Dance

Dance is a rhythmic and expressive movement of the body in successive movement usually accompanied by music.
It has been said to be the mother of the arts, for it’s the oldest of art which actually reflects man’s age old need to
communicate different emotions such as joy, grief, excitement and others.

Reasons why people dance:

 It has been used in worship.


 It plays a role in courtship.
 It serves as a form of acquaintance for a man and woman.
 It is an expression of the joy one feels.
 As in old times, it brings magical power s to people.
 It brings victory or somehow restores health to life.
 It even breaks the monotony of the daily activities.
 It serves to entertain others.
 It gives beauty and inspiration to others.
 It provides personal and effectiveness of communication.

Significant features of the dance as a form


 Movement within the body which includes the hands and arms.
 Movement from one space to another

Kinds of dances
 Ethnologic dance - This is a dance that is indigenous to a certain race or country. The term ethnic is used to
distinguish religious dances, and designed as hymns of praise to a god, or to bring on good fortune in peace and war.
 Social dance - These are popular type of dancing for pleasure as generally performed by pairs or group of people
following a definite step or pattern.
a. ballroom dance – It actually originated as square dance which was followed by waltz, tango, foxtrot, swing, etc
b. folk dance – It usually derived from ethnic dances. People all over the world have their own folk dances as distinct
to their specific culture.
 Spectacular or theatrical dance - These are dances which are intended for viewing audience. Usually, these are
performed for the entertainment of spectators.
a. Ballet - It’s the ultimate expression of art in dance which originated in the royal courts during the middle ages.
b. Modern dance - It is often characterized as something natural and free.

Dancing can be a way to stay fit for people of all ages, shapes and sizes. It has a wide range of physical and mental
benefits including:

 improved condition of your heart and lungs


 increase muscular strength, endurance and motor fitness
 increased aerobic fitness
 improved muscle tone and strength
 weight management
 stronger bones and reduced risk of osteoporosis
 better coordination, agility and flexibility
 improved balance and spatial awareness
 increased physical confidence
 improved mental functioning
 improved general and psychological wellbeing
 greater self-confidence and self-esteem
 better social skills.
Folk dance

Folk dance refers to a variety of dances developed by group of people or communities that reflects about their way
of living.

- Bon Odori – folk dance from Japan


- Tinikling – folk dance from the Philippines
- Lion dance – folk dance from China

Nature of folk dance:

 occupational dance – depicts action of a particular occupation.


- example: Binatbatan dance from ilocos norte
- batbat is the name of the stick used
 religious/ceremonial dances – associated with religion, vows and ceremonies.
- example: dugso dance from bukidnon, also in agusan and misamis oriental
- kaliga is a monobo word means feast/fiesta
- kaamulan is a monobo word means tribal gathering
 comic dance – depict funny movements for entertainment.
- example: kinoton dance from ilocos
 game dance – done with play elements.
- example: lubi-lubi dance is a bicol dance played using coconut shell, from leyte and samar
 wedding dances – performed during wedding feasts.
- example: habanera botoleña
 courtship dance – depict the art of courtship.
- example: kuratsa dance from leyte and samar
 festival dances – suitable for special occasions.
- example: pandanggo sa ilaw dance from mindoro
 war dance – ceremonial dance performed before a battle or to celebrate victory.
- example: sagayan is a maguindanaon dance from maranao
