AGENDA
A pair of master potters, Pablo and Juana are the only ones who keeps the Sagada pottery studio going.
Both specializing in stoneware pottery. What separates this studio from the rest is, their distinct design
inspired by the "BAHAG". The bahag has its unique textiles, renowned for its unique patterns: (a) tiktiko,
(b) matmata, (c) sopo and (d) kulibangbang. Each with its different meaning.
Zigzag design of the tiktiko depicts the mountain and forests where their rice fields are located.
The X's in tiktiko and the ◊’s matmata imply abundance, reverence, awe and high regard.
The X's tiktiko represent rice mortars because it resembles the shape of their rice mortars. it is relevant to them because rice gives
nourishment to their body that is why they admire it and is important to them like a god; it is everywhere and all-seeing
The double-lined ◊’s matmata are perceived to represent rice grains and the eyes
The combination of X's tiktiko and ◊’s matmata are expressive of wealth, abundance and fertility.
PROCESS OF SAGADA POTTERY
to popularize a dying art of stoneware pottery making in Sagada which makes use of symbols and motifs
inspired by the bahag through sharing the process to the public. What makes the Cordilleran design unique is its
meaning and symbolism behind each design element. It is only found in one region of the Philippines which is
the province of Benguet.
i will be utilizing stations in each step of the process. This will provide the audience with a more personal
experience and it will also improve the workflow of pottery making. A semi-private and semi public area is
positioned in the middle to control the access of the area.
