TECHNOLOGIES

RATIONALE

 Climate change threatens all countries,

with developing countries the most
vulnerable – 75 to 80% cost of damages.
 Philippines is expected to be increasingly
exposed to extreme weather events,
temperature rise, shifting rainfall patterns, and sea level
rise.
 Philippines is ranked in the top 10 countries worldwide at
risk for both climate change and disasters
RATIONALE

 Temperatures will rise

 Rainfall will increase or decrease
depending on location
 Sea level rise
 Affect economic development and increase
poverty
 Higher costs of managing impacts of climate
variability
RATIONALE

 Farmers start land preparation at

the onset of rainy season to
maximize rainfall utilization
 They do not have a written crop plan as basis
of schedule for their farming activities
 Given climate information and forecast,
farmers should be able to prepare their own
crop plan to maximize water resources
OBJECTIVE

General:
• To promote climate resilient agricultural technologies
Specific:
At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:
a. Describe Cropping Parallelogram;
b. Enumerate Climate Resilient Rice Varieties
c. Describe Rice-Based Integrated Farming System
d. List down Soil Conservation and Management Technologies
CROPPING PARALLELOGRAM

Definition
A simple instrument/geometric tool used to test a
potential cropping pattern, sequence or area to
be cultivated versus the available water supply

Basic Information Needed

- Life span of crops (days)
- Water requirement of crops (mm)
- Rainfall Data

RICE-BASED INTEGRATED FARMING
SYSTEM
 refers to agricultural systems that integrate livestock,
poultry, fish and crops so that the “waste” from one
enterprise becomes an input for another part of the
system, which reduces costs and improves production
and income of farmers.
 These enterprises not only supplement the income of
the farmers but also help in increasing the family
labor employment.
RICE-BASED INTEGRATED FARMING
SYSTEM
Integrated Farming - mix of farming
enterprises such as rice, corn, high value
crops, livestock, poultry and fishery, which
farm family efficiently manage and utilize its
resources for an increased income.

Mitigation strategies for drought in rainfed areas

CLIMATE RESILIENT RICE VARIETIES
 Management options for rice in saline-prone
areas
1. Choosing the right variety
2. Prepare the field thoroughly
3. Raise healthy & vigorous seedling
4. Pest management before transplanting
5. Nutrient management before and after transplanting
6. Crop establishment and transplanting
7. Proper pest management after transplanting
8. Harvest & post harvest operations
CLIMATE RESILIENT RICE VARIETIES
Nine steps to the production of rice
in submergence prone-areas
1. Choose the rice genotypes
2. Raise healthy and vigorous seedlings
3. Prepare land thoroughly
4. Do pest management before transplanting
5. Do nutrient management before transplanting
6. Plant and use appropriate plant spacing
7. Use post submergence nutrient management in the main field
8. Do pest management at vegetative and reproductive stages
9. Harvest and postharvest operations

TECHNOLOGY

“Fighting poverty and hunger in the land

starts in the upland, while not easy, it can be
won”
SLOPING AGRICULTURE LAND TECHNOLOGY
> is a package technology on soil conservation and food production
> integrating different soil conservation measures in just one
setting
> a method of growing field and permanent crop in 3-5 meter wide
bands between contour rows of nitrogen fixing tress
> NFTs are thickly planted in double rows to make hedgerows
> hedge is 1.5-2 meters tall, it is cut down to about 75 centimeters
and the cuttings are placed in the alley-ways to serve as organic
fertilizers.
