Solutions to Temperature problems

DIRECTIONS: Use the TEMPERATURE formulas to solve the following problems. Be sure to show your work for each problem
(write the given, the formula, numbers with correct units, and the answer with the correct units).

1. Convert 37˚C to both Fahrenheit degrees and Kelvin.

2. Convert 80K to both Celsius and Fahrenheit degrees.
3. Calculate the difffference between 97˚F and 40˚F in both Celcius degrees and Kelvin.
4. Convert -40˚F to Celsius degrees.
5. The boiling temperature of liquid oxygen (O2 ) is -297.3˚F. Convert this temperature to Celsius
degrees and Kelvin.

Calculating Specific Heat/Heat Capacity Worksheet

DIRECTIONS: Use the heat and method of mixture formulas to solve the following problems. Be sure to
show your work for each problem (write the given, the formula, numbers with correct units, and the
answer with the correct units).

If q = mc∆T, where q = heat energy, m = mass, and ∆T = change in temp. Remember, ∆T = (T final – Tinitial).
Show all work and proper units.
1. PCl3 is a compound used to manufacture pesticides. A reaction requires that 96.7 g of PCl 3 be raised
from 31.7 oC to 69.2oC. How much energy will this require given that the specific heat of PCl 3 is 0.874
J/g oC?
2. A 15.75-g piece of iron absorbs 1086.75 joules of heat energy, and its temperature changes from 25°C
to 175°C. Calculate the specific heat capacity of iron.
3. A 1.5 kg iron horseshoe at 800C is dropped into a bucket of water @ 20C. If the mass of water in the
bucket is 5 kg, what is the final temperature of the water-iron mixture, given c iron = 448 J/kg˚C and swater
= 4187 J/kg˚C?
4. 8750 J of heat are applied to a piece of aluminum, causing a 56.0 oC increase in its temperature. The
specific heat of aluminum is 0.9025 J/g x oC. What is the mass of the aluminum?
5. How many degrees would the temperature of a 450 g piece of iron increase if 7600 J of energy are applied
to it? (The specific heat of iron is0.4494 J/g x oC)
