Concept Note
The objective here is less to focus on the events – the incarceration of former president Jacob Zuma on 7 July 2021 and the alleged insurrectionist
agenda that sparked almost a week-long orgy of destruction, looting, mayhem and deaths of over 300 citizens, before it was stemmed by Friday,
16 July; than on an analysis of the political economy of South Africa, acknowledging the failures as well as the causes thereof, the nature of the
post-apartheid state, and an audit of the party of liberation, its culpability as well as the prospects of regeneration; and, equally important, to
raise insights and issues that inform a possible trajectory for a South Africa with the enormous (human and natural resources) capacity and poten-
tial to institute an economic revolution through a focus on industrialization and manufacturing, reform of the social (especially basic education
and health) sectors, addressing the unemployment curse; and therefore confronting and dismantling the racial and socio-economic architecture of
apartheid, resolving the National Question and enhancing the goal of a New South Africa.
