QUESTION 1

i) Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) refers to protective garment designed to protect


wearer’s body from injury that should be placed in laboratory. Please list four (4) of
them and describe their usage in detail. (CO2-PO1)

ii) Describe both of Primary and Secondary Air Pollutants and provide example of each
category. (CO2-PO1)

QUESTION 2

i) Noise is defined as ‘unwanted sound’ or ‘sound that is loud, unpleasant or unexpected’.


The noise originates from human activities, especially the urbanization and the
development of transport and industry or noise is to be understood as every kind of
sound, which is undesired, disturb or irritates which decrease physical, psychological
or well-being. Discuss the effect of noise to human body system; physically and
psychologically. (CO2PO1)

ii) Construction worksites often produces high levels noise. Residence in the neighboring
area may face various problems due to the noise including sleep disturbance, interfere
with speech communication, behavioral effect, interference with usually conversation
and many other. Recommend two (2) mitigation measures that can be adopted in order
to minimize the impact. (CO2PO1)

i) What is the main reason for determining the amount of solid in wastewater effluent?

ii) What is the purpose of using desiccator while cooling the sample after each heating?

iii) A 50 mL of sample were collected from effluent of a wastewater treatment plant.


Calculate the amount of Total Solid (TS), Volatile Suspended Solid (VSS) and Fixed
Solid (FS) in mg/L when the data obtained are as follows: (CO2PO1)

QUESTION 4

i) Using a simple diagram, explain the mechanism of coagulation process. (CO2PO1)

ii) A Jar Test result indicates that the required amount of flocculant removal can be
achieved using a dosage of 5 ml of a 1% Aluminium Sulphate stock solution in a Litre
of raw water. Calculate the dosage in mg/L? (CO2PO1)

iii) There are different mixing phases during the Jar Test. Explain the reason of these
different phases are performed. (CO2PO1)

QUESTION 5

A standard BOD5 test was conducted to check the efficiency of each treatment process in a
wastewater treatment plant. Table 1 shows the dissolved oxygen (DO) data taken at various
stage in the treatment process flow.
Calculate the BOD value for all the samples. Based on the conventional wastewater treatment
plant operational flow, determine the possible treatment process for each of sample number.
Provide justification of your answer. (CO2PO1)

i) Briefly explain the method for COD experiment.(CO2PO1) (4 marks)


ii) Explain the principal of the COD experiment in determining the water quality based on
the reagents contained in the COD test vial. (CO2PO1) (4 marks)
iii) A wastewater sample from highly contaminated wastewater is taken for COD
measurement. Discuss two precautions that need to be taken to ensure that the COD
data can be read using the spectrophotometer. (CO2PO1) (2 marks)

i) Discuss the effect of high level of Nitrate and Nitrite in the water to human and
environment. (CO2-PO1) (4 marks)

ii) Name four (4) apparatus or reagents needed to perform the Nitrate and Nitrite Test.

iii) Triplicate of samples were collected from the location A, B and C as shown in the
Figure 1. In your opinion, which of the sampling location will have the highest amount
of Nitrate and Nitrite? Explain your answer. (CO2PO1) (4 Marks)
