1. What mass of methane (CH4) must be burned to release -185 kJ of heat?

𝐶𝐻4(𝑔) + 2 𝑂2(𝑔) → 𝐶𝑂2(𝑔) + 2 𝐻2 𝑂(𝑙) ∆𝐻 = −890.4 𝐾𝐽/𝑚𝑜𝑙

2. Using the date below (data gathered when 200 g of water is heated by unknown fuel), calculate the heat
of combustion, ∆H°c of the unknown fuel. Express the answer in kJ/g.
Given:
Initial temperature of water 30°C
Final temperature of water 50°C
Mass of water 200 g
Initial mass of the unknown fuel 40.00 g
Final mass of the unknown fuel 27.00 g

3. Prove that the specific energy of:

a. octane is -47.9 MJ/kg
b. 1-pentanol is -37.82 MJ/kg

4. Calculate the energy released (in the form of heat) when 57.0 g of 1-pentanol reacts with oxygen
2 CH3(CH2)4OH + 15 O2(g) → 10 CO2(g) + 12 H2O(l) ∆H = -3331 kJ/mol
Express the answer on kWh and HPh, the basic unit of electricity. (Conversion Factor: 1MJ =
0.28 kWh ≈ 0.37 HPh)

5. A spirit burner used 1.00 g methanol to raise the temperature of 100.0 g water in a metal can from
28.0°C to 58.0°C. Calculate the heat of combustion in kJ/mol.
