic and to design the
facilities for the smooth, safe and economical operation of traffic to serve better for
society. Understanding traffic behavior requires a thorough knowledge of traffic stream
parameters and their mutual relationships.
4. Bridge is a structure corresponding to the heaviest responsibility in carrying a free flow of
transport and is the most significant component of a transportation system in case of
communication over gaps for whatever reason such as aquatic obstacles, valleys and
gorges etc. The student will be interested to know the different types of bridges,
substructure, superstructure and foundations.
5. Now days tunnels are effectively used for transportation of water, road and rail transport.
In this aspect, student will be interested to know construction, drainage and ventilation of
tunnels
Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the students should be able to:
C321.1 Discretize simple structures, identify static and kinematic degrees of freedom
C321.2 Analyze beams, trusses and frames by applying various methods of force
method of analysis such as Method of consistent deformation, Flexibility
method etc.
C321.3 Analyze beams, trusses and frames by applying various methods of
Displacement method of analysis such as Moment distribution method,
Stiffness method etc.
C321.4 Analyze the structures by energy methods using Castigliano’s theorem
C321.5 Select and use appropriate application application software for structural
analysis.
Justifications:
1) This course covers two main approaches of structural analysis one is Force
method and second one is displacement method. The suitability of these methods
need to be understood by the students by exercising on variety of inderminate
structures with complex loading and support conditions. For analysis of
indeterminate structure, the knowledge of determinate structural analysis is
essential. Thus high weight (10, 11) are given for PO 1 (knowledge) and PO 2
(Problem analysis) respectively.
2) The analysis of inderminate structure is based on the Degree of static
indeterminacy ( DSI) and Degree of Kinematic indeterminacy ( DKI). These
gives us an idea about the complexities in the problem. Thus evaluation of DSI
and DKI are the most fundamental part in the analysis of indeterminate structure
thus the moderate weight (6) is given to PO 4 (investigate).
3) The displacement method is more prone for computer programming and thus
majority of structural software are based on the displacement methods. Students
shall practice this software. for the analysis of primary level problems to make
them conversant with these software. Accordingly less weight (3) is given to PO
5 (Tool)
C322 GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING –II
Justification
1) This course primarily covers the field application of Geotechnical Engineering. These
covers evaluation of bearing capacity, suitability of different types of foundations, slope
stability, ground improvement etc. All these requires the site investigation (Problem
identification), Selection of appropriate method/ theory for the analysis and further
designing. Therefore in this course high weights are given (12,13,9) for PO
1(knowledge), PO 2 (Problem analysis) and PO 3 (Design) respectively.
2) Field tests are useful to evaluate the insitu properties of soil. The estimation of bearing
capacity will be more realistic if it is based on the field test. Thus students shall be able
to perform the field test with proper understanding of set up on site and the concerned
tools such as data acquisition system, application software etc. Thus a moderate weight
(4) is given to PO 5 (Tools).
Justification:
1. Course outcome of sewage collection is dealing with the sewage generation, sewage
collection, sewage disposal these operations are very important in environment and society
point of view so that this outcome is considered for program outcomes.
2. Course outcome of wastewater units is dealing with deign of various wastewater treatment
units such as activated sludge process, settling tank, trickling filter etc. Problem analysis of
various treatment units is very important in concept point of view. So this is considered as one
of the program outcome. The course outcome of design unit operation is practiced in form of
various wastewater treatment projects which involve designing and applicability various
projects can also be done for effective treatment.
3. Course outcome of Low cost waste treatment of water contribute to the program outcome of
knowledge to a very large extent as low cost treatment is important. Different projects can be
done on low cost waste treatments.
4. The course outcome of solid waste disposal and air pollution contains various concepts,
knowledge related to various disposal methods of solid waste and also controlling air
pollution so this is considered as one of the project outcome.
Justification:
The course deals with function of management which helps for the planning, scheduling
and budgeting of a project using the knowledge, tools and technique.
For successful completion of the project there is need of review and update of all planned
and scheduled activity which are done by effective tools and technique.
The fundamental engineering economics and project appraisal helps to make and
demonstrate decision making which economical, environmental, social and ethical
aspects.
The life cycle costing and value engineering study of project which has economical and
social aspects.
The project management software and tools used for planning, scheduling, tracking and
report generation helps for the achieving the mile stone of project.
Justification:
1. It is very important for tracks to have proper geometric design in order to ensure the safe and
smooth running of trains at maximum permissible speeds, carrying the heaviest axle loads.
The knowledge of RDSO railway codes, investigations of materials property such as strength
parameters of aggregates and soil is necessary for design and analysis of railway track. The
course being more associated with geometric design and runway design, the student can able
to use modern software and design the geometry of railway and runway.
2. Airport Engineering encompasses the planning, design, and construction of terminals,
runways, taxiways and navigation aids to provide for safe passenger and freight movement.
In this regard, materials investigations with modern tools, knowledge on International Civil
Aviation organization (ICAO) codes, study of terminals, wind direction, deciding the length
of runway, taxiway and operating the air traffic will be major criteria for safe movement.
While deciding the location of airport it is necessary to keep the impact on society and
environment and to collect all this data proper communication and team work plays
important role.
3. The course deals with planning and design of various components of railway, airport and
harbours. Hence it is essentially requires surveys and investigations with modern tools and
equipments which covers traffic survey, material investigations, finding the ideal alignment
with aerial or remote sensing photographs. During surveys, graduate will be to learn on
team work and good communication. The MxRail software will help in designing the
alignment and geometry of railway track.
Justification:
1. Calculation of stresses in Flexible and Rigid pavements requires knowledge of layer
concept and analysis of stresses in rigid pavement due to wheel load and temperature
using Westergaard’s approach.
2. The design of flexible and rigid pavements involves the interplay of several field data,
such as, the wheel loads, traffic climate, terrain and subgrade conditions. Appropriate
guidelines such as IRC, CBR, and AASHTO will be chosen for optimum pavement
design.
3. A road pavement consists of multiple layers made of materials that may be different in
nature and strength. These materials act together as one in order to achieve their
purpose, hence the need of through investigations in necessary in pavement design.
4. The purpose of the distress surveys is to identify and quantify the amount and severity
of surface distress in a given type of pavement with modern tools. The results of the
distress survey are used along with other measured pavement characteristics to
establish a condition rating for the roadway segment.

C411. DESIGN OF CONCRETE STRUCTURES – I
Justification:
1) The course deals with Design and Investigation . Hence POs 3 and PSOs 1 get higher
weighs.
2) Fundamental knowledge , investigation, Tools, Communication, ethics and Software are
necessary for design of RCC elements. Hence Pos 1,4,5 , 8,10 and PSOs 2,3 gets
medium weighs.
3) Sometimes in RCC design we perform analysis and investigation. Hence POs 2 contains
low weighs.
C 416 Seminar
Justification:
1. The course deals with Design, tools, Ethics . Hence Pos 3,5,8 and PSOs 1,2 contains higher
weighs.
2. Fundamental Knowledge, Problem analysis, Investigation, Communication and use of
Software for designing of RCC elements( Prestress and Post tensioning) is necessary.
Hence Pos 1,4,10 and PSOs 3 get medium weighs.
3. Sometimes it is necessary to carry out analysis. Hence Pos 2 it weighs low.
Justification:
5. The course outcome deals with various traffic studies such as Traffic volume count survey,
parking survey accident studies etc. It requires knowledge on conducting the surveys,
technical team and modern equipment’s and software’s for data analysis. On the basis of
the analysis and interpretation various traffic improvement proposals are arrived.
6. The analysis of relationship between flow, density, and speed is necessary to arrive, the
speed regulations, deciding road capacity, widening proposals and to decide the level of
service.
7. Traffic control devices, such as signs, pavement markings, and traffic signals, are used to
regulate, warn and guide traffic movements on public roadways. Hence it is required to
know the various traffic control devices and their installation and applications in regulating
the traffic movement smoothly. While deciding the traffic control device, it is necessary to
keep the some of the factors such as, the purpose served to society, sustainability under
different weather conditions and response of people.
8. Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) describe technology applied to transport and
infrastructure to transfer information between systems for improved safety, productivity
and environmental performance. This includes stand-alone applications such as traffic
management systems, information and warning systems installed in individual vehicles, as
well as cooperative ITS (C-ITS) applications involving vehicle to infrastructure and
vehicle-to-vehicle communications.
9. The course outcome includes demonstration of different advance traffic control
equipment’s and their applications in various locations such as urban and rural areas also
at Toll Plaza locations.
