Critical Questions for Discussion
•Discuss Mead’s stages of self. Describe how the development of self is unique for every individual,
and cite personal experiences showing how Mead’s stages of self relate to your experiences.
-there are three stages in Mead's stages of self. Which are; preparatory stage, play stage and game
stage. In the preparatory stage (0-3 years old), children imitate the people around them. And during the
play stage (3-5 years old), children start to view themselves in the relation to others as they learn to
communicate through language and symbols then, in the game stage (begins in the early school years;
about 8-9 years old), children understand not only their own social position but also those of others
around them. I can say that my self development is different from most, because it is naturally shaped
by my parents, may parents are the only one who guide me when I starting to play, to communicate and
get along with others and they taught me a good manners that I need to possess, they guide me all the
time when I was a child, my parents are the only one who help me to surpassed this stage well and
today I apply it every day. Self development is important because it is the process of preparation of our
self.
•What is the most expensive thing you have bought so far? Analyze the reasons why you chose that
item instead of a cheaper brand. Are you satisfied with that expensive possession of yours? Do you
still consider buying another one when a new model comes out in the market? Justify your answer.
How do you think the sense of self is achieved in our present society wherein consumption has been
the main organizing element? Focus your discussion on Baudrillard’s theory on the impact of
postmodernity on social life.
--The most expensive item i sold was my cell phone which cost 6,000 and this is what i use now. when I
first got a cellphone it was cheap, it cost 500 pesos which is second hand. I haven't used a cellphone
before, I just used my cellphone to call my parents or for emergencies. Yes, I really wanted to buy an
expensive cell phone because in our time "the more expensive, the more durable" and I chose to buy
this because it is what I need now. but before I bought this expensive cell phone, I also looked at
whether we could buy an expensive cell phone for my studies. I also depended on our situation before I
bought a cellphone and actually I saved up to buy it. when I know I'm using it then, I'll buy. but when it's
not necessary to buy I don't buy. it is really important to bear in our mind that "needs first before wants
because everything's fades"
•Interview or have a conversation with three famous students (e.g basketball player, student
organization officer ) in the campus. Ask them about how they view themselves as they socialize with
other students and how they think others perceive them. Do they think most people have perceived
them correctly? Analyze how famous personalities understand themselves based on Cooley’s looking-
glass self.
--.based on the famous players I interviewed, there are other people who even though they really
show it like that, for example how they talk, they don't really believe, because they think we are just
pretending to talk well so to become more famous. not really everyone will feel your true identity or in
other words they don't see your true identity, they don't see the real you because when you are famous
they have negative expectations of you. For me, maybe they should just show who and what they really
are. No need to hide or pretend. And especially don't think about what others are saying so that we do
not change the way we look at their self.
Performance Tasks
How do you perceive yourself as you interact with other people in the society? How do you think you
formed this perception of yourself?Identify the people, groups, or social institutions that significantly
influenced your understanding of yourself
Consider Mead’s concepts of the I and me self. Using the graphic organizer below, make list of your
characteristics for each of these two categories. Which one better describes your social self?
Social self
I self Me self
I self Me self
---- I-Self better describes my social self because I don't want to depend my self to the other, I want to
depend always in myself. Because for me, no one can understand myself, only me can understand
myself to what I want to act, to communicate or to interact with other people.
Write an essay on the theories and concepts of Mead, Cooley, Baudrillard, and Lanuza. Consider the
following questions in writing your essay.
1.What are the three things you have discovered about your social self?
-- The three things that I have discovered about my social self are I can understand myself who I am, I
can create goals for myself, I can build good relationships with others. Interaction with others shapes my
personality and also help me to live with higher overall quality of life.
2.How are you going to apply your insights in understanding your social self?
-- I leaned many lessons that led me to who I socialize with, how to socialize with other people or how
to interact with other people. Simply, I apply my insights in understanding my social self in me or in
myself. Because I have come to this point, where I have learned or I had knowledge about my social self.
So, I will continue to apply it to myself because I know it will help me to level up and also help me to be
a better person more than I know about my self.
My Reflection
-- Social self development is important because it led us to build a meaningful and lasting
friendships and we can recognized the value to those around us. Displaying good manners which we
learned from our parents, knowing how to communicate effectively, knowing how to considerate the
feelings of other, how to act properly is importance because it build a positive relationships with others.
In addition, if we are fully develop our social self it influence us to be more confident and also if we have
a healthy social self it has a big impact to meet our goals in life.
