1. In the video, Hetain Patel discusses ways of understanding who he is.

● What were some influences he discussed?

During the video, he did mention about his India kurta pajama, he felt a little bit
uncomfortable that when people assumed he was representing something related to India.
However, it was not how he felt when he wore that clothes. From this point, I believed that he
wanted to stand out the point that people usually judge people through similarity. It means
whenever people see someone’s outlook, they often organize them into the same groups. Hetain,
as an example, who wore India cloths, people thought he performed his culture or something
related to Indian. However, he wore it because he wanted to look like the character in the
movie. That was a good example of similarity.
Furthermore, the discussion showed us that we can inform ourselves by personal

m
construction. It means we experience more, we explore more about our self-concepts. For

instance, Hetain learned a concept (be formless, shapeless, like water) by reading Spider-Man

Also, Yuyu mentioned that “we learn who we are by copying others”, it is known as

reflected appraisal. We are influenced by our parents or closed people. For example, Hetain

explained the meaning of reflected appraisal by giving an example that he imitated his father .
He shaved off all his hair, so he could look like his father.

● What thoughts, ideas or questions came up while watching this video?

During watching the video, I was thinking directly of myself, how my self-concept is

shaped. When Hetain discussed about the India kurta pajama, I believe that idea relates to
terminology “similarity”. It sounded like we seemed to judge people through their look, then put
them directly into a group that might not actually for them.

In the end of the video, Hetain said: “Imitating somebody can reveal something unique,”

I did not really understand what he meant. Is that true that he wanted to tell us that whenever we
imitate someone, we can find something that is really ourselves such as core values?

There are some questions come up while watching this video:

1) What does the sentence” Imitating somebody can reveal something unique” really mean?
Th

2) In the beginning of the video, Hetain said he did not want to speak English because he did not
want people to judge about his northern accent. I wonder how it connect to the concept “who am
sh

I, think again”.

2. “Who are you?” and “What makes you you?”:

From the textbook, self-concept is known as table set of perceptions we have about
ourselves; it is formed in three ways: reflected appraisal, social comparison, and personal

construction. Reflected appraisal creates one of my self-concepts. As being an international
college student, my Vietnamese friends might think I am lucky to study in a developed country,
but I am so stressful whenever I am thinking about school. In Vietnam, all parents want their
child to have a better education, so most of them would love to give their kids a chance to study
overseas such as the United States. When kids go to study in the United States, people around the
parents will expect that those kid will get high grades or success. My parents, who work so hard
to sponsor me to study abroad, also hope me to gain victory and get a good job after I graduate
from school. Therefore, when I go to America to study, I bring with me a high expectation from
my parents, so I have to work so hard to able to get good grades. Although people around me
think I can travel lots of places to learn new things, actually I have to work hard every day.
Beside reflected appraisal, the social comparison also informs my self-images. I am a
competitive person because people around me are incredibly competing with each other. They
always want to be the winner in a competition or get higher grades than others. Because I study
and interact with them, I usually compete with people around me.

concept by my experience. I started taking photos a few years ago; my friend usually asked me
for taking pictures for them. They said I took incredible images that they loved.
