That’s great, because today is full of exciting

and new learnings.
• Review of the past lesson
Last meeting we have discussed about?
“Synonyms and Antonyms.”
Yes, very good synonyms and antonyms.

Who can give me the meaning of synonyms? “Ma’am, synonyms is a word or phrase that
means exactly or nearly the same as another
word or phrase in the same language.”

Very good. Can you give me examples of

“Ma’am, exit and leave.”
synonyms?
“Ma’am, last and final.”
“Ma’am, accurate and correct.”

Okay, very well.

How about the meaning of antonyms? “Ma’am antonym is a word opposite in
meaning to another;”

Yes, that’s it.

So can someone give me examples of

antonyms? “Ma’am, beautiful and ugly.”
“Ma’am, bitter and sweet.”
“Ma’am, far and near.”

Thank you. I see that you really understood

our previous lesson and because of that we can
now proceed to our next lesson.

B. Learning Tasks

• Preliminary Activity
Task 1: 4pics 1word

Before we start our discussion, I have here

an activity. It is a fun game because I know
everyone already knew this game. The game I
am talking to is “4pics 1word”
I have here sets of picture that has a relation to
our topic for today.
Let’s begin with pictures number 1.

Who can answer? “Ma’am, HOT!”

Okay. Very good. The answer is HOT.

Next picture.
Who can guess the answer? “Ma’am, it is hot again.”
Yes, again it is HOT.
Next.

Okay.

Yes, very good.

Next.
“Ma’am is it tiny?”
What’s the answer?
“Ma’am its minutes.”

It only has 6 letters.

Very good. It is MINUTE. “Ma’am, minute.”

Next picture.

Who can guess the picture? “Ma’am, bark.”

Yes it is BARK.
Okay last picture.
“Ma’am it is bark again.”
Very good.

So class, do you have any idea about our topic “None, Ma’am.”
for today?

That’s okay class because I know this topic is

unfamiliar with you. Now, let’s proceed to our
discussion.

C. Activity
Today we will discuss Denotation and
Connotation.

Are you familiar with that student? “No ma’am.”

Do you have any idea?

Okay, so let me discuss it for you.

Words have duel meaning, a straight forward

or literal meaning and hidden meaning that is
connected to the emotions and imagination.
In other words they have both denotative and
connotative meanings.

Denotation is basically the literal meaning or

the dictionary meaning while connotation is
an idea or a feeling suggested by a certain
word.
Denotation is objective and no emotion is
involved while connotation is subjective. It
involves emotions/ideas.

Understood? “Yes, ma’am.”

Okay, so examples of denotation and
connotation.

1. “I love blue car.”

The underline word is blue.
This is denotation; the literal meaning of the
word is color.

2. “When my cat died, I felt so blue”

Tis is connotation, the feelings suggested by
the word blue is sadness.

Another sentence, kindly read.

“I invited a clown on my birthday.”

The underlined word is clown and it is a

denotation because the literal meaning of the
word clown is a comic entertainer.

Another sentence, please read.

“He is always the clown of the family.”

It is a connotation because the idea suggested

by the word clown is a funny or jolly person.
5. “My dog barks so loud.”

It is denotation, a sound produced by the dog

is the literal meaning of the word barks,

6. “Mom barks at us for not doing our

task.”
The idea suggested by the word barks in the
sentence is yell or shout.

Do you see the difference between Denotation “Yes ma’am.”

and connotation?

Okay, so try to identify if it is denotation or

connotation.

1. It’s too dark to find my pen.

“Denotation”
Is it denotation or connotation?

Correct its denotation.

The word dark means with little/no light.

2. He is the snake in our group.

“Connotation”
Yes. It is connotation because the word snake
is pertaining to an evil or bad person.

3. You are the sun of my life.

“Connotation”
Because sun means light or shines.

Last.

4. The dove flew away.

Dove literally means a type of bird.
“Denotation”
So students do you understood the denotation “Yes ma’am”
and connotation?
So, connotation could be Positive or Negative
in meaning.

Negative connotation as the name suggests is a

word that provokes a negative emotional
response also called unfavourable connotation.
And positive connotation, it is also called
favourable connotation. In this type, a person
feel good about any word or the words are
giving the positive impact to a person.

For example.
“Wow! I didn’t know he was so intelligent.”
The word intelligent in the sentence is positive
connotation. He is being described in a
positive way.

“Now I didn’t know he was such a nerd.”

The word nerd in the sentence has a negative
connotation.

“Our new boss is incredibly driven.”

Positive connotation

“Our new boss is incredibly pushy.”

Negative connotation.

Sort of determined a driven individual is

inspiring but the moment someone crosses
over into pushy is a recipe for disaster.

Can you please read the sentences?

“Our new boss is incredibly driven.”

“Our new boss is incredibly pushy.”

Okay, thank you.

So where do you think is the positive and “The first sentence is the positive ma’am and
negative? the second sentence is the negative
connotation.”

Okay correct. The first sentence is the positive

while the second sentence is the negative.
Okay students do you understand the positive “Yes, ma’am.”
and negative connotation?

Do you understand our topic for today? “Yes, ma’am.”

Do you have any questions or clarification? “None ma’am.”

So always remember, when we say denotation

it is the literal/dictionary definition while
connotation is the hidden meaning that is
connected to the emotions and imagination.
And connotation can be positive and negative
in meaning.

Is that clear? “Yes ma’am.”

Okay that’s all for our discussion

D. Analysis

your activity.

Okay, are you done? “Yes ma’am.”

E. Abstraction

connotation and the second one is positive and
negative connotation.
