SERVICE CONNECTION:

• System that connects a Public water distribution system (

Water main) with individual or community’s water
distribution system
• The service connection should be leakage proof
• Only a licenced plumber is permitted to install a service
connection
A service connection contains the following:

• Ferrule
• Goose neck
• Service pipe
• Stop cock
• Water meter
FERRULE:

• Right angled sleeve

made of brass and
gun metal.
• Size: 10 to 50 mm dia
GOOSE NECK:

• Small curved pipe made

of flexible material.
• Length : about 75mm
• Forms flexible connection
between the water main
and the service pipe
SERVICE PIPE:

• Galvanized iron pipe of size less than 50mm dia.

• Laid underground
• Connected to main through ferrule and goose neck
STOP COCK:
• Screw down type valve used
for stopping and opening
water supply
• Generally provided before
the water enters the water
meter
• Also provided inside the
building
WATER METER:

• Measures and records the quantity of water consumed

• Generally fixed in an iron box fitted in an opening or cavity and covered with
movable iron cover

• 2 types : Velocity meters

• Positive meters
VELOCITY METERS:

• Velocity meters measure the velocity of water

flow and convert it into the amount of water
flow.
• They operate based on the principle that water
passing through a known cross -sectional area
having a measured velocity is proportional to
the volume of water flow
• Q = aV
POSITIVE METERS:

• This is the only flow measurement technology that

directly measures the volume of the fluid passing
through the flowmeter
• A known quantity of liquid within a small unit
moves with the flow of water. They operate by
repeatedly filling and emptying the unit
FACTORS AFFECTING SIZE OF SERVICE PIPE :

• Losses through friction

• Loss through water meter and valves
• Losses through bends and connections
• Pressure loss due to leakage
• Pressure required at outlet
• Losses due to obstacles
• .
