As discussed, "mirror imaging" is the cognitive act of making an assumption according to

one's own personal preference or behavior. Most analysts initially have the information
they need to assess an information accurately and accordingly; however, upon the
increase of gained knowledge, there is an overconfidence in the analyst which often leads
to assumptions and misjudgement. As a human beings we have a tendency to compare the
thought processes of others to our own, a grave mistake which leads to faulty decision-
making. An example of when I fell victim to mirror-imaging was during a
miscommunication between my roommate and I which lead to a disagreement which
could have been avoided. Since our move-in date I had a tendency to approach him with
various issues surrounding our residency and the company he kept. Each time I
approached him with a blunt firmness that I would have easily understood and related to
considering the circumstances. I judged my approach based upon my own personality and
expectations. In failing to assess our diferentiations in perspective and communication, a
simple issue with an easy solution transformed into a conflict where he felt as if I was
attacking and placing blame on him. All in all, we simply agreed it was a
miscommunication which could be improved upon in the future by taking the time to

m
er as
understand one another. I could have prevented the fate of this situation by doing three
things: (1) questioning my assumptions, (2) considering an alternative framework of

co

thinking, and (3) role playing. If I had questioned my assumptions, then I could have
evalauted the foundation and validity of those assumptions. Secondly, in considering an

o.
perspective, I would have been more likely to assess how the situation may have
rs e
appeared from the outside looking in, as opposed to my own narrow point of view. Lastly,
ou urc
in role playing, since we did know each other, I could have placed myself in his shoes by
assessing his personality and the affects of my behavior. In conclusion, one can
essentially combat mirror-imaging with self-inquiry and a more realistic level of
o

confidence in one's own knowledge.
