2. Reflect on these applications and write down your realizations or reflections
following the CERA Model.

C - Context/Content: main idea learned from this topic

Organic compounds are generally any chemical compounds that contain

carbon-hydrogen bonds. An organic compound is any member of a large class
of gaseous, liquid, or solid chemical compounds whose molecules contain
carbon. Organic molecules are used by human in number of ways; it is used
in industries like foods, pharmaceuticals, fuels etc. Alkanes consist of
chemicals like propane, octane, and methane. These are used extensively as
fuels for things like automobile gasoline and home heating/cooking fuel.
Alcohols include chemicals like ethanol and isopropanol. These are used as
antiseptics and ethanol is a staple of the beverage industry (beer/wine).
Finally, carboxylic acids include a wide variety of chemicals including
pharmaceuticals. Aspirin, one of the oldest commercial drugs, contains a
carboxylic acid.

E - Experience: any personal experience you encountered related to the (past or

present) main topic

As for me, when I hear organic compounds before, I do not know that
there we are using organic compounds in our everyday life. All I know is just the
knowledge about these compounds that they have Carbon, Oxygen, Nitrogen
and hydrogen in its formula. Now, I know that there are different applications of
these organic compounds and we are using this every day, we just do not know
that there are knowledge of chemistry present in these products.

R - Reflection: reactions/realizations/reflections drawn from the main idea

presented
There are different applications of organic chemistry in our daily life. We
just don’t know that these applications belong to the knowledge of organic
compounds. For example, the making of tire in our vehicles, it is color black
because of methane which is an organic compound. From waking up unto laying
asleep, and in between, we are using organic compounds. When we cook our
rice and viands, we are using organic compounds. In fruit ripening we have
ethylene. Whenever we use chargers, televisions, flat iron, we are not
electrocuted because of the polythene surrounding the cable wires. Soft drink
bottle caps are made of polystyrene. In medicine, we have ethyl bromine which
is used for making local anesthesia. Ethyl alcohol is also used in fermentation
and brewing. Applications of organic compounds are widely used, we just don’t
know because we lack knowledge of it.

A - Application: application of learning in relation to your career, community,

home and life in general

Organic compounds are found everywhere. In teaching chemistry, I would

like to highlight and give importance to this topic so that everyone will appreciate
chemistry as a subject and its application to the society, industry, medicine and
agriculture.
