Ideology
SUSTAINABILITY:
1. Preserving the existing sitescape and resources available on the site
2. Efficient ways of incorporating daylight in the interior spaces
3. Sustainable Material usage and construction techniques that is cost effective
4. Water management
5. Sustainable roofing techniques
6. Façade design
7. Rainwater catchment pit
8. Bio gas plant

1. PRESERVING THE EXISTING SITESCAPE:

The site chosen in Perungudi has a very gentle slope with minor rises.
Existing trees are wild which can be preserved as a part of design. The site
is also covered with wild growing bushes and shrubs which can be
uprooted for construction and sanitary reasons.

TYPE OF TREE DIAMETER HEIGHT AGE OF TREE

Neem tree 0.5 9 20 yrs

Peepal tree 1 15 40 yrs

Mango tree 0.4 8 16 yrs

Other small trees 0.2 5 8 yrs

2. MATERIAL USAGE AND CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY:

Compressed stabilized earth blocks (CSEB) commonly called as Pressed earth blocks
are made from damp soil under very high pressure.
• Sound absorbent properties
• Cost effective
• Helps in maintaining optimum temperature
The use of glazed surfaces will help not only in providing daylight but also in
supervising the activities of animals.
Metallic cages for birds and small animals shall be of stainless steel or any other non
rustable material with high wear and tear characteristics.
The steel truss roofing system is also light in weight making them easier and quicker to
install and transport.

3. INCORPORATING DAYLIGHT IN INTERIOR SPACES:

The usage of skylights and courtyards wherever possible will help in bringing in natural
daylight to the place.
Clerestory windows provides ventilation, light and air to the space,
The varied sizes of the courtyards provided compliments the shelter and other spaces
not only aesthetically but also functionally.
4. WATER MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES:
Terrace gardens play an important role in rain water harvesting by acting as
catchment areas absorbing the incident rain and channelling it through pipes
to the ground water table.
Green terrace tops with plants and flowers grant comparatively cool spaces,
energy conservation, best quality air, healthy life and good bio diversity.
It provides an opportunity for people to interact more and has proven
psychological benefits.
The rain water can also be made to flow to the catchment pond

5. SUSTAINABLE ROOF:
A green roof or a living roof which is completely or partially covered with
vegetation and a growing medium has several purposes for the building.
It provides insulation and creates a natural habitat for wildlife, increases the
benevolence and decreases stress of people.
It also helps in lowering urban air temperatures and mitigate the heat island
effect.
Solar panels or photovoltaic shingles helps in producing electricity.
Its energy can be used for low-power purpose as well as larger ones and they
are long lasting.
6. RAINWATER CATCHMENT PIT:

The rain water caught in the catchment ponds not only conserves surface
water but also helps to recharge the aquifers as it slowly percolates into the
ground.

7. BIOGAS PLANT:

A biogas plant is an anaerobic digestor that treats wastes or energy crops.

During the process the micro organisms transform the biomass waste into biogas
and digested.
It can be used for any heating purpose, such as cooking.
Biogas burns very cleanly, and produces fewer pollutants during cooking than any
other fuel except electricity. Biogas provides instant heat upon ignition, no pre-
heating or waiting time is required. ... Biogas can be used for lighting as well.
