Lesson 1: Understanding History

History defined

History is the study of the past as it is described in written documents. It provides us significant records
of the past, a meaningful story of mankind depicting the details of what happened to man and why it happened.

Relevance of History

The light of the past teaches us to understand our very own culture our society and our identity. In
addition, studying history provides moral understanding of historical events which is essential for acquiring
good citizenship.

ACTIVITY NO. 1
Direction: Define history based on your own understanding on the space provided.

History is something that we acquire knowledge from. If we are to compare our

situation then and now, I think our world have been a lot better now. There are so
many things people have learned and applied. People have learned a more peaceful
ways to deal with things and that wars are not the only way. We learned to
acknowledge different race, cultures, colors, beliefs, etc. We have seen a lot of
changes and the most credible proof that we have now is our history.
ACTIVITY NO. 2
ESSAY. Discuss the vital role/s of history in the following area

Culture
History and culture are two subjects intertwined in the establishment of individual identity. The
traditions, values, and beliefs held by previous generations hold an indelible impact on how we
view our place in the world.

Understanding culture is helpful in the study of history because many historical events arise
within specific cultural contexts, and knowing these cultural contexts can greatly help us to better
understand and appreciate the significance of these events.

Society
The reasons are many, but none are more important to a democratic society than this:
knowledge of history is the precondition of political intelligence. Without history, a society shares
no common memory of where it has been, what its core values are, or what decisions of the past
account for present circumstances. Without history, we cannot undertake any sensible inquiry
into the political, social, or moral issues in society. And without historical knowledge and inquiry,
we cannot achieve the informed, discriminating citizenship essential to effective participation in
the democratic processes of governance and the fulfillment for all our citizens of the nation’s
democratic ideals.

National identity
Nations are made up of a collection of stories and legends. These stories shape the way we think
about our country and our standing within it. History is where we learn about how great
institutions are formed, and how they’ve contributed to where we are today. For many of us,
looking back at incredible fellow countrymen is a way of establishing our own identity. Finding
who we are and what mark we can make on the world is a huge part of childhood. Allowing
children to learn about the identity of their country is one way of facilitating that.
