CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This chapter discuss of persuasive speech. The situation of this chapter will

explains more deeply and more focus to make easy the reader understand how to

fix the problem. This chapter consists of some sections. They are background of

the research, setting of the research, limitation of the research, formulation of the

research, purpose of the research, significance of the research, and definition of

the key terms.

A. Background of the Research

Nowadays, many people learn English for various purposes, both for career

and school. Many people realize that English is one of international language is

used throughout the world. English is an important communication tool.

Especially in education levels, English is taught at all levels, from elementary

school, junior high school, senior high school, and also university. In learning

English, we recognize four skills, speaking, witing, listening and reading. These

skills are important to be learnt and carry out own purpose.

Speaking is one of the basic language skills that must be mastered by

students. Speaking is used to express of the needs–request, information, service,

etc. Harmer (2007,p. 95) says that : If the students want to speak English fluently,

they need to be able pronounce phonems, use appropriate stress and intonation

and also speak in connected speech. Antoni (2012) States that speaking is one of

important elements in studying English. In speaking there are some components

derived from definitions above, they are; fluency, grammar, vocabulary, accent,

1
and pronunciation. Meanwhile, Long and Jack (1987) state that speaking is a set

of abilities that includes many components such as pronunciation, listening, and

grammar skills. Speaking is one of the central elements of communication.

Speaking is a productive skill that can be observed directly and empirically. The

observation is collected by accuracy and effectiveness of listening skill (Brown ,

2004) . It means that between speaking and listening are related. Speaking is

students‟ skill to communicate spoken language interpersonally, select the best

expression that relates to the context of spoken language, and be able to show

feeling and ideas (Niati, 2014). Moreover, Speaking is the active use of language

to express meanings so that other people can make undestand of them

(Cameron,2004, p. 95). In short, speaking defined as a delivery process of

language which is consist of pronunctiation, listenig, and grammar skill to express

and respond the information.

In speaking ability, Speech is speaking style that is often used from the past

until nowadays. There are some kinds of speech , one of them is persuasive

speech. persuasive speech is aim to persuade, convince and influencing listeners

through action. Another opinion said by Rakhmat (2012,p. 98) that persuasion

speech consist of three basis factor, they are attention getter, persuasive, and

create an action. Persuasive speeches aimed to influence the, attitudes, values,

beliefs, and acts of others (O‟Hair & Stewart ,1999,p. 3 ). Unlike an informative

speech, where the speaker is charged with making some information known to an

audience, in a persuasive speech the speaker attempts to influence people to think

or behave in a particular way.

2

researcher will limit them on an analysis persuasive speech for the third semester

students of English study program University Of Pasir Pengaraian. There are

some problems faced by the students related to the problem of speaking because

there are many fields in speaking they need to be mastered in order to be good in

English skill. This research is limited to the skill in persuasive speech of the third

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

The review of related literatures are very important to discussed. The

researcher is interesting to explain in the theory to make it clear in the

persuasive speech. In this chapter, the researcher would like to put the theories

from some experts that support this research. Those are about the nature of

speech, types of speech, and persuasive speech. This chapter also discusses

review of related findings and conceptual framework.

A. Review of Related Theories

a. The Nature of Speech

Speech is one of speech‟s style that is often used from the past until

nowadays (Arsjad and Mukti, 1993,p. 53). According to Oxford Dictionary

(2008),speech is the formal talk given to an audience. Speech is a result of the

following physiological processes: respiration, phonation, resonance,

articulation, and emotional behavior (Muchtar & Habar ,2018, p. 1 ). Then ,

Spratt (2005 ) state that speech is used in speaking to express meanings to the

other people. In short, speech is utterance or a talk given to audience and it

belongs to elements of speaking skill. In delivering Speech , it have to have a

goal , and one of them is persuasive (Arsjad and Mukti , 1993, p. 53).

Persuasive means that speaker requires an action or physical reaction from the

audiences. Ratna (2017, p. 12) also add that there are three purposes in

delivering speech: Informative (to inform), Persuasive (to persuade)

,Recreative (to entertain). Another opinion about speech is also said by Julijanti

7
and Quraisyin (2012,p. 23) that speech is an speaking activity in public to

deliver idea, thinking ,or information ,and also speaker‟ intention to audiences

directly. Meanwhile, A good speech continuously has three particular parts: an

introduction, the body, and a conclusion (Rahayu , 2015,p. 56 ). Based on the

explanation above, it can be concluded that speech is action of speaking ability

that has significant purpose to express the ideas for audiences.

b. Types of Speech

Knowing the topic of speech will help the speakers to prepare their

speech performance. The speaker have to know what the each

characteristics of speech. There are expert stated that speech divided into

some types. First opinion is stated by Telg (2011, p. 2),he says speech

divided into three types :

1) Informative speech is carried out if someone wants to give or

impart knowledge explain a process , and interpreting an agreement or

whatever describe an article. There are many topics in delivering

informative speaking for examples : a teacher telling students about

earthquakes, a student talking about her research, a travelogue about the

Tower of London, and a computer programmer speaking about new

software

2) Persuasive speech is aimed to persuade, convince, and influencing

listeners through actions. There are topic in delivering persuasive speaking

for examples become an organ donor, improve your health through better

8
eating, and television violence is negatively influencing our children.

3) Speeches for special occasions means that speech based on the

occasion (situation). This speech is purposed for specific occasion, speech

can be informative and persuasive depending on the occasion. Two of

more common types of this speech is spech of introduction and speech of

welcome. Speech of introduction is speech that consist of biographical of

speaker. Then, speech of welcome is aimed to make the person or group

feel welcome .

Based on the explanation above, speech divided into three types, they

are informative speech, persuasive speech , and speech for special

occasions. Each of those speech have the different characteristics.

Meanwhile ,Tarigan (2018,p. 30 ) states that there are four kinds of

speech based on delivery‟ method :

1) Impromptu speech

This speech is usually delivered on official events. It is delivered

without preparation and not using the script. This speech also often found

in teaching and learning. For example, if called on to speak in class, a

student might give a short impromptu speech about a topic that is in the

assigned readings.

2) Manuscript speech

This speech use the script. The speaker reads script from start to

finish. Script in this term is the written text which is made by speaker

before delivering speech. So,the speaker read to the script . Type of this

9
speech can be seen on the president deliver a state of the union message

and it can be seen that a well-crafted speech being read.

3) Memory speech

This speech usually written as well as later in delivery , be

remembered word for word, preparatory steps required more focused on

trying to remember the content of the speech message, at beside

manuscript preparation with good. This speech can be seen on speech

competition which the competitors deliver their speech by memorizing the

script.

4) Extemporaneous speech

The extemporaneous speech involves the speaker's use of notes and

some embellishment to deliver a speech. Some speakers use a manuscript

speech. This is a delivery where the speaker reads every word from a pre-

written speech. The differences between manuscript and extemporaneous

is the product as a content of speech. for example, a speaker delivers

speech about socialization or promote a product.

In addition, Sulistyarini and Zainal (2020, p. 115) in their book

entitled “Buku Ajar Retorika” said that there are three types of

speech,they are informative speech,persuasive speech,and recreative

speech :

1. Informative Speech aims to deliver information. Audiences are

expected to understand, know, and accept the information. The audiences

10
expected to understand and accept the information. Informative speech

attempts to deliver information which is logical, sistematic , and clear. It is

caused the audiences can not understand of message abstract.

2. Persuasive Speech aims to persuade audience‟s behavior,

opinion, and attitudes. It is not easy to persuade the audiences because of

some factor . The first factor is the selective audiences. Selective means

that the audiences have to select who the speaker is .The other difficult

factors for instance noise factor, interest, motivation, and also prejudice.

3. Recreative Speech belongs to a facile speech because it do not has

a specific purpose like informative and persuasive speech. But , this

speech also need speaking skill because it having the characteristic of

entertaining or amusing. A speaker have to have speaking ability and

intelligence so that the audience can be entertained by the speech.

The other opinion about types of speech is stated in a book entitled “Can I

Be A Public Speaker ?” (Mufanti, et al, 2017, p. 15 ) :

1. Narrative Speech

Narrative speech is a speech telling a story. According to the book

“Can I Be A Public Speaker ?”,narrative speech aims to entertain or

amusing. It is used to tell story ,often one that is based on personal

experience . Some example of narrative speech For instance funny

story,drama story, legend story,and other.

11
2. Informative Speech

Informative speech aims to educate the audience . According to

the book “Can I Be A Public Speaker ?”, informative speech aims to

inform the audience about knowledge. this speech having the characteristic

of educating. In delivering persuasive speech, it is helpful for the speaker

to know what the speaker already know about the speech content or they

need to know.

3. Demonstrative Speech

According to the book “Can I Be A Public Speaker ?”, this speech

having the character of showing how something is work.

Furthermore, demonstrative speech defined as a teaching method used in

teaching and learning process to show new something. For example, a

sales try to show how the phone is work.

4. Persuasive Speech

The goal of persuasive speech is to persuade the audience.According to

the book “Can I Be A Public Speaker ?”,persuasive speech is a speech

which is hardest in speaking because the speaker attempts to persuade and

to change the audiences‟ mind or behaviour. In this book also said that

persuasive speech can be support by the real example, evidences, and real

data.

Based on the explanation above, it can be concluded that there are

several types of speech. There are many expert that state about types of

speech with each of the characteristics. There are speech divided based on

12
the delivery method,content, or purpose.

c. Persuasive speech

1. Definition of Persuasive Speech

Persuasive speech is a speech aimed to persuade the audience to take

action. According to Rahardi (2005,p. 3) persuasive speech is a

conversation that aims to persuade someone to do action or change the

attitudes based on the desire of speaker. Persuasion speech is a skill related

to attracting, offering, ad influencing someone who is indispensable in the

world of work, both in bussiness and education (Rakhmat , 2012,p. 96).

Moreover , Keraf (2007,p. 73) states that persuasive is a verbal art that

aims to invite someone to do what the speaker want. Effective persuasion

involves four distinct and essential steps (Conger , 1998,p. 778). First,

effective persuaders establish credibility. Second, they frame their goals in

a way that identifies common ground with those they intend to persuade.

Third, they reinforce their positions using vivid language and compelling

evidence. And fourth, they connect emotionally with their audience .

Based on the explanation above, the researcher concludes that

persuasive speech is the process of creating , reinforcing , or changing

peoples' beliefs , attitudes or actions . It is also the art of convincing an

audience , listeners, to believe , think , or act as the speaker or writer wants

them to.

2. Aspects in persuasive speech

There are aspect which is discussed in persuasive speech, start from

13
elements, characteristics, until the indicators of persuasive speech. Wood

(2009) says in her book that persuasive speech contains of three main

basis:

a) Interactive means that there is engagement between speaker and

listener. Although the speaker is public figure, audiences have a big

role play. In addition, speakers have to consider the experience with

their audience when they deliver a persuaisve speech.

b) No coercive means that there is no coercing thing in persuasive

speech. Definition of persuasive speech is to persuade or convince.

But, it does not mean that the speaker forces the audience with

impoliteness. Persuasive speech delivered by motivational words so

that the audiences can be motivated with the speaker saying.

c) Gradual effect means that people move gradually toward new ideas,

attitudes, and actions although people‟s positions occasionally change

abruptly. When we hear a persuasive speech, we compare its

arguments with our experience and knowledge. If the speaker offers

strong arguments, good evidence, and coherent organization, people

may shift the attitudes or behaviors .

Based on the explanation above, it can be concluded that persuasive speech

is different from other speeches. It can be seen in speaker‟ competence to argue in

so that audiences can believe what the speaker say. The speaker also have to have

the abilities to interact with audiences.

14
Aristotle (2014, p. 3) states that there are three main methods of persuasion :

a. Ethos

Ethos means the speaker should show his knowledge, virtue, ability,

honor, and other factors to gain the psychological recognition and trust of

the audience. In short, ethos is a credibilty of the speaker. Credibility

implied as how the audiences‟ perception of how the speaker is

truthworthy.

b. Pathos

Pathos means the speakers must arouse the emotions of the audience

and display more emotional factors. In short , pathos is the emotional

appeal or ability to create connection between the speaker and his audience

c. Logos

Logos means the speaker is supposed to use logical discourse that can

stand up to logical scrutiny so as to convince others. In short, logos is the

logic behind any conclusion drawn by a speaker.

In persuasive speech,There are important elements that must be considered

in delivering a good persuasive speech . Schreiber,et al (2012, p. 12) say that

there are eleven elements for persuasive speech :

1. Introduction

There are many speaker ignore the technique of introduction. It sounds

insignificant. Meanwhile, a good introduction can be impact to the speaker‟

15
speech. it can be done by introducing to the topic. Then, speaker has to state

the topic clearly . so, the audiences can understand what the speaker want to

deliver.

2. Topic

Topic is the important thing in speech. it is caused the topic can impact

to the audiences‟ attention. Speakers have to choose the appropiate topic .

Topic must be clear and worthwhile . In addition, topic has to present a new

information. There are many speakers can not adapt the topic with the

audiences . it is better if the topic can engage the audiences .

3. Supporting materials

Supporting materials in persuasive speech means that speakers have to

use something to support their speech. It can be done by using quotes. In

addition, using quotes can be interested the audiences . But, the speaker must

be careful in quoting. All of sources must be clear and responsible. So, the

audiences can believe truthfull to the speaker.

4. Word selection

Selecting word belongs to the importan thing in delivering speech. For

example, if the speaker use low vocabulary, the audiences get difficulties in

understanding the speech. The vocabulary is needed to communicate with

others (Jannah, 2020,p. 79) . All that word used to support ideas, elements

regionalism is completely invisible . Word selection must be clear, precise, and

various.

16
5. Expression

There are people who consider expression is the similar thing with

gestures. Meanwhile, they are different. Expression is a facial appearance to

express emotion. In delivering speech, a speaker has to have the abiities to use

appropriate expression. It will be supporting in speech. For example, when the

speaker deliver speech about struggles, the expression must be assertive.

6. Gesture

Gesture is a motion of the body. Gesture is used for emphasizing the

speech. For example is the hand. The hand is a very expressive organ. It is used

to support our speech style. The speech will be more awkward if the speaker is

stiff, without gesture.

7. Interactive

As the elements of persuasive speech, interactive is also an important

point in assessing persuasive speech. Interactive in this case means that there is

a necessity of interaction between speaker and audience. This often happens in

the delivering speech, the speaker seems to read the text even though he doesn't

bring any text. The speaker only focus on what he wants to say, regardless of

how the audience responds. This will be a monotonous speech. So, a good

speech, especially persuasive, there must be interactive between speaker and

audiences.

8. Visual aids

Visual aids is the supporting tools in delivering speech. A good

persuasive speaker not only have the speaking ability, but also have to have

17
ability in using visual aids. There are many benefits from using visual aids

such as make speech is more interesting. In addition, it can improve speaker‟s

credibility because it will help the audiences believe to the facts in detail.

9. Credibility

Credibility is not natural character of the speaker. But, it is audiences‟

perception about the speaker. Credibility can be established by some points

(Rakhmat , 2012,p. 73). First, tell who the speaker is . Second, it is good sense .

Third, speakers have to have good characters. Fourt, telling to the audiences

why the speaker deliver speech to them. Fifth, good technique in delivering

speech.

10. Organization

In delivering speech, organization is important thing . Audiences can

understand very well about the speech. for example, after stating the topic,

speaker has to explain the background of the topic. But, there are many

speakers who do not understand yet about it. They are usually going to the next

discussion so that the speech will be disordered.

11. Conclusion

Besides the introduction, stating the conclusion clearly can impact to

the clarity of speech. There are many speakers who do not reinforce their

speech. it is important for audiences to comprehend the main points of speech.

concluding is not the difficult thing in speech. It can be done by restating the

main points of speech.

18
Meanwhile, other opinion is also stated by Rukiati (2015, p. 8) which there

are nine criterias in delivering persuasive speech:

1. Attention Getter is where the speakers need to orient the audience

and make connections between what they kmow already interested in and

the speech topic (Yuli, 2016,p. 7) . It can be done by giving quotation. A

good quote by a known author also will enhance your credibility.

2. Thesis Statement,This point states the topic and the point you are

trying to make about that topic. A well- thesis statement consist of some

points ; 1) makes an argument and 2) is a statement, not a question. A

thesis is usually (but not always) stated in one sentence.

3. Organization in speech serves two functions. They are to help

improve clarity in a sistematic way and increasing the effectiveness of

speech (Yuli, 2016, p. 8). Speech is organized by three main parts :

Introduction,body,and Conclusion.

4. Credibility has a same meaning as ethos (Rakhmat, 2012,p. 71).

Credibility can be established with your audience by mentioning your

expertise in the particular field which you are speaking. Credibility can

also refer to the reputation of the speaker. In short, credibility is how the

speaker give trust for the audience.

5. Eye Contact is a form of body language which is important during

communication. When the speakers keep eye contact with the person they

are talking to, it indicates that they are focused and paying attention. It

means that they are actually listening to what the person has to say.

19
6. Voice is important thing in speech. It's a good idea not to speak too

slowly. Speaking too slowly can be monotonous for your listeners, so they

may become impatient and just tune out.

7. Body Language is the combination of facial expressions, gestures,

and movements that convey what goes on in your mind. Body language is

reflective. The speaker never plan systematic of body language. For the

speaker, it is one of the important skill in showing body language.

8. Fluency defined that natural language use occuring when a speaker

engages meaningful interaction and maintains comprehensible and

ongoing communication despite limitations on his or her communicative

competence. In short , fluency is how the speaker use natural language and

communicating comprehensible.

9. Conclusion is essentially the final thought you want your audience

members to have when you stop speaking. It also provides a definitive

sense of closure to your speech. One of the authors of this text often makes

an analogy and the concluding device in a speech.

Then, Arsjad and Mukti (1993,p. 17) state that there are ten aspects in

delivering persuasive speech, they are :

1. Word Selection includes when the words are used appropriately,

all that word used to support ideas, elements regionalism is completely

invisible . Word selection must be clear, precise, and various. It is caused

the audiences will be interested if the speaker speaks fluently.

20
2. Language Structure involves the arrangement sentences, phrases,

and words so that information or message conveyed can be understood

very well. A good speaker has to have abilities in arranging of effective

sentences. As communication tool, the sentences included in deivering and

accepting.

3. Pronunctiation includes phonemes is clear and there is no effect of

the pronunciation of regional and foreign languages. Eripuddin and

Kasyulita (2019,p. 431) stated that Learner with good pronunciation in

English are more likely to be understood even if they have errors in other

place, whereas learners whose pronunciation is difficult to understand will

not be understood even if their grammar is good. A speaker must be clear

in pronounce the language. The bad pronunctiation will be effect for

audience. It will be monotonous speech.

4. Intonation occurs when the voice changes in pitch .A well-written

and well-spoken speech can do the same. Higher intonation is a way to

excite the audience, while slowing and lowering your tone will either end a

point or a speech.

5. Attitudes can influence effective communication both positively

and negatively. When attitudes are positive, there is an empathy that exists

between those conversing enough so that each side will strive to fully

understand what the other is saying in order to provide the best possible

response.

6. Area Controlling means that when the view the speaker spreads all

21
over room and take control of the situation. A speaker who can not control

the area also impact to audience. These are such as fatigued, awkward, and

not calm. So, a good speaker has to have abilities for controlling the area.

7. Mastering of Material includes the topics and descriptions

accordingly, deep, easy to understand, and the information submitted is

complete. It often found the speaker has not fluency in delivering material.

It will impact to the audiences in understanding the speech content .

8. Mimic involves when motion limb support talk and expression of

the speaker according to that information be delivered. Mimic can support

speech effectively. This can carry good communication.

9. Relevance means that when the speech is systematic, or completely

straightforward. Ideas ,step by step has to be related and logic. The first

idea until to the conclusion must be relevant.it means that every sentence

must be coherence and cohesion.

10. Ability to support opinion is the main point in speaking

skill, especially persuasive speech. In persuasive speech, there are many

evidences as supporting thesis statement. It means that when the speaker is

leads the listener's opinion clearly by using sentences which is persuasive

or inviting. Every sentences must be logic, unity, and clear. So,the

audiences will be easier to understand.

B. Review The Related Findings

First, Labrador,et al (2013) entitled “Rhetorical structure and persuasive

22
language in the subgenre of online advertisements”. This research aims to

reveal the rhetorical structure and the linguistic features of persuasive

language in online advertisements of electronic products. The result show that

online advertisements of electronic products may be regarded as a specific

with particular macro and microlinguistic characteristics, which have been

identified in this paper for technical writing assistance.

Second, Sahar Altikriti (2016) entitled “Persuasive Speech Acts in Barack

Obama’s Inaugural Speeches”. The aim of this research was to to shed light

and determine the role of this speech act in political addressees. Hence, this

study has examined and analyzed three selected political speeches of Obama

as pieces of discourse with specific aims and intentions based on the adopted

model of Bach and Harnish Taxonomy . Result have proven the important

role of persuasive speech acts in political addressees and its impact on the

audience‟ acts.

Third, Judith Peters and Marieke Hoetjes (2017) entitled “The effect of

gesture on persuasive speech” The aim of this research was to find out the

effect of gesture on persuasive speech. this research more focused on

peripheral cues, rather than the content of the message. The result Indicates

that except for one measure, The accompanying gestures make the speech

more convincing. In addition, there are some interactions that indicate

Speaker performance and accuracy of facts Speech scores are high, especially

for those who don‟t Only the gestures are seen, but the subject is not covered

speech.

23
Fourth ,the research conducted by Nurhidayatillah (2018) in her thesis

entitled “Persuasive Strategies Used in Hillary Clinton’s Political Campaign

Speech”. The aim of this thesis was to find out the kinds of persuasive

strategies used by hillary clinton‟s and her tendency in using persuasive

strategies in political campaign speech. The finding showed that Hillary

Clinton used several kinds of persuasive strategies to get support from the

audience or public and invest her idea in delivering her poitical campaign

speech.

Fifth, Siti Surinah Harahap, Rivi Antoni, Ummi Rasyidah (2015) in the

research entitled “An Analysis on Students' Speaking Skill at Second Grade

SMP 8 Rambah Hilir”. The purpose of this research was to find out students

speaking skill. Speaking is one of the some skills among writing, reading, and

listening. This research was descriptive qualitative research design. The

population of this research was about 21 students. Based on the result, it can

be concluded that the second grade students' of SMP 8 in Rambah Hilir

district year 2014/2015 in speaking were good in speaking skill. The result of

the analysis showed that 67% out of 21 students have good speaking ability,

33 % of 21 students had average to good speaking ability. No students were

in poor to average and poor level ability. The conclusion of the students'

speaking skill was good.

Based of the previous research, there were many researchers who used

persuasive strategies in their research. Here , the research only focused in

how the students‟ skill in delivering persuasive speech. The sample of this

24
research was university‟ students. The reason why this research was

conducted ,because speaking is very interesting to analyze, especially in

persuasive speech. Then, there were many students still have limited skill in

persuasive speech. Therefore, Researcher attempted to develope assesment

rubrics in persuasive speech so that the students can deliver persuasive speech

as possible.

C. Conceptual Framework

Conceptual framework is the concept that researcher use the plan of the

research. A conceptual framework is analytical tool with several variations

and context. It uses to make conceptual distinctions and organize ideas.

In the third semester of english study program, speaking belongs to the

main skill . Speech is one of the skill that must be mastered by students. One

of the speech is persuasive speech in speaking III subject. In delivering

speech , students still got difficulties . For example, they did not know

information about persuasive speech in detail. Then, many students still got

difficulties in vocabulary. Therefore, to solve this problem, the researcher

tried to use the scoring rubric in assessing their persuasive speech. Instrument

of this research was speaking test in persuasive speech. Then, students‟

persuasive speech would be analyzed by the scoring rubric. Scoring rubric

consist of criterias that can help the students to increase their ability in

speaking. Through the scoring rubric, the students can know how their

performance in persuasive speech. From the analysis, it would be found of the

findings and discussion in students‟ persuasive speech. Then, from the

analysis, it would be found the conclusion of the research.

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter explains the description of research methodology used in this

study. It is consist of the research design, setting of the research, instrumentation

of the research, procedure of the research, technique collecting the data, and

technique of analyzing the data. This chapter also discusses about the population

and sample of this research.

A. Research Design

This research is a descriptive quantitative research . According to

Sugiyono (2013,p. 2) state that research design is a scientific way to get data

with a specific purpose. Meanwhile, the model of research design used in this

reseach is quantitative. Creswell (2014) add that quantitative research is an

approach for testing objective theories by examining variables. These

variables, in turn, could be measured, typically on instruments, so that

numbered data could be analyzed using statistical procedures. The statistical

procedures will be described as the need of the research.

In this research, the main point was to collect and accumulate the data in

descriptive way . It intends to describe about the students skill in persausive

speech by third semester students English study program university of Pasir

Pengaraian.

B. Setting of the Research

This research would be conducted at third semester students of english

27
study program University of Pasir Pengaraian. It is located Rambah Hilir,

Rokan Hulu. The research was held from Desember 2020 to May 2021.

C. Population and Sample

According to Sugiyono (2013 ,p. 215) population is generalization region

that consist of object, subject that have and certain characteristic who

determined by researcher to be learned and to be concluded . The population of

this research was the third semester English Students University of Pasir

Pengaraian , academic year 2020/2021. There were 29 students and all of

students were population.

Based on the considerations above, the researcher used probability

sampling. According to Sugiyono (2013,p. 218) probability sampling is

sampling technique where the the number of samples is the same as the

population. The sample that should have been in this research were 29 samples.

So in this research, the amount of samples is the same as the population, they

were 29 person.

D. Instrumentation of the Research

The instrument of this research was speaking test. The test was given to

the students to deliver in persuasive speech. Then, students‟ speaking test was

analyzed by scoring rubric of persuasive speech. The scoring rubric was taken

from Hughes „s theory (2003,p. 113).

28
E. Technique of Collecting the Data

The test of this study was conducted at University Pasir Pengaraian, in

third semester students of English Study Program of Faculty of Teacher

Training and Education. This method was carried out by some steps:

1. The researcher gave the speaking test for students that consist of

instructions deliver persuasive speech

2. The students prepared one topic that they have Chosen.

3. After that, students delivered persuasive speech . The maximum time

given is seven minutes.

4. The researcher recorded the videos from the students.

F. Technique of Analyzing the Data

After collecting data , the researcher analyzed the data. The researcher

filled the scoring rubric which is contained some criterias based on the

teoritical of scoring rubric by Hughes (2003) . The data was analyzed by

using the following criteria :

Table 1. Scoring Rubric by Arthur Hughes (2003)

CHAPTER IV

FINDING AND DISCUSSION

This chapter discusses about the result of the research and analyzes the data

of the students‟ skill in persuasive speech. This chapter also consist of research

finding and discussion. In this chapter, the researcher explained the students‟ skill

in delivering persuasive speech. The researcher also listed table of the result to

ease the readers in catching point of this research. The elaboration of the

limitation of this research will be answered in the research finding then completed

in the discussion.

A. Research Finding

There were five aspects that must be scored in this research. They were

accent, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. The result were analyzed

in separate section in this chapter . But,the summary of the students‟ score of

delivering persuasive speech by three raters could seen in appendix.

a. Students’ Accent

The students‟ skill in terms of accent is shown in the following table :

Table 5. The analysis on the students’ accent

No Range Category Frequency Percentage
1 81-100 Excellent - -
2 61-80 Good 3 10,34 %
3 41-60 Average 23 79,31 %
4 21-40 Fair 3 10,34 %
5 0-20 Poor - -
Total 29 100 %

34
Based on the table 5, it can be seen that the students skill in accent have variety

level of frequency point because 3 student (10,34 %) were in good category . their

range between 61-80. It means that they had made no conspicuous

mispronunciation. The students had delivered speech in good, but they would not

be taken for a native speaker. This case can be seen when students delivered the

speech, they need more pace and clarity. The second, 23 students (79,31%) were

average in accent because they in range between 41-60. It means that they had

“Foreign accent” requires concentrated listening and mispronunciations lead to

occasional misunderstanding. This case can be seen in their pronunciation . For

example they said the word “prophet “, but they pronunce “propet”and it should

be pronunce “/ˈprɒfɪt/.” .The last, 3 students (10,34 %) are fair or they range

between 21-40, it means that they had frequent gross errors and every heavy

accent make understanding difficult, require frequent repetition. This case can be

seen when they say the word “about”,they pronunced “abot”,it should be

“/əˈbaʊt/”, the word “caused” was pronunced “kauset”,it should be “ /kɔːz/ ”.

Another case can be seen when they deliver speech, they say the word “eeeeee”

between the word . Based on the explanation above ,it can be concluded that most

students were in average level, a litle students had fair, and a litle students had

good level. Many students were wrong in their spoken or they did

mispronunciation.

b. Students’ Grammar

The students‟ skill in terms of accent is shown in the following table :

35
Table 6. The analysis on the students’ Grammar
No Range Category Frequency Percentage
1 81-100 Excellent 2 6,89 %
2 61-80 Good 12 41,37 %
3 41-60 Average 14 48,27 %
4 21-40 Fair 1 3,44 %
5 0-20 Poor - -
Total 29 100 %

Based on the table 5, it can be seen that there were 2 students (6,89 %) were

in excellent level because their range is in 81-100, it means that had made Few

errors, with no patterns of failure. 12 student (41,37 %) were in good because they

in range 61- 80, it is mean that they had imperfect control of some patterns but no

weaknesses that causes misunderstanding. And then, 14 students (48,27 %) were

in average because they in range 41-60, it means that they had made frequent

errors that showing some major patterns uncontrolled and misunderstanding . This

case can be seen in their tenses error, for example they made “...The internet has

become...”. This sentence should be “...The internet has became...”. Another case

can be seen at the sentence structure “...We all know when we are sick...” ,it

should be “...All of us know when we are sick...” . The last, there is 1 student

(3,44 %) were in fair because they in range 21-40, it means that they constant

errors showing control of very few major patterns and frequently preventing

communication .

Based on the explanation above, it can be concluded that the students in

grammar still in average level. The students were in average more than the good

36
and excellent because the students still low in grammar. They did a mistake when

they produce the sentence . They did not good use tenses and then they always did

mistake to put the structure in their sentence, they should prepare and correct their

script.

c. Students’ Vocabulary

The students‟ skill in terms of accent is shown in the following table :

Table 7. The analysis on the students’ Vocabulary

No Range Category Frequency Percentage
1 81-100 Excellent 13 44,82 %
2 61-80 Good 15 51,72 %
3 41-60 Average 1 3,44 %
4 21-40 Fair
5 0-20 Poor - -
Total 29 100 %

Based on the table 6, Most of students students are in good level. We can

see that there are some students in excellent level about 13 students (44,82 %)

between 81-100 or they had made Professional vocabulary broad and precise .

This case can be seen when the students delivered the speech about environment

protection , it was made supporting vocabulary such as the scope of cleanliness,

greening, and other varied vocabulary. There are 15 students (51,72 %) were in

good level between 61-80 . They had made general vocabulary permits

discussion. This case can be seen that the students have made vocabulary related

to the topic. For example, when the students delivered the speech about the

benefit of blood, so they made the general vocabularies of the topic. They are only

37
1 student (3,44%) were in average level. The student had limitations of

vocabulary prevent discussion of some social topic. It can be shown that the topics

presented did not cover the entire material, so the vocabulary only struggled in

one discussion and the vocabulary is not various. They should add their

vocabulary for mastery in their speaking skill. From the explanation above, the

students‟ vocabulary were in good level. There are students create professional

vocabulary adequate to discuss special interest; general vocabulary permits

discussion of any non-technical subject with some circumlocutions.

d. Students’ Fluency

The students‟ skill in terms of accent is shown in the following table :

Table 8. The analysis on the students’ Fluency

No Range Category Frequency Percentage
1 81-100 Excellent 1 3,44 %
2 61-80 Good 8 27,58 %
3 41-60 Average 11 37,93 %
4 21-40 Fair 9 31,03 %
5 0-20 Poor - -
Total 29 100 %

About 11 students (37,27%) were average. They had made speech that was

frequently hesitant and jerky, sentences may be left uncompleted . This case can

be seen when they delivered one sentence has not been completed, it will be

continued with another sentence. So, that it becomes ambiguous speech . The

table shows that 1 student (3,44 %) was excellent in fluency, or they had Speech

is effortless and smooth, but perceptively non-native in speed and evenness. In

38
this case ,they delivered speeches well and fluently, just not exactly like natives.

About 8 students (27,58 %) were good in fluency,or they had made speech is

occasionally hesitant, with some unevenness caused by rephrasing and grouping

for words. They delivered speeches by repetition a few words to sentences

frequently caused by nervous. The last 9 students (31,03 %) were in fair or they

had speech is very slow and uneven except for short routine sentences. In this

case, the students have the limited ideas and vocabulary, so the sentences are

simple and underdeveloped. In addition ,students spoken slowly ,they look like

remember their script and many students always silent for a moment, sometimes

they said “eee”. From the explanation above, the conclusion is students‟ skill in

fluency aspect were still average. The students were very slow in speech because

what the students deliver , it is still confuse and the students had limited idea to be

developed.

e. Students’ Comprehension

The students‟ skill in terms of accent was shown in the following table :

Table 9. The analysis on the students’ comprehension

No Range Category Frequency Percentage
1 81-100 Excellent 12 41,37 %
2 61-80 Good 15 51,72 %
3 41-60 Average 2 6,89 %
4 21-40 Fair -
5 0-20 Poor - -
Total 29 100 %

39
Based on the table above, 12 students ( 41,37 % ) were in excellent in

comprehending the topic or they understands everything in both formal and

colloquial speech to be expected of an educated native speaker. Secondly, there

are 15 students (51,72 %) were in good comprehend the topic or they understand

everything in normal educated conversation except for very colloquiarlor low

frequency items, or exceptionally rapid or slurred speech. The last, there are 2

students (6,89 %) were in average or they understanding careful, some what

simplified speech when engaged in a dialogue but may require considerable

repetition and rephrasing .This case can be shown when the students deliver

speeches, they avoid the dialogue or communication to the audience and they

repeat the sentences frequently. It was caused they did not comprehend deeply

about their material. Based on table analysis above,it can be concluded that the

students‟ level in comprehension aspect was good category. It is caused

understands everything in normal edu- cated Conversation except for

exceptionally rapid .

After explaining each of aspect in delivering persuasive speech, researcher

want to make conclusion of level from each aspects. The conclusion was
presented on the table below.
Table 10. The result of students’ speech by three raters
No Indicators Percentage Level
1 Accent 50,29 % Average
2 Grammar 59,08 % Average

40
Based on the table 10, it can be seen the percentage of each aspect .The data

collected from 29 students of third semester English Study Program university of

pasir pengaraian. The students‟ accent is 50,29 %, students‟ grammar is 59,08 %,

students‟ vocabulary is 79,66 %,students‟ fluency is 53,68, and students‟

comprehension is 79,44 %.

score, and 12 students were in average score . In conclusion, the table above

showed that the students skill in delivering persuasive speech was in good

category ( 64,43 %) .

42
Based on the data above, the researcher want make the data more clear with

make the table about the percentage of the result.

Total 29 100 %

From the data in the table of result the students in delivering persuasive

speech, the researcher concluded that the students' speaking skill in delivering

persuasive speech is in good category. There are 2 students got excellent category

( 6,89 %), there are 15 students got good category ( 51,72 %), and there are 12

students got average category ( 41,37 ).

B. Discussion

There were five aspect in assessing students‟ speech included

accent,grammar,vocabulary,fluency,and comprehension (Hughes :2003,p. 113).

From the research result, the researcher found that the students were in good level

in all of aspect. After getting the data, the researcher needed to discuss the

findings to answer the research question.

From the findings of the research, it concluded that students‟ skill in

persuasive speech at third semester students English study program university of

43
pasir pengaraian, the score 64,43 % that categorized in good level. The research

also found the result of each aspect. It was consist of

accent, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. The score of accent was

50,29 % that categorized in average level, grammar 59,08 % in average level ,

vocabulary 79,66 % in good level,fluency 53,68 % in average level, and

comprehension 79,44 % in good level.

The finding show that students‟ accent categorized in average level

(50,29%). they had “Foreign accent” , requires concentrated listening and

mispronunciations lead to occasional misunderstanding. This case could be seen

in the pronunctiation. The students were difficult to pronounce word in english.

This finding was supported by the theory of Ur (2000,p. 35 ) which pronuncing

the vocabulary is important things because it will be impossible to speak up

without various words.

The score of grammar was 59,08. This result showed that students‟

grammar were still in average. This finding was supported by the theory of Baker

and Westrup (2003,p. 36) stated that it is very difficult for learners to answer

when their teachers ask them to tell things in a foreign language because they

have little opinions about what to say, how to use grammar accurately.

The score of fluently was 53,68 % . It was in average level . The main aim

of English language teaching is to give learners the ability to use English language

effectively and correctly in communication (Davies & Pearse, 2000,p. 34).

However, it seems that language learners are not able to communicate fluently and

accurately because they do not have enough knowledge in this field. Many

44
students had made speech that was frequently hesitant and jerky, sentences may

be left uncompleted.

From the discussion above, the students still have difficulties in

accent, grammar, and fluency aspect. Most of the students were difficult in accent

aspect because the students had mispronunctiation or the students were difficult in

pronuncing word in english. Most of the students were difficult in grammar aspect

because the students had made frequent errors that showing some major patterns

uncontrolled and misunderstanding. Most of the students were difficult in fluency

because the students were not able to communicate fluently and accurately, they

do not have enough knowledge . However, students‟ skill in vocabulary and

comprehension aspect were in good category. It can be seen that the students‟

score were good in vocabulary and comprehension aspect . From the explanation

above, the researcher concluded that the students‟skill were good in delivering

persuasive speech.

C. Limitation of The Research

This research had been analyzed. Delivering persuasive speech in third

semester students of English Study Program in University of Pasir Pengaraian.

The findings were analyzed based on the theory of experts. However, since the

research was inaccessible, it became the limitation of this research.

This research actually focused in delivering persuasive speech. It meant

this research analyzed the students persuasive speech in indicators of speaking it

self that was explained by experts in previous chapter. This research conducted in

45
University of Pasir Pengarain, so the situation of students itself differ with other

universities or other places. Moreover , There were some problems faced by the

researcher during the research, such as limited theory by experts as the references,

limited time in collecting the data and analyzing the data and the researcher had

difficulty in collecting the data because the campus was used online and offline

learning system .

46

Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarokatu....First of all, let us give thanks to Allah SWT who give us bless
and opportunity to gathering here for speaking test and do not forget to send our prayers to the prophet
Muhammad SAW by saying Allah Hummasolialasayidina Muhammad wa ala ali Sayidina Muhammad. The
honorable ms pipit rahayu,M.Pd as the lecturer of speaking, the honorable sister wulan and sister yorin, and all
of my beloved friends. My name is Rosdiana Daulay. lam a student from english study program from university
of Pasirpengaraian. Today, In this ocasion i will talking about early marriage in indonesia. What do you think
about marriage which is eeeeee one of the most important events of each our life? Throughout the world,
marriage has always been regarded as eee the moment of the celebration and certainly is eeeeee milestone in the
adult's life but adversely there is no celebration eeeee on early marriages. In many countries, eeeee young
people between the Ages eeeee of seven and fifteen are often married to older by the force of their families and
customs in their village. What do you think about early marriage? It is a good or bad marriage ? Is early
marriage more better than marry when ...we are mature? Ithink no, marry eeeee when we are mature is the better
choice than early marriage because eeeee we would have eee enough ability to guarantee the financial for our
family, and eeee would help eeeee our have more time to understand ....our partners, and we would have more
experiences to build better relationship in our life. Based on eeeee Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS), ......out of
300,000 households in all provinces in Indonesia, the rate of eeeee early marriage in Indonesia in 2015 reached
eeeee 23%. Unfortunately, early marriage is still legal in Indonesia, the minimum age eeeee for marriage is 21
years, but girls can marry at 16 years and eee boys at 19 with the permission of their parents. According to
research from UNICEF, eeee there are many negative impacts caused by eeeee early marriage, namely: 1. Girls
aged 10-14 years are five times more likely to die during eeee pregnancy and childbirth eeee than eeee girls
aged 20-24 years....2.) 85% of girls end their education after marriage....3. eeeee Girls who marry early have
eeeee a high risk of experiencing anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts...4.) Child brides have a great
chance of experiencing physical, psychological, emotional, and social isolation violence...5.) Many early
marriages also eeee end in divorce, most young couples have no responsibility in a relationship. then who will
be the victims here? of course the child ren who will be victims. therefore I eeeee strongly discourage early
marriage. Eeeee don't marry when you want to but marry when you eeeee can afford it. don't get married
because you see your friend is married so you want to get married even though you are not ready. get married if
you are ready physically, mentally, financially, and eeeee mature enough to be responsible for yourfamily. I
think thats all about eeee my speech today, thank you for your attention...Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi

Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh...My name is Widya Andini. I am an english student trom

university of pasir pengaraian and i am from third semester. The honorable, Miss Pipit Rahayu, M.Pd, as a
lecture of Speaking subject. And my beloved, all of my friends. First of all, let's say all the praise and gratitude
to Allah Swt due to all of His blessing, mercy, and guidance upon all of us. Shalawat and salam may
everlastingly be upon our Great Prophet Muhammad Saw who have lead and guided us from dark into bright
path. Today i want to talk about bullying in my persuasive speech. Everyone has probably been bullied at least
once in their life. It's not the best feeling is it?eeeeeee It males one feel insecure, humilited and very
uncomfortable. It has the power to destroy live, mentally and physically. Bullying behaviour can be
communicated via text, mobil phone, the internet, social networking sites, forums and so on. Did you know that
around 4.400 people commit suicide in just the US, because of bullying? And that's only one year! Does this
sound like it's not a big deal to you? I didn't think so. But there are people out there who don't think bullying is
what made all those people commit suicide. They think they just gas mental problems, but i don't believe that.
Did you know? I am sorry eeeee Who do you think gets bullied more, high school boys or high school girls? If
you said girls, you were right. In 2009, a study by the eeeee Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
is one of major operating componen of Department of Health and Human Service found 20% all of high school
students reported bring bullied that previous years, and that girls were more likely to bullying victims. In short,
bullying needs to stop! Bullying eeeee a criminal act, bullies harass, make threats, terroze and use verbal and
physical abuse on their victims. We need to stand up to bullies..... and not let them strip uu of ourself-esteem.
Bullies must face the consequences of their actions with either therapy or some version of criminal punishment.
Maybe, if we take a group of bullies to visit a jail to show them how rough their life could turn out, they mau
rethink their behaviour. Oke this is the end of my persuasive speech, if I'm wrong in saying I'm sorry, be
yourself and love yourself. ...Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.

Good morning...The honorable Ms. Pipit Rahayu, M.Pd. as a lecturer of Speaking Subject ,the honorable sister
yorin and my beloved friends.First of all let us say thank to God for given us grace, guildance and the never
ending biessing to us. Secondly, let me introduce my self my name is Rutmaida Tambunan, I am an English
department from third semester. Ladies and gentlemen...On this occasion, I wouid like to tell you about my
speech is drugs. Drugs are a thorny issue in Indonesia, even the world. His presence concerns many people.
Drugs....The condition of the aircady Mired victims into the biack abuses is appailing. Drugs have damaged
many young souls whose journey was far off. The desicive act of disregarding it at ail is the only way to avoid
it. Ëven if we get within striking distance of it, we plunge into a black hole that will torment us both physically
and psychologically. How couid it not, once tried drugs it wouid haunt us every day.every hour, every
second!............... Drugs are addictive subtances which means our bodies will continue to feed when they have
tasted them. is not our bodies really want it, but it is drugs that manipulate our bodies to ask for it. It would be a
fool to continue inducing this dangerous drug even if the subtances contained within it actually destroy our
body. It does not stop there, it attacks us psychicaily. This means that our hearts will continue to be made uneasy
if we have not tasted them. Our heads will be covered by the darkness it causes. That we are even able shout at
or hurt someone we love. It is enough that 3 million people in Indonesia heve been trapped in mortal pleasure.
Yes, you are hearing correctly that 3 million people have continued to have been plunged into the black hole of
this unclean thing by data collected by BNN or National Narcoties Agency in 2019.......Ladies and
gentlemen........I therefore insist that you stay away from this unholy thing! it is not just a legal matter and even
a law is just a middleman. Drugs should be shunned because they are extremely destructive and they will
destroy your lite. I think that' s all my speech. I'm sorry for my mistakes, thank you see you....

subject an all of my beloved friend First of all, let's thanks to Allah SWT......Secondly sholawat and salam
always be our prophet Muhammad Saw by saying "allahumaSholial ashaidina Muhammad waalaali Syaidina
Muhammad" ......Today i would like to teli you about my speech "the importance of balanced food'"........Other
than consuming food three times a day, it is also important to take notes about the nutrition in your food. Having
enough or too much rice is not the sign that you have consumed enough food to stay healthy. Your daily food
should consists of all of the nutrition elements such as .....vitamins, carbohydrate, and protein. it is very common
to find people, especially Indonesians, who use rice as their standard of balanced food. It is often said that eating
with rice will feel like you have not eaten at all. However, this kind of tradition could be dangerous for future
generations. Nowadays,Not many people understand how important it is to maintain a balanced and healthy life.
However actually, in reality, everyone could have a healthier life by changing the small aspects of their
consumption. Even if the lower class might think that they don't have the privilege to buy healthy food, they
should understand that even in traditional markets, they could buy all of the balanced and healthy menu without
having to empty their pockets. I thinks that‟s all, thank you for your attention....Assalamualaikum

negative impact of game".....Ladies and gentlenmen ........Talking about the worid of gaming, especially oniine
games, of course, is a habit and lifestyle for some people in the world. everything in the world consists of
positive and negative things, as weli as online games. The negative impact game is that it damages the eyes and
mind, because most gamers often stay up late at night because of thinking about games or playing games, and
the perpetrators tend to not care about the social environment.......Even the impact ........of online games is not
minimai; Relationships........ with family and friends are strained by the time they spend away from each other.
Therefore I suggest more caution in choosing activities. How wise it wouid be to allow ourselves to become
more involved in something more positive when using the Internet. We should be more wise in using it and
more understanding of its meaning ....or value. Let us not forget everything because of a game. I think that's all,
I hope it's will be usefull for us. Thank you for your attention...Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarokatu

Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarokatu...First of all, lets pray and thanks to our God Allah SWT, who
has been gives us some mercies and blessing, so we can attend and gather in this place in good condition and
happy situation.eeeee the honorable Ms pipit, the honorable eeeeee sister yorin I also express my gratitude for
the opportunity given to me to deliver a speech regarding The Importance of Sports for Our Health as humans.
The actually, sports is a very useful activity. But sport is an activity that is very rarely done by busy people.
Even tought, So there are many benefits obtained from sports. one of them is the body to be healthy. Sport is a
series of activities that nourish the body. The reason is by exercising, we can eeeeee avoid disease. For example,
by swimming, sports that are carried out in the .........air are very useful for nourishing the health of the lungs in
breathing. In addition, all types of exercise can be healthy for the body. And there are many more sports that can
nourish our bodies. Lack of exercise can sleep due to insomnia or sleep disorders. Because, the body that rarely
moves....... stores a lot of energy .... Doing exercise can be beneficial for our health. By exercising eeeeeee
regularly, the body will be able to remove the toxins that exist and the body's eeeeeee metabolism will become
smoother. By doing sports as well, the organs in the body will be able to maximize its performance. By doing
so, your body will feel healthier and fitter. Every now and then a week I suggest eeeeee doing sports that you
like. such as basketball, vollybal, and many others. .....Nowadays, more and more people neglect to maintain a
healthy body. spending more time playing on cellphones, and eventually forgetting about sports. So, what can
we do to maintain health? One way is to do sports. So, it is true if health has an expensive price considering the
costs that must be incurred when sick to be able to return to health as usual. And also nowadays there are many
people who experience health problems due to lack of regular exercise and not eating healthy foods as a result of
which many people suffer from disease. so from now on,..Let us ...........be diligent eeeeee in exercising so that
the body becomes healthy and we avoid disease. start with exercise that is as light as we can. Therefore, let's
take the time to exercise so that our eeeeee bodies are clean and healthy.Better to prevent treatment. I have
enough speeches to say. Eeeeeee I apologize if my words are wrong and not pleasing to the audience. For the
attention of the audience, I say thank you very much...Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarokatuh.

class Survey everyone in this room has a call phone and all of us use it dozens of times every day, but what if
your constant companion is dangerous, what if it's hazardous to your health evidence is piling up that long-term
use of cell phones can lead to tissue damage tumors even brain cancer even brain cancer even that there are well
over 4 billion people worldwide using cell phone. Those risk stem from the fact, that cellphones emuit small
amounts of radiation, that over time can damage tissue, every time you use your Cell phone your expose
yourself to that radiation the amount is miniscule in Comparison to that given off by x-ray Machines about 11
billionth of the intensity, .......The world Health organization tracked 10,000 Cellphones users over the course of
10 years,as a reported in the New York times on november 13th 2010 the date In this study indicated, that
subject who used a cell phene 10 or more years doubled the risk of developing brain tumors. Experts point out
that the single most effective way to reduce risk is not to press your call phone against your head while using it,
since the phone emit radiation you expose yourself to at the very least you should hold the phone 1/2 an inch to
one full inch away from your ear but ideally should get in the habit of not putting it up to your head at all
another option is to use your speakerphone. So please get in the habit of keeping your cell phone away from
your ear when talking and encourage your friends and family to do the same. Start today with your next call and
continue every day in the future. we can avoid the slow- motion epidemic that that doctors and scientist are
warning us about as long as we remember to keep this away from this.....Thank you for your

due to all of His blessing, mercy, and guidance upon all of us. Shalawat and salam may everlastingly be upon
our Great Prophet Muhammad Saw who have led and guided us from dark into bright path......... To all the
ladies, gentlemen, and audience proud of, There must be no one here who wants to get sick. All we wish each
day is being healthy. By being healthy we can then earn the life for our daily lives. With healthy body we
can....... then do all the daily activities. We all know when we are sick, it's not only our own selves who feel it,
but also our wives will get busy to take care of us, our children will be ignored, and we surely will need enough
money to cure the sickness. To be healthy all the time then we must take care of our health as best as we can.
The way we can do from now on is to get used to run a healthy lifestyle in our daily routine. Audience respect,
Preventing is much better than medicating. We have ever heard many cases that people spent some of their
wealth just to cure their sickness, like heart disease, cancer they were suffering. However, health is indeed
costly. No matter how much the money we have spent to cure the serious sickness, even tough it is cured, we
could never regain our health condition just like the first time before we have the sickness. The best way to be
kept away from various chronic sicknesses is by preventing the sicknesses to come. One of the best ways is by
getting used to live a healthy lifestyle. To all the ladies, gentlemen, and audience I love,.....Surely we need to
understand first what healthy lifestyle means Healthy lifestyle is someone's habit to run healthy life in daily
lives and avoid bad habits that can
disrupt the health. What is the consequence by not doing healthy lifestyle? It could cause numerous sicknesses,
such as heart diseases, hypertension, stroke, cancers, diabetes, chronic lung disease, obesity, osteoarthritis,
osteoporosis, and many more. All of these sicknesses are caused by three main factors, namely smoking, lack of
physical activities and consuming fibrous meals. Therefore, to prevent all those illnesses we need to run a
healthy lifestyle everyday. ....What are the benefits from running a healthy lifestyle?..-Body will be healthier
and stronger against sickness,- Daily activities will run better and you look more attractive,- More productive,-
Prevented from various contagions like heart disease, hypertension, stroke, diabetes, chronic lung disease,
osteoporosis. What is healthy lifestyle like?....1. Taking balanced and nutritious foods, high fiber, low fats,2.
Doing physical activities for 30 minutes each day,3. Not smoking.......That's all my speech. I wish from now on
we can take care of good for everyone. Please forgive me for any mistake on my words. That‟s all my
speech...Wassalamu'alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.

introverts make great leaders If I weee to ask you to picture a stereotypical leader, what qualities would
immediately spark in your head? According to an article in the ASCA newsletter, most people would
immediately picture someone confident ,brash, and outgoing. The results were that the stores with an extrovered
leader earned a higher profit than the stores with an extrovered leader. So does this mean a companies should
hore introverts for upper management positions and in the next 4 minutes or so, i'm going to talk about the pros
and cons of Intoverted leadership as well as what can the companies to close the qap between introverted and
extrovered leadership. The ASCA Newsletter article, 7 reasons introverts make great leader, says that introverts
make great leaders because they are great listeners and usually calmer and better prepared than extroverts. They
often prefer to collaborate rather than telling others what to do,unlike extroverts who prefer to lead. Also
introverts don't typically settle on a singel idea. They like to explore depeer for alternativos and Will explore
until they are satisfied. In addition, introverts prefer solitude to reflect and theorize on ideas and if they' re not
doing those things, they'd write. I am sorry if I had a mistake Thank you very much for your nice attention and

Assalamualaikum warohmatullahi wabarokatuh...The honorable, miss Pipit Rahayu,M.Pd, as a lecturer of

I am a student of English study program from third semester.First of all, let's say thanks to Allah SWT who has

Secondly, sholawat and salam be with our prophet Muhammad SAW who has guided us from the darkness to

Today, I would like to tell you about my persuasive speech ........entitled is the negative impact of social media
to teenagers.,,,,,Ladies and gentlement We also depend on our smartphones for work, school, our personal and
social lives. When was the last time you left home without your phone and kept on going? You may have forgot
it. The internet has become eeee a significant part of our daily lives. So to has social media, and it is having an
impact on today's teens. Teenagers spend a lot of time in browsing the network, particulary on social media like
facebook, twitter, instagram and many more. As they find it the best form of communication mode. However,
eee social media have negative impact to teenagers and it also can influence the today's teens. ........Like online
vs reality, social media itself is not the problem. It is the way people use it in place of actual communication and
in person socializing. Friends on social media may not actually be friends on the reality, they may even be
strangers. The next, eeeee social media can increased eeeeee usage, the more time spend on social media can
lead cyberbullying, social anxienty, depression and exposure to content that is not age appropriate. Next, Social
media is addicting. According to a study by the marketers at mediakix, people spend more time on social media
each day than they do on eating, drinking and social combined. So as teenagers, we should be able to use social
media for useful things. Wisely using Social media to avoid negative impact cause we can use social media to
many positive things like for communication,to expand friendship and many more....and we must also remember
that the impact depends by the user. Okay I think that's all, I hope it's will be usefull for us. Thank you for your
attention...Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarokatu

Secondly, my peace and salutation to our prophet Muhammad SAW who has guide us from the darkness to
brightness. Okey, let me introduce myself my name is Rice Gus Gulita Sari I'm the third semester of English
Study Program from University of Pasir Pengaraian. Okey, I would like to deliver a speech with the title "don't
insecure let's be grateful". Everybody has a weakness or something that makes them feel like they're imperfect,
or they need to change. One of the main feeling that I believe is causing this is insecurity. Based on Wikipedia,
insecurity is a feeling of unease or nerveousness and could be triggered by feeling vulnerable in some way about
oneself. self image or ego. Actually we didn't understand what feeling nerveous had to to with it. There are 8
commons cause of insecurity: 1. Comparing yourself to others...2. Apperance and Imperfections...eeeeee 3.
Acceptance by others...4. Feeling unloved or unwanted...5. Not measuring up to the standard of others...6.
Fear...7. Failure...8. Tragic incident...And there are some way to stop being insecure:...1. Forgive the past...2.
Accept all yourself..3. Stop comparing yourself to others....4. eeeeee Trust yourself....Okey, I say to friends
eeeeeee not to be too insecure because it can cause anxiety, stress, mental illness, and others. Let's be grateful
and let's be confident because we're perfect. I think enough for my speech, thank you for your
attention...Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarokatu

Assalamualaikum Warahmatulullahi Wabarakatuh...Good morning everyone. The honorable, Ms. Pipit Rahayu,
M.Pd, ,the honorable sister yorin and my beloved all of my friends. First of all, let we say thank to Allah SWT,
who has giving us blessing and healthy. And then, sholawat and salam to our prophet Muhammad SAW by
saying "allahummasolli ala syaidina Muhammad, waala ali syaidina Muhammad". Okay, ladies and gentleman, I
would like to speech on a very important topic, that is “Become an Activist",...Being a young person growIng
up in a rural part of the developing world, I have never liked to be called a "leader of tomorrow." .........Many of
our politicians have adopted this phrase, always calling the youths "leaders of tomorrow." Are you one of the
leaders of tomorrow? As for me, I strongly deny that I am a leader off TODAY and tomorrow. To me,
leadership is not a process, but a natural choice based on how well one is able to lead and influence. If we are to
go back to records of most of the well documented past events, we had prominent figures like Nelson Mandela,
Mahatma Gandhi ,and Martin Luther King, who still stand as examples of what an activist must be. They are the
people who, on our behalf, took a stand to decide on how the future of our world should look. they were true
activists, with no corrupt minds at all Ladies and gentlemen, There are many issues facing us today, which really
need our collective attention. We talk of global warming, and climate change, human trafficking, terrorism, high
rates of unemployment, poverty, and hunger in the developing world. All of these issues need our attention as
leaders of today. It is not too late for us to become activists and stand together in a common battle of making
this world a conducive living place for all of us......Ladies and gentlemen, changing the world is not a matter of
carrying on our shoulders weapons of mass destruction. It is not an issue of holding terrorizing demonstrations
in our streets. It is not about looting public places, but it is about coming up with good initiatives and
constructive actions. Yes! Constructive actions.....Ladies and gentlemen, let us fight with courage, hope,
objectivity, and with unity. Fall seven times, stand up eight; this should be our motto!. Let us take these
universal adversities as our opportunities to show the world our best. Let darkness in this fight, at last, show us
the stars. In conclusion, I believe that we are all geared to do something to positively change this world into
what we want to see. Let us be the change we want to see, and that change will come for us. Thank you very
much for your attention.Okay, ledies and gentleman. I think that is all. Thank you so much for your
attention....Wassalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

Wulan....First of all, let's thank to Allah SWT,who has given US mercies and blessing,so we can attend in this
occasion without trouble and obtacles. In this opportunity,I would like to deliver speech about We all know the
saying that cleanliness is part of faith. For that, we must maintain cleanliness around us and wherever we are.
We can do things from simple things, like throwing garbage in its place. Why is it still difficult to dispose of
trash in its place even though it is so easy? Because some of us still don't realize the importance of maintaining
cleanliness by disposing of trash in its place. Some of us still tend to underestimate waste, assuming there are no
bad effects from the small trash that we throw away. Even though these small pieces of trash can have a very big
bad impact........So, let us together start getting used to maintaining cleanliness in our school environment and
also around our homes....I think thats all my speech,,thanks for your attention...Assalamualaikum

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi wabarokatu...I am delvita sari from english study program semester
four...okay at my video here...i want to give you an example of the persuasive speech, the title is Why Is Love
not a Gift but a Challenge? .... When we think about love, we imagine lovely pictures of romantic kisses,
exciting adventures, and living happily ever after. Why do we always forget about the other things that stand
behind these nice images? Why don't ....why dont we remember fights, tears, and broken hearts? The answer is
simple – we don't want to. It is easier to take love as a dream, not reality Such unrealistic beliefs are the root of
all the conflicts in romantic relationships. We should .....we should remember that love is not a blessing or a
present of fate. It is a complex and fragile structure built on the foundation of mutual respect, understanding, and
trust. Otherwise. they won t last long The most important thing that we have to understand is that there is no
perfectly compatible partner for....for every human being Moreover most people are totally incompatible. We
are too weird for each other. Would you like to meet a person who behaves and thinks exactly like you? If your
answer is yes," try to recall all the episodes of your life that you reoret about o you re ashamed of. Have you
changed your mind? Nobody is perfect, so we have no right to demand perfection from others while we keep
making mistake. We have to be ready to teach them and to learn from them Ihat s one more essential aspect of
good relationships. Our partners are the only ones who can honestly tell us about our weaknesses. Parents don't
do that because they love us too much. Our friends don t do that because they don't care about our self-
development. But when we hear the words of citicism from our loved ones, we take it as an attack.Remember
that our partners don't want to humiliate us or make fun of us. They simple try to make us into better people.
Another problem that we frequently face in romantic relationships is our partner's unwillingness to share his or
her thoughts and feelings. You see, being loved is easy and delightful. Loving s much more tricky. In truth,
loving is a skill that has to be trained. Many people think that loving doesn't require learning and that we can
love Someone tollowing our emotions and instincts. fhat s so not true love 1s challenging, hard work. It is
teaching and learning. It is your willingness to become a better person for your lover. Love can be a gift. but
only a deserved one.Okay that‟s all.....thanks you for attention and sorry for my mistake...Assalamualaikum

sister Wulan....First of all, let's thank to Allah SWT,who has given us mercies and blessing, secondly to our
prophet muhammad SAW by saying allahummasolli‟alamuhammad wa‟ala ali sayyidina muhammad ...In this
opportunity,I would like to deliver speech about Juvenile deliquency....We need to know, the delinquencies
committed by adolescents today are increasingly concerning. Smoking, fighting, brawl, to the speed of narcotics
and bullying are forms of juvenile deliquency that are rife in our teens today. of course, the negative impact
morally is very felt, both for us and our youth....These delinquencies are caused by various factors, both within
the adolescent and outside the adolescent. Lack of self-control in adolescents is an internal factor that causes
adolescents to commit delinquency. Meanwhile, divorce, pound, friends and bad environment are factors outside
of adolescents who like juvenile delinquency.......We also have to educate the teenagers around us so they can
choose good friends and environment, and dare to avoid friends and bad environment. By making all these
efforts, our teenagers can avoid juvenile delinquency behavior and they will become smart and noble
teenagers.....Therefore, let's prevent juvenile delinquency by educating our adolescents as best as possible, be it
at home, school, or in the community, so that later they become smart and good-natured teenagers. I think thats

Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarokatu...I would like to thanks god Allah SWT who has given us many
blessing and mercies so we can attend in this program with good conditions.my sholawat and salam given to
our prophet Muhammad SAW by saying allahummasolli‟alamuhammad wa‟ala ali sayyidina muhammad. And
then i would like to introduce my self . my name is Nurjannah....Well, ladies and gentlemen, in this nice
occasion I would like to tell you about environment. Environment is everything around us. Environment
consists of two....main parts which are biotic and abiotic environment. Biotic environment is everything around
us which are live, for example plants, animals and human beings. While abiotic environment is everything
around us which are not live, for example stone, water, wind, land and etc. We must protect our environment as
good as possible because it can influence our live. As we source of nature which can help people live peacefully.
So as human being we.....should....preserve the forest. There are some efforts which should be done by all
people: the first,Not cutting down the trees in the forest...number two Planting any kinds of trees in the barren
area of the forest .Cutting down the trees in the forest can cause many disasters for human beings. Of course it
can cause flood because the rain water can‟t be absorbed by the root of plants. so the water flows directly to the
ground. There are many damage caused by the flood, many people being homeless because of flood, the flood
kill many kinds of pet, many factories can‟t produce anything, transportation can‟t run well because the bridge is
broken and so on. Actually, the disasters above can be minimized if all of human beings can preserve our
environment and we must pay more attention to the environment whenever and wherever. We must not throw
away rubbish anywhere which can disturb the flowing of the river water. We should plant any kinds of trees in
the barren area or in side of the road. By doing those simple efforts, it means we have part....participated in the
preservation of our environment. I think that‟s all and thank you for your attention. The last I say
