END SEMESTER EXAM

Total (30 marks)
PART-I (Answer any 5 of the following)
(2 x 5 = 10)

1. Identify the failure pattern in the below pictures and guess the type of load it is subjected
to (Please do not write more than two sentences on each failure).

(a) (b)

(c) (d)

Figure 1

2. Observe the picture shown in Fig. 2, and match it with the type of restraint it provides in
the below given options.

(i) Restraint to frame distorsion

(ii) Restraint to lateral torsional buckling
(iii) Restraint to warping
(iv) Torsional restraint

3. Identify the type of buckling shown below. (in one or two words)

(a) (b)

(d)
(c)

4. Stiffening plates are provided to prevent local, distortional and global buckling. True/False?
Justify your answer.
5. Why the yield strength of structural steel reduces with increase in thickness? What is the
upper limit in thickness for using column curves?
6. An ISA 130×130×10 used as a strut has the length between the intersections at each end as
3 m and the yield stress fy= 250 MPa. If it is connected with gusset plate by one bolt at each
end (assume fixed condition), then the equivalent slenderness ratio will be?
PART – II
(10 x 2 = 20)

1. A beam-column of ISMB 300 is to carry a factored axial load of 600 kN and moments about
its strong axis of 50 kN-m at the top and -50 kN-m at the bottom over an effective length
of 3000 mm along both the axes. Check the adequacy of the section.
2. In the below truss system, (i) find the zero load members by visual inspection, (ii) check
the design adequacy of ISMC-225 section for the compression member in this truss system.
Also, (iii) design the connection of the central vertical element with the 10 mm gusset plate
using 8.8 grade bolts.
