Assignment 1: Module 6 – Performance Appraisal and Career Management

1.) Many managers describe performance appraisal as the responsibility which they like

least. What do you think are the reasons? What could be done to improve this perception?

Performance appraisal is the procedure on which managers dislike working the most or find the

process complicated to follow. There are numerous reasons for this, the most important of which

is inadequacy of awareness of the significance of the performance appraisal process. Another

aspect that could play a role is lack of funding and support in the field of training and

development opportunities. However, there are number of steps that may be taken to alleviate

this predicament, with the assistance of human resource managers in the process of

implementation. They can accomplish this by training the manager on how to execute the

appraisal process effectively. The HR department should be particularly concerned in evaluating

the appraisal structure to ensure that managers receive the best results. Another option is to work

on improving individual development plans and program. This will be used as an administrative

tool for identifying and tracking managers’ development needs, as well as assisting in the

planning of the employee’s training and development needs and aligning worker’s activities with

the company’s mission, goals, and objectives. They can enhance performance appraisals and

transform them into successful instruments for communication, goal setting, and employee

development.
