FREEDOM
- is a necessary component of human existence at all levels of morality.
- It is, however, more than just doing what we want without hindrance,
coercion or restraint but moral freedom
- Moral freedom is not the right to do what you want but rather the
strength to do what is right.

RESPONSIBILITY
- Is accountability for the task or duty that we are required or expected to
do.
- According to Elbert Hubbart (1856-1915), responsibility is the price of
freedom and freedom cannot be separated from responsibility.
- This is the reason why we would sometimes refuse to make the choice

Activity #3

Directions: Share your thoughts about freedom and responsibility in the

following situations:

1. Sarah loves dogs, especially the small, cute ones. But she refrains
from getting one as a pet. Why is this?

Answer:
I think Sarah is really a dog lover but there are a number of reasons why she keeps
refraining herself to get even a small cute one dog. It might be, Sarah’s home is rented
and the owner doesn’t allow pets. Maybe like me Sarah suffering from allergy or Sarah’s
family members are allergic to dogs. Or Sarah lives alone and too busy working a day
and the dog would be lonely. Taking a dog would be costly and Sarah doesn’t have any
idea how to take care of it.

2. George is going to graduate from senior high school soon but does not
yet know what to do afterwards. Is he going to college or go looking?
for a job? Unable to decide, he let his parents make the decision for
him. Why?

Answer:
Going to college, getting a job, or taking time off are common choices that high school
students face. I know students like George find themselves in a tough situation to take a
right call because this is a crucial choice that will help mend our future. We all know that
parents have an important role in deciding their child’s future. George asked for his
parent’s decision and advice, it is simply because George wants to clarify his dreams
with his parents and in real life, choosing what career or path we want in the future
depends upon us. Parents shouldn’t play a decisive role but an active and supportive
role. Cooperation of George’s parents will yield greater results for their child’s future.

3. Bea loves art. She’s great at drawing and painting. She, however,
keeps her talents to herself that not even her parents know about her
ability. Why is she doing this?

Answer:
There are several reasons why Bea doesn’t want to show her talent to the people
surrounding her. It is because Bea doesn’t appreciate her talent in arts, she does not
want to be judged by others or maybe she lacks courage and that is holding her back.
Bea thinks that her drawing and painting are not special and worth sharing with others.
If an artistic person like Bea is being downvoted by other people when she shares her
ideas towards the painting, it is unlikely that her talent will be shown again.

4. Aling Cora had always known that her neighbor’s son is selling drugs
to students of a nearby school but does not do anything about it. Why?

Answer:
I was in a similar situation before but it was a very different experience to Aling Cora’s.
In my opinion, maybe Aling Cora is scared of telling the barangay police officer and
Aling Cora has a good relationship with the neighbor, very close to them. Or Aling Cora
doesn’t want to get involved with the issue. For me if I were placed in the situation of
Aling Cora I should ask her mother without judgment or I will talk to my neighbor’s son if
everything is going ok at school, I will ask him if he has financial problems that's
bothering him that he needs to talk about. I will let him know he can tell me anything,
that I am not going to punish him but I need to know what's going on with him. If he tells
me about the drugs, or I find the evidence to expose to him, I should address it calmly.
Just don't call the barangay police officer on him because it will scare him, yell at him, or
hit him. I will explain to him why he sells drugs, ask him where he got them from. Since
I’m older than him, I will try simply having a heart-to-heart conversation with him.

5. Teacher Liz failed Paolo in Math, primarily because he was always

absent and did not submit any of the subject requirements. After the
grades were submitted, she was surprised to see Paolo’s mother
smiling after leaving the principal’s office. Suspicious, she checked the
grades again and discovered that it was changed by the principal to a
passing grade. Though angry and insulted, she kept quiet. Why?

Answer:
If you will complain about what happened it would be problematic between you as a
teacher and with the principal. Just ask the principal professionally why he passed her
student Paolo and just have a good conversation and tell the principal all your evidence
that Paolo has poor performance in your class. For me to settle the issue with Paolo’s
parents. I will never try to have a heated argument with Paulo’s mother. I will just talk to
her calmly and logically.
