1 Our numbers are growing fast

Lots of things make the birth rate change in some places. For each of the
following, explain how the birth rate will change (up or down) and why.
a Children being made to go to school by law:

The birth rate would go down because kids would be going to school
instead of staying at home and taking care of their own family.

b Longer paid maternity leave:

The birth rate would increase because mothers would have more time to be
with their children and take care of them. Therefore, the children would
have better chances of surviving.

c Better education for girls and women:

The birth rate would go down because girls and women would focus more
on studying and their own career instead of being a housewife.

d Reduced taxes for having three children:

The birth rate would go up as people would be more secure in finances and
they wouldn’t hesitate to have more children.

e Better survival rates for children (so that more make it to adulthood):

The birth rate would increase because less children would die as their
chances of survival are better.

f State pensions:

The birth rate would go up because older people would have enough
money for their own needs and therefore they would be healthier and
they would live longer.
