READING STRATEGY AND ITS IMPLICATION

What specific strategy will you employ in this new normal focusing on noting details, tone and
mood, cause and effect, or getting the main idea/theme of the selection. How will you utilize it?

As educators gear with the “new normal” set-up in this Covid-19 pandemic, this is the
appropriate time to use our discomfort to forge a new paradigm. This is now the time for schools
to ensure that teachers do not just translate what they do inside the classroom into their online
teachings.
I really struggled to re-envision instruction in this new setting. How do you teach kids to
read when you are away from them? I assumed the school closure would be short-term, so I
only needed a short-term solution. After all, we’d be back in school by May, right? How wrong I
was…This situation lasted for a year and we still don’t know what future holds. So, for the
meantime, we must think o other ways to continue reaching out and teaching reading in
distance learning modality.
Since our school is adapting modular distancing learning modality, we are giving out
self-learning modules and learning activity sheets to cater the needs of the students. With the
use of these the students can still obtain the expected learning competencies for their grade
level. These strategies are evident in making the modules and learning activity sheets.

SKILLS STRATEGY
Noting details Read a story with full understanding with the guidance of the
parents. Give activities when students are required to jot down
notes or highlight texts and describe the main idea and the
supporting ideas.
If pictures are presented, the students can explain its details
(implicit and explicit)

Activities you can give:

 4 Pics 1 word
 Paint Me A Picture
 Lots of reading and storytelling
 Creative interpretations of text
 Summarizing and paraphrasing a news, articles or
journals
 Using pictures to explain stuff
 Providing worksheets

Cause and effect There’s a lot of strategies that you can use in teaching cause-
and-effect. One way of doing it is by using word clues or word
signal in a situation read by the teacher.

Other strategies:
 Create an Anchor Chart
 Teach Word Clues to Young Striving Readers
 Engage Students with a Cause-and-Effect Game
 Create Graphic Organizers
 Find photos that can show cause and effect. Show
them and the cause-and-effect relationship.
 Student Samples with Illustrations
 Students need to create their own cause and effect
sentences and identify the cause and effect. Illustrating
them is always motivating too!

Getting the main idea Finding the main idea is one of the most challenging reading
strategies to teach. On the surface, it does not seem that hard.
But when faced with the task, kids not only have to
comprehend the passage, but they must figure out which
information is the most important, without getting sidetracked
in the details.
Main idea is one of those concepts which needs to be
revisited over and over. Even though upper grade students
have been introduced to the main idea, they still need so much
practice, especially as the text complexity is increased.

Strategies:
 Start with an Anchor Chart
 Use Pictures
 Use Key Words
 Compare the Supporting Details to the Main Idea
 Use Examples and Non-Examples
 Add the Missing Title
