Meet musics of Joe Hisaishi, the famous composer being known for writing the
music for Studio Ghibli’s animation and several Japanese films, and John Williams,
the famous composer being for several award-winning film scores and music for
Olympic. Joe Hisaishi & John Williams are both greatest film composers of the
modern age. They are the musical mastermind behind the scores of numerous
films. This concert celebrates their long and fruitful collaboration with the master of
film director. They are known for colorful and vibrant orchestral sound palettes from
a delicate touch of bittersweet strings melody to the grandiose brass blast of triumph.
However, Joe Hisaishi leans toward the oriental sound while John Williams

one’s ears.

- rationale/philosophy behind the programming

Film is a very important media nowadays. It is convincing to say that almost
every people of our ages have usually consumed films as a part of everyday life.
There are many elements that contribute to the success of each film, and film score is
the very important one, given that sound, besides moving pictures, can arouse certain
emotion and make people feel more into the story. Moreover, some films even
become memorable by its soundtrack. For these reasons, I would like to bring more
attention to the film scores.
In this concert, I would like to present pieces which are familiar to every group
of people nowadays. Among film composers, Joe Hisaishi and John Williams are two
of the most famous. For Joe Hisaishi, he became well-known for his compositions for
almost every works of Studio Ghibli and also other Japanese films like “Departure”.
For John William, his notably film scores for epic movie series “Star Wars” are one
thing that people would remind when thinking of the films. Besides the reputation,
the pieces themselves are musically important regarding to the cultural influences.
Joe Hisaishi’s works are representative for oriental sound, while John Williams’
works can be regarded as the result of transforming various Western music. These
two “Big J” demonstrate the contrast, but precious, influential sounds of our age.
