Do you know other print or television advertisements that are non-ethical because they are
discriminatory, stereotypical, and/or sexist?
Spot these ads in magazines, newspapers, social media networks, Youtube, or any other
platform.
I believe that Reebok's "cheat on your girlfriend" ad was not an absolute error because,
in terms of making a business advertisement, I can say that an ad with a bit of humor can
somehow catch the attention of possible customers. However, the phrase "cheat on your
girlfriend" can still convey an unethical message to other individuals. Honestly, based on my
understanding, the advertisement of Reebok is trying to comprehend that cheating in a
relationship is acceptable unless you don't cheat at your workout. Well, we all know that on
most occasions, cheating is unnecessary thing to do. Overall, in my opinion, advertising
destructive behaviors like this may step on some individual's ethics making the ad unethical to
others.
Even though the advertisement is very amusing on my end, I still find it difficult to argue
that Reebok should have been more selective in using those actual words. They should have
made sure that clarity exists in the message they want to convey to potential customers. For me,
companies should never overlook ethics when using marketing tactics, regardless of how good
an ad is in terms of increasing brand awareness. In terms of advertisement, the principles of
effective communication must be taken into consideration. For me, a better way to present the
ad created by Reebok is to implement a better message that is clear, brief, accurate, and organize
while concerning all the possible ethics of different receivers.
